1 Principal's Message Kia ora e te Whānau For those who managed to hear Kathryn Berkett speak at the free parent evening in Week 1, we were treated to some excellent new ideas. Here are some notes I took that may be of interest to you: In Utero Brain cells are damaged, or more likely to be, from early drugs and alcohol use, or stress. Cortisol is the stress hormone that when produced at high levels, over sustained periods of time, does damage. Sometimes brain cells are not even formed. These parts of the brain are not always accessed until later in life. In the first 2-3 years of a child’s development, 1000 trillion connections are made in the brain. The Brain Brainstem - survival (heart, lungs and core functions) - developed pre-birth Limbic - emotions - starting to develop by around 2-3 years Cortex - the managing part of the brain - starting to develop by around 4-5 years and is not completed until 17 - 23 years. Parenting and Teaching together “What if our children have not heard the ‘language of respect’ or taking turns?” How do we learn this? We learn by doing and practising. We need to practise skills to improve socially, emotionally, cognitively and physically. We only learn PERSEVERANCE if we successfully fail (the Pit of Learning). We need to learn each child’s ‘safe zone’ so that we can push them without causing stress. If we want to change behaviour we need to plan and practise over time. We must accentuate the positive and give explicit feedback! It just shows that your job as a parent and ours as teachers are not such simple tasks! Nā mihi nui Mike Molloy Principal Cross Country Thank you to Mr L for his organization of the Cross Country yesterday, everything went smoothly and the weather held out for just long enough! Thanks to all of the staff and parents who volunteered as marshalls for this event. A huge thank you to Hellers for supplying the sausages, bread, onions and sauce for our Cross Country sausage sizzle yesterday. Thanks also to Blair Earnshaw for his support and organization of the BBQ , and of course to all of our BBQ volunteers. Term 1 / Issue 8 / 18 May, 2017
