construct situations where kids haveto get on with each other. For somekids “Go outside and play” is a good
place to start!!
2. Play with your kids: Interact withyour kids through games and other
means so you can help kids learndirectly from you how to get on with
others.
3. Talk about these skills: If younotice your kids need to developsome of these skills then talk aboutthem, point out when they show themand give them some implementation
ideas.
Kids are quite ego-centric and need todevelop a sense of ‘other’ so they can
successfullynegotiate themany socialsituations thatthey find
themselves in.
….. and finally, have a wonderful daytomorrow Preps, celebrating 100 days
of school.

Camp
Today students in grades one andtwo went off to Adanac Camp inYarra Junction. For our youngerstudents this is often the first timethat they have been away from homefor the night. This can sometimes
be a daunting prospect, but rest
assured, the teachers andaccompanying staff take every possible step to ensure that the ‘campexperience’ is one that all studentswill enjoy. There is a comprehensivelist of daytime activities planned, aswell as a movie night for Thursdaynight. Staff will keep families up todate on TiqBiz . We will be lookingforward to hearing about the manyadventures when the students return
to school on Monday.
Twelve Friendship Skills Every Child Needs
This week’s newsletter continueswith our focus on Childhood
Friendships. Further information by

Kids can be picky about who they play and mix with. Popularityshould not be confused withsociability. A number of studies inrecent decades have shown thatappearance, personality type andability impact on a child’s popularity at school. Easy-going,talented kids usually win peer popularity polls but that doesn’tnecessarily guarantee they will have
friends.
Those children and young peoplewho develop strong friendships havea definite set of skills that help makethem easy to like, easy to relate to
and easy to play with.
Here are twelve essential skills thatchildren have identified as beingimportant for making and keeping
friends:
1. Ability to share possessions and
space
2. Keeping confidences and secrets
3. Offering to help
4. Accepting other’s mistakes
5. Being positive and enthusiastic
6. Starting a conversation
7. Winning and losing well
8. Listening to others 9. Starting and maintaining a
conversation
10. Ignoring someone who is
annoying you
11. Cooperating with others
12. Giving and receiving
compliments
Friendship skills are generallydevelopmental. That is, kids grow
into these skills given exposure todifferent situations and with adult
help.
Here are some ideas if you thinkyour child experiencesdevelopmental delay in any of theseessential skills or just needs some
help to acquire them:
1. Encourage or insist that kids
play and work with each other:
Allowing kids the freedom to bekids is part of the message here but
parents have to be clever and
