BE YOURBEST

Best wishes

Sara DaveyAcademy Principal

This week the Academy was visited by a team of external reviewers from Challenge Partners, a group that we invite in every October to carry out what is in effect a mini-OFSTED inspection. Our visitors were a group of five reviewers made up of an OFSTED inspector, a Headteacher and three Deputy Headteachers from schools based all over the country as far afield as Brighton, London and Herefordshire.

I am absolutely delighted to report that after three vigorous days of observing over 30 lessons delivered by almost all of our teachers and across every subject, and reviewing our examination results, Academy Development Plan and MixX programme, our visitors have graded Mounts Bay as ‘Outstanding’ in all areas.

The MixX programme, along with the opportunities provided by our International links, was held up as an ‘Area of Excellence’ and an example for other schools who may wish to seek support in this area.

Most pleasing of all was the complimentary things said by our visitors about our students. The Lead Inspector remarked that students at Mounts Bay were ‘very proud of their school and excited to show off the work they were doing in their lessons’.

I would therefore like to take this opportunity to thank all of the students for their enthusiasm and hard work in continuing to make Mounts Bay Academy an Outstanding ‘place to be’.

Also this week we have continued to develop our on-line learning platform, ‘Firefly’. Students are able to access their learning both in and out of lessons using this system, and we will be in touch shortly about how parents will also be able to use it, both via the internet and on their smartphones, to support their child’s learning and monitor their homework.

Principal’s Report

Finally, it has been a very successful week for our sports teams who have had a clean sweep in fixtures across different sports against a number of schools. Pride of place goes to our Year 11 rugby team whose defeat of Redruth puts them into the quarter finals of the County Cup. If only our national team had achieved the same in the competition they had been playing in!

On Friday 2nd October Mounts Bay students who learn French in Years 7, 8 and 9 smiled, giggled and had fun watching the playful French performance of the 'Le Tour De France' by Flying Theatre. All the characters in the performance were played by two very talented French performers who showed off their amazing acting skills and magic tricks that wowed the audience.

French Theatre

Report by Emily Rees 8 Red

The whole play was spoken in French so all students had to use their French knowledge to work out what they were saying. It was hard at times, however, they tried to act out what they were saying which made it quite helpful. I would recommend this play to other schools so they could laugh as much as we did. Children from ages 6-13 would enjoy this French performance and I think it was a fun experience that all of us and the teachers seemed to enjoy.

BECURIOUS

On Friday 2nd October students from Richard Lander School joined our students to take part in a Japanese Super Language Day. Students had three sessions; Japanese language, Manga Art and Taiko Drumming.

The day was full of excitement as many of the students had previously learnt some Japanese on their own or had a particular interest in the Japanese art scene.

Year 9 students working on their Arts Award worked with Mr Abdullayev and Ms Claxton to lead the Manga session and our leaders did a great job!

We hope to hold a follow-up Japanese event in the new year. Anyone interested should let their language teacher or Ms Bennett know.

Ten Year 9 GCSE Catering students took the opportunity to partake in an exciting industry led Catering/Hospitality focused 'have a go day' at Cornwall College Catering Department, where they were able to draw on the extensive expertise of the staff there, and its resources.

Catering at Cornwall College

Report by Mr Bromfield

They honed both their chef and Front of House skills, developing important employability skills, whilst applying some of the key areas of the GCSE Catering curriculum.

Students perfected their barista skills, developed ‘mocktails’, and worked out the costing and the profitability of hospitality commodities.

BECREATIVE

This year’s Silver Arts Award is now well and truly up and running. Thirty of our Year 9 students are involved in the programme this year, and the Leadership Projects have been especially exciting so far. Two projects deserve a special mention, Karaoke Club and Japanese Day Manga workshop.

Karaoke runs every Monday lunchtime in the Cube. This year, Emma Eddy, Madeline Thomas, Amber Symons and Ebony Maddock have taken on the planning and running of the Club. We have had three weeks so far and the Cube has been full of students watching while eating their lunch, and every performance slot has been filled. There has been a brilliant atmosphere, and a high standard of singing. Ebony and Madeline also volunteered to run the Club for our Year 6 Open Day, which was a great success.

On Friday last week, Mounts Bay hosted a Japanese Day, organised by Emma Bennett. As part of their Silver Arts Award, Cathy Tou, Amy Curnow, Lily Wadham-Duke, Azura McSally and Jenny McKniff planned, prepared and ran three workshops in Manga Art, working with 30 students in each session. It was a great experience, with our students getting some amazing feedback from their session.

Through the year we will be running lots of Leadership Projects through the Arts Award, both in Mounts Bay Academy, local primary schools and the local community.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Arts Award programme come and speak to Mr New, Ms Claxton or Mr Roberts in the Cube.

The Royal Navy and RAF visited Compass on Monday 5th October. CSgt Anthony Hands of the Royal Navy and Corporal Adam Hogan of the RAF, both from Redruth Careers Office, delivered an informal and enlightening presentation to interested students on the wide range of career opportunities in the Navy, the RAF and the Marines.

