Thanks to SBNTV for broadcasting the video of the Commissioners debate in its

entirety. Please make time to watch it and share it with your neighbors. It's a great

opportunity for you to hear the candidates speaking in their own words.

Watch VIDEO OF THE DEBATE IN ITS ENTIRETY courtesy of SBN-TV:

All candidates running for Districts 1, 2, 3 and Chairman were invited to attend. Therewere three candidate panels each lasting thirty minutes and there was a four-person

panel of questioners. Each panel was asked the same set of questions.

The first panel included District 1 Commissioner candidate, James Mays (D), and also

candidates from District 2, Jacqueline Anderson-Woods (D) and Brian Preston (R).

Preston was the only incumbent Commissioner brave enough to attend the forum and

defended his three month record of voting against the budget increase. He also gave a

reasonable explanation of the proposals he recommended that would have helped to

close the current $10 million budget deficit gap.

The second panel was all four of the District 3 candidates; Gary Barham, Bill Toney,

Laura Jeffares, and Ken Sherman. You'll have to watch the video and decide for

yourself who made the best impression in this round.

The final panel included two of the three candidates running for Chairman, TommySmith (R) and Carlotta Harrell (D). Current Chairman BJ Mathis did not respond to theinvitation nor did she attend. This doesn't surprise me as I have yet to be made aware ofany forum in which she is willing to attend without prior knowledge of the questionsbeing asked. Additionally, Mathis has refused to answer questions at the last three

meetings of the Henry County GOP after being invited to give her stump speech in thepresence of other candidates.

My goal is simple. I want to provideDistrict 2 with stable and continued

leadership. We deserve representationthat will make fiscally responsibledecisions and provide our public safety

officials with the resources needed toaccommodate our community. ~ Vinny

Vincent is a 22 year resident of Hampton. After graduating from Henry County HighSchool he went on to receive his Bachelor s degree from the University of Georgia in

    Political Science.

Vincent was drawn home by the desire to serve the community and he accepted aposition as a juvenile probation officer with the Henry County Juvenile Court. He

worked closely with local families to help council and rehabilitate our youth. Vincentalso served as a volunteer football coach at Union Grove High School to further mentorour children in learning to be competitive while maintaining sportsmanship. It was

through these community services that he was inspired to make a larger impact on localfamilies by obtaining a legal education. Vincent enrolled in Atlanta s John Marshall LawSchool and earned his Juris Doctorate degree. Vincent is proud that while in law schoolhe was able to provide free legal services to members of our active military. Afterobtaining his Bar license he once again returned to Henry County where he started hisown law practice.

Vincent wishes to give back to our community by protecting our core values andlifestyle. He stands strong on the issues of public safety and fiscal responsibility, believing we must invest in our citizens. Vincent is excited about the possibility of

serving our county and helping lead our community to brighter, more prosperous days. This can only be achieved however through diligent efforts and working....Together.

In his free time, Vincent enjoys spending quality time with friends and family. In the

fall, you can find him on the road to Athens to cheer on his Alma Mater and belovedBulldogs. Vincent is also an avid movie person and enjoys relaxing with loved ones and

watching the latest releases. He also enjoys volunteering in the community and workingwith our local youth.

Real impact requires cooperation from the entire community. The concept of

Together. stems from the idea that District 2 has been long overdue for a leader who

not only understands the issues we face but has also seen many of them first hand.Vincent is committed to not only serving his entire term, but working diligently in the

community to ensure that our needs are met. It s time District 2 had a servant-leaderwho commits to start this together, work together, and most importantly finishtogether. Vincent believes that with strong, stable leadership any goal can be achieved.Let s make District 2 Henry County's best...Together.

    We Can t Leave H i st o r y Beh i nd , Wh en i t Suppo r t s STEM

    Com m enta ry b y B ruce Kenda l l

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering and Math.

As I write approximately five thousand remaining survivors and followers; remnants of agroup more than half a million strong, are approaching our nation s capital. All with theintent to set up camp at the University of Maryland at College Park, attending the 32ndannual Kenneth E. Behring NA T IONA L H I STORY D AY CONTEST, (NHD) June 10 - 14.

The complement consists of students sixth through twelfth grade, teachers, parents and

other family members, State, Regional, and Local Coordinators, College Professors andsundry interested parties. While not the first year Georgia s delegation included studentsand teachers from Henry County, it is however, the first year that student and teacher, arebrother and sister.

