www.markfisher.org As summer comes to a close and we begin a new school year, I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself as your new school trustee for the Ottawa Carleton District School Board (OCDSB). There is simply no greater privilege than the opportunity to serve our community and I am looking forward to working hard for you over the coming months. Mark Fisher School Opening Longfields-Davidson Heights It’s an exciting time for the Barrhaven community as we celebrate the opening of the Longfields-Davidson Secondary (LDHS) School on August 28. The school, which will open its doors to students on September 1, will open initially for grade 7-9 students, with grades 10 to 12 coming over the next three years. This state-of-the-art school is the result of a lot of hard work by our community, especially former Zone 3 Trustee, Alex Getty, who passed away suddenly this past Spring. In honour of Trustee Getty’s years of service to his community and the Ottawa Carleton District School Board, I am pleased that the Auditorium at LDHS will be named after him. Transportation On-line Survey The Ottawa Student Transportation Authority (OSTA) recently announced that it will be hosting a special on-line survey for Barrhaven families in order to seek additional feedback on their proposal to change school start times in our Barrhaven/Knoxdale- Merivale schools and across the city. The proposal would see start times change in the Barrhaven area from as much as 5 minutes to 45 minutes. (no earlier than 8:00 am and no later than 9:15 am). I am grateful that the OSTA, in partnership with a number of area school council groups, has come up with this survey and it shows that they understand how important this proposal is to our community. Parents are scheduling their mornings by the second in terms of getting kids off to school and then getting to work on-time, so we need to make sure we get this policy right. The survey can be accessed at www.ottawaschoolbus.ca and it will be posted until September 30, 2009. Health and Safety Pandemic Preparedness and Response Plan The OCDSB released a Pandemic Preparedness Plan on August 21, which will be used to proactively respond to an infectious disease outbreak, such as the H1N1 influenza virus (commonly referred to as swine flu). You can read the Plan at www.ocdsb.ca . In addition, on August 19, the City of Ottawa’s Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Isra Levy, wrote to parents and guardians of students concerning H1N1 to advise that Ottawa Public Health continues to work closely with schools and school boards in the city to monitor and manage the presence of the virus in the community over the coming school year. More information on the H1N1 virus and ways you can protect yourself and your family can be found at www.phac-aspc.gc.ca . Keep checking the Board’s website for updates.