Students gained an understanding of the different levels of career opportunities from apprenticeships to officer level, of the relevance of their GCSEs in occupations such as engineering, ICT, catering, medicine and aircrew to name a few. Students also found out how they could gain funding for their degree courses and a bursary whilst at college. The Armed Forces also offer work experience placements at Culdrose for students who want to gain an insight into this profession although places are very limited.

Adventure Cycle

Eleven students from 9 Yellow cycled a section of the Bissoe Trail to end their Adventure Learning Week. They stopped for lunch at Prima Bakeries and met a few other cyclists, dog walkers and horse riders along the route. The ride was hugely enjoyable in the late summer sun and additionally they learnt that on a long ride, it is best to choose your bike solely on the comfort of your saddle! Year 10 RugbyThe Year 10 Rugby team took part in a second round fixture at Truro School. The team were short of numbers and thankful to a handful of Year 9 students who volunteered their services.

Truro are a very strong team and were clear winners in the fixture. However, MBA put huge effort into the game with some notably good performances from Morgan Harvey, Mawgan Osborne and Caleb Harrison. They all put in a great team performance.

Maia Fashokun achieved a silver medal at the National Cadet Ranking Tournament at Stratford at the weekend.

The competition, which took place in Stratford-upon-Avon, was a national cadet ranking tournament so any points gained go towards the U17 rankings. Maia is currently ranked 3rd nationally.

The first round was a poule round and Maia won all six of her fights. She then progressed through the next four rounds winning, 15-1, 15-7, 15-8 and 15-5. In the semi final she beat the GB number 4, Lizzie Moffat, 15-8. In the final she lost 15-13 to Sophia Potter ranked number 2.

It was a very long day and Maia fenced brilliantly whilst nursing a knee injury. She is looking forward to representing GB in the Meylan International in France on 17th - 18th October.

County Rugby Just thought I would try and raise your spirits in the world of rugby after England’s performance.

Three Year 10 girls have made the U16 County Girls Rugby Squad. They had their trials on Sunday. I know some of the other girls that qualified too from the Truro and Newquay schools and the standard is very high.

The girls selected for this season are; Zoe Forster, Zelah Yuill and Kiera Goddard. Well done all. Report by Mrs Crowle

Netball Victories

The Year 7 Netball team had their first fixture this week against Hayle School and were rewarded with a win. They played very well and were a pleasure to take. The final score was 13 – 11.

The Year 8 team was also in action in their first fixture of the year and they won as well finishing on a fabulous final score of 24 – 5.

A huge well done to all.

The Year 7 and 8s have just had their first matches of the year and completed a clean sweep against Hayle, with the Year 7s winning 25-20 and the Year 8s winning 51-7. It was a great result for the Year 8 team against Hayle School.  They got the win after keeping the majority of the possession and steadily putting points on  throughout the game.  There were tries from Ben Jefferies, Henry Jackson and Levi Barker with the overall score of 51 – 7.  It was an excellent way to kick start this season’s games with a well deserved win.

Rugby Cup Victory

Report by Luke Flack

On Thursday MBA played in a County Cup game away to Redruth School. MBA put in a very strong performance and won the tie 46 - 5. It was a hard physical game for both sides. Our forwards provided good ball to our strong, fast back line and all in all a good team effort resulted in the impressive final score. Shea Cornish gave a confident display with his conversions.

On Monday 28th September Embla Hocking, a former MBA student, visited the Academy to talk about Exeter Mathematics School. She gave us information on what Exeter Mathematics School provides and where Maths can lead to in terms of careers. She told us, "Maths is a lot more important than most people think and you can achieve so much through it".

We then had the opportunity to see her final video project that she did when she was in her last year at MBA : The Seven Bridges of Konigsberg. We are now participating in a project called Standing on the Shoulders of Giants, studying famous mathematicians and scientists and how they have affected us today. Embla was very inspiring and it was a great experience, I cannot wait to continue the project.

The main focus of the talk was to help us understand what is good about Maths and that it isn't just a boring lesson that you need to do. I would like to say a big thank you to Embla and everyone who's helped set this amazing opportunity up for us.

Class representatives were elected this week. In 7 Yellow there were lots of candidates for the three roles: Media, Form and Competition captain. Each candidate was given two minutes to present why they would be good at each role and then answer (some very tough) questions. The voting was very close and the final results were: Logan Aspden - Form Captain, Eddie Roynon - Competition Captain and Ross Gilmour - Media Captain.

Mr Strong said, "I was really impressed with the standard of the presentations and how well the students coped with some very difficult questions". Logan's successful presentation included a poem about how he would be a great Tutor Captain.

Well done to Sian and Abigail Birch who held a cake sale at first and second break today. They ran out of cakes at first break so mum and dad came to the rescue with another batch in under 75 minutes!

They raised a total of £62.50 for the Dwarf Sports Association. This will be put together with any monies raised at the Fun Day in Madron this Sunday from 11am - 3pm, where everyone is welcome.