It is the dead of the night, as Number-One-Son and Oldest-Daughter begin their journeynorth; and as dawn slowly adjusts the windows transparency to a new day, it finds onestanding a lonely post, awaiting the call signaling a safe arrival. The hours have passed notin worry but in contemplation. As Number-One-Son faces new challenges, I am comforted inthat he is standing on the shoulders of some very special Teachers, Librarians, and TeacherAides, who are responsible for this moment:

Mrs. Allen, Mr. Baker, Mrs. Bulin, Mr. Bullington, Mrs. Cannon, Mrs. Coleman, Mrs. Dodgen,Mrs. Dunn, Dr. Forrester, Mrs. Ganon, Mrs. Garner, Mrs. Gilliam, Mrs. Goodwin, Mrs. Hadley,Mr. Jones, Mrs. Kay, Ms. Kendall, Mrs. Patel, Mr. Peterson, Mrs. Rosolino, Mrs. Smith, Mrs.Spurluck, Mrs. Tamburello, Mr. Young, and Mrs. Watts.

So h ow does NHD and Soc ia l Sc ience mak e a d i f fe rence?

In May of 2011 RESEARCH was released showing that students participating in the NHD competition:

o Outperform their non-NHD peers on state standardized tests in social studies, reading, science and math.

o Are better writers, writing with purpose and real voice, and marshal solid evidence to support their point o

    view.

o Are critical thinkers who can digest, analyze and synthesize information.

o Learn 21st century skills about collaborating with team members, talking to experts, time management, a

    persevere.

o And NHD has a positive impact among students whose interests in academic subjects may wane in high

    school.

    ~10~

Norm Augustine, CEO of Lockheed Martin, wrote an op-ed for the Wall Street Journal CLI CK HEREin September2011, where he asked this question: In which of the following subjects is the performance of American 12th-graders the worst? a) science, b) economics, c) history, or d) math?

The answer is History, and he believes that lack of knowledge, puts American employers and America'sfreedoms in a worrisome spot; he wrote:

After all, if a leader can make the numbers, does it really matter if he or she can recite the birthdates of all tpresidents?

Well, it's not primarily the memorized facts that have current and former CEOs like me concerned. It's the oththings that subjects like history impart: critical thinking, research skills, and the ability to communicate clearlyand cogently. Such skills are certainly important for those at the top, but in today's economy they arefundamental to performance at nearly every level. A failing grade in history suggests that students are not onfailing to comprehend our nation's story and that of our world, but also failing to develop skills that are cruciato employment across sectors. Having traveled in 109 countries in this global economy, I have developed aconsiderable appreciation for the importance of knowing a country's history and politics.

Norm summarized the importance of how learning history and participating in NHD both contribute to a qualitbasic education and SUPPORT STEM:

Far more than simply conveying the story of a country or civilization, an education in history can create criticthinkers who can digest, analyze and synthesize information and articulate their findings. These are skills

needed across a broad range of subjects and disciplines.

In fact, students who are exposed to more modern methods of history education where critical thinking andresearch are emphasized tend to perform better in math and science. As a case in point, students whoparticipate in National History Day actually a year-long program that gets students in grades 6-12 doinghistorical research CONSI STENTLY OUTPERFORM THEI R PEERS ON STATE STANDARDI ZED TESTS, NOT ONLY I N SOCI AL STUDI ES BUTSCI ENCE AND M ATH AS WELL.

In my position as CEO of a firm employing over 80,000 engineers, I can testify that most were excellentengineers but the factor that most distinguished those who advanced in the organization was the ability tothink broadly and read and write clearly.

PAUL STOLLER s May 21, 2012 Huffington Post article SAVING SOCIAL SCIENCEsummed up his thoughts on theimportance of the Social Sciences:

It goes without saying that STEM is important in the future of higher education, but so are the social scienceand humanities which teach students how to think critically and to how assess the social and culturalramifications of rapid technological change. It is shortsighted to advocate scientific and technological literacy the expense of social and cultural literacy. It is foolish to train an army of narrow-minded technocrats who areinsensitive to the complex nuances of social and cultural life. It is irresponsible to side step social scienceresearch in the formulation of productive social policies that are designed to improve our ever-increasinglycomplex social lives.

In short, we need strategic plans that support rather than undermine the social sciences and humanities.Having poorly balanced universities that are focused squarely on STEM will have, I'm afraid, a drastic impact

the quality of American social and cultural life.

For the last twelve years Presidents, politicians, and mainstream media spent have spent that time talkingabout American Students lack of Math skills and the need for STEM education. For Georgia the solutions havebeen; No Child Left Behind, Georgia Performance Standards, and now Racing to the Top, with Common Core, and Workforce and College Readiness. All with a primary focus on Math.

Education needs balance, as does every other aspect of our lives. Yes, I understand that you can live happily years on a diet of beer, bread, and peanut butter, but feeding our children an education diet that focuses onbeer, bread, and peanut butter (Math, English, and Reading) is not healthy for them or our future.
