of you that celebrated Diwali this week have enjoyed a festive time with family and friends. To help celebrate Diwali at school, the children

enjoyed a special Diwali themed menu on Wednesday thanks to Ms Beno and we also had author Kiran Lyall visit the Year 1 pupils to read her book and talk to the children about the significance of the religious festival.

I just wanted to share with you the picture below. On Monday after our BRIDGES assembly and the introduction of the disposition of ‘Resourcefulness’ for this week, some of the children took the opportunity at lunchtime to create a beautiful autumn tree using the leaves, f lowers and other objects they could find in the playground. They were very excited by their work and insisted I had a look; they proudly explained that they had been ‘resourceful’. It was a great independent learning moment which clearly demonstrated that the message of the BRIDGES dispositions is really beginning to mean something to our pupils.

Phonics Workshop for ParentsThank you to those parents and carers who were able to attend our phonics workshop on Tuesday evening. It was an impressive turn out and great to see so many of you participating and asking great questions about your child’s learning. We fully appreciate your support. I would like to thank Ms Ali and Ms Uddin for their hard work and preparation for the evening. I know that many of you now feel better equipped and informed about how to support your child at home.

For those of you that were unable to attend or for those of you that would like to read through the power point presentation again, it is now available to view from the ‘Community’ tab on the website and then in ‘Resources for Parents’.

On Wednesday, the Year 1 pupils were treated to fantastic drama workshop led by Wendy Richardson from Springboard Arts. The

drama helped to put the historical context into perspective and help tell the story of how the Great Fire of London started and spread. The

children had a great time taking on various character roles.

Author Kiran Lyall visited the Year 1 pupils this week to read her book, Ria and Raj, and talk to the children about Diwali. The children were asked to enter a colouring competition and two winners were chosen. Well done to Klaudia Piechlova and Zahra Abbas who both won a signed copy of Kiran’s book.

As you know, I like to share pictures of the pupils and their learning, but I couldn’t resist sharing a recent picture of our Year 1 staff preparing for their science lessons. You can see they were

having so much fun!

We need more Work Experience placements!

Do you work in a career that would interest our students? If so please contact us: info@

isaacnewtonacademy.orgYear 10 students will complete a work experience placement from Monday 20th June 2016 – Friday 24th June 2016 and we need your help! If you feel you can offer a placement please read the placement guide below and contact Mr Crowther-Green by email: info@isaacnewtonacademy.org with the title Work Experience. Please provide a work address, brief details of the type of work, potential duties and include a contact name, telephone number and email. Placement guide• Employers must have a Health and Safety policy and Public

Liability Insurance• Placements should be easily reachable from INA by public

transport• Students should not be working in a confined space with a single

employer (safeguarding reasons)• Employers offering placements will need to complete an

agreement and send details of dress, days, times, tasks and any specific information

• Students will complete a project which they will work through during their placement

We welcome friends and family of INA students to offer placements to INA students. We want students to broaden their horizons and we want students to be completing a work experience that they could not easily organise themselves. ReceptionThe Reception children had fun this week wrapping up and walking along the High Road to find out about the local community as part of their Out and About topic.

We are hoping to invite some friends and family members in to talk to the children about their roles within the community, with particular focus on dentists, doctors, nurses, police officers etc. If you are able to help, please let your child’s teacher know or pop in with any details to the main Primary reception office.

Uniform InformationThe Primary uniform policy is on the website under the primary tab and ‘policies’.

Year 10 Reading BuddiesYear 10 pupils have volunteered to read with some of our most confident Year 1 readers. Now that the Year 1 children are able to decode text fluently, the Year 10 pupils are helping them with their comprehension skills and will visit the Primary every week, one day before school to support them. Ms Atkinson has been busy training the Year 10 pupils with their mentoring skills.

Composer of the FortnightWe are currently listening to and learning about Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart as our Composer of the Fortnight. As a suggested activity to support at home, you could gather some facts about Mozart in preparation for the coming weeks. The class with the highest attendance at the end of every week is awarded the attendance trophy during Friday’s Award & Recognition assembly.

"We build too many walls and not enough bridges.” Isaac Newton BRIDGES are habits of mind or learning characteristics that develop a pupil's character and learning power and enable him/her to grow into a well-rounded individual and resilient learner.

There are seven BRIDGES habits that we will be working on, which will rotate on a weekly cycle throughout the year. The BRIDGES habit of the week will always be introduced at the beginning of the week during the Monday assembly and reinforced throughout the week across the curriculum. Each class teacher will award a certificate to a pupil that they feel has demonstrated the BRIDGES focus for the week.

Each week we will update you on the BRIDGES habit that will be introduced in the coming week and offer some top tips on how to reinforce the habit at home too. Please also refer to the Primary BRIDGES wheel above

Week commencing 16th November– Integrity

At School:

• Atschoolweencouragethepupilstomakesuretheyplayinakindandthoughtfulwayand include others in their games. Games where ‘turn-taking’ is needed are great at helping the children to understand that everyone has a fair turn. • Itisalsoimportantthatthechildrenlearnhowtowinandloseagamegraciouslyandshow humility when they win or congratulate the winner and say well done if they lose. • Thechildrenneedtounderstandtheimportanceoftellingthetruthevenwhenitfeels uncomfortable to have to admit that we have done something wrong. They also need to learn to take responsibility for their actions and not get into a habit of blaming others. It is important that the children have a moral sense of right and wrong.• Eachhalftermeveryclasschoosetwoambassadorstohelpthepupilsdeveloptheir citizenship skills by helping with jobs in their class or at lunchtimes.• Weencourageeverychildtohelpkeeptheschoolenvironmentcleanbyclearingawayplates or cups after lunch or tidying up their own table place after activities in class.

At Home:

Talk to your child about how they can be a good citizen within their community, not dropping litter etc. Talk about what is fair and encourage your child to help out at home with tidying their room or books away so that they develop a sense of responsibility and respect towards their property. Reinforce the message about always telling the truth and why this is important. When you are reading stories together with your child, discuss characters, their behaviour and moral decisions and whether they are good or bad characters and why. What should the character have done instead? etc.

Wisepay DetailsWisepay details have been given to everyone now, which will allow you to book a place for ‘Breakfast Club’ or ‘After School Club’. Payments must be made in advance. If you experience any problems, please contact Ms Rayner or Ms Chaggar who will be happy to help.

Breakfast is available each day from 7.45am and costs just £2 per day. The children enjoyarangeofcereals,toastanddifferenttopping,juiceormilkandfruit.Anychildattendingmustbebroughttothemainreceptionareaby8.20amatthelatest.

AfterSchoolClubrunsfrom3.45pm–6.00pm(3.00pm–6.00pmonTuesdays)andcosts just £5 per hour. The children enjoy a range of snacks each evening and a variety of games and activities.
