From The Principal

Praise for Minden

The Ipswich Office of Metropolitan Region has nominated our school for the Jack Pizzey School of the Year Award. This Award recognises a state school that has achieved exceptional outcomes for students by:

using data to monitor performance, inform practice and apply learnings to drive improvement

developing and implemented an explicit improvement agenda documented in the school plan and aligned to the requirements of the School performance assessment framework

sharing successful practice across classrooms to ensure better outcomes for students

working collaboratively with other schools to improve performance

This is a significant acknowledgement for our school community and one we should be proud of regardless of whether we are among the winners or not.

Prep Open Day

Families wanting to know about Prep at Minden can come along to our Open Day on Wednesday 9 September 2015. Prep children will get to experience a range of typical activities in the classroom while parents will be provided with a brief overview of what our school offers.

Enrolments 2016

We already have a significant number of enrolment enquiries for 2016. If you, or someone you know, is interested in enrolling children for 2016, we encourage you to pick up an enrolment pack sooner rather than later.

BVSSSA Results

Congratulations to all our students who participated in the Athletics Carnival at Mt

Tarampa last week. Well Done Emma and Ameen who were awarded Age Champions. Minden retained the Overall Points Shield for the sixth year in a row.

Lockyer Athletics

A team of 25 Minden students will head to Laidley District State School on Friday 7 August to represent BVSSSA at the Lockyer Athletics Carnival. We have very little information regarding the event at this stage and will forward details when they are known. From previous years, participating students will need to arrive by 8:45am.

Security

There was an attempted break-in at the school last Monday morning. Fortunately, nothing was stolen and minimal damage was incurred. We encourage all community members to keep an eye on our school and report suspicious activity to Police or Crime Stoppers.

NAPLAN

Preliminary results should be delivered to schools by the end of the week. This is much earlier than in previous years and will allow schools to analyse student performance data and establish appropriate actions for the remainder of the year. Individual student reports will be released when we are advised by Education Queensland.

Science Fair

This annual event is getting bigger and better every year. On Thursday 20 August, our school, along with other local schools will enjoy a fun-filled, educational day at Minden with displays, demonstrations and interactive shows. There is something for all year levels with the senior classes continuing into the early night with an exploration of the world of astronomy.

Show Holiday

Monday 10 August is our school’s official Show Holiday. Parents are reminded that there is no longer a Pupil Free Day on the Wednesday.

E-Newsletter

As previously advised, the newsletter is now distributed exclusively via email. A small number of paper copies are available from the office upon request. Australian Newsletters has changed the format for the newsletter and

we are working hard to adopt the changes. We appreciate parents being patient as we become accustomed to the new processes.

From Michael Grose Presentations: Raising Successful Kids

All parents want to be successful and raise kids to be happy and contributing members of our community. Good intentions are not enough.

Often there is no difference between one parent and another in terms of skills, knowledge and understanding of kids. However, the biggest difference can be found in parents’ mindsets, rather than their parenting skills and understandings.

Here are 3 (of 10) mindsets for parenting success:

1. Believe in your child

This is easy if you have an early maturer, a child who has talents you value, or one who easily achieves anything he or she puts his mind too. But it’s a different story if you have a child who struggles at school or to make friends, or just has a different interest to you. Your belief in your child’s abilities is revealed through your expectations, your body language, even the expression on your face.

2. Look for the best

What you focus on expands so if all you see is misbehaviour, weakness and poor performance than you’ll get more of those things. Set your antennae for children’s strengths, abilities and social behaviours and you’ll invariably get more of those.

3. Think long term

If you want your child to become independent then don’t do everything for him or her; you need to teach them some skills so they can become self-sufficient. Awareness, teaching and opportunity are the main requirements for kids to pick up these skills. They need to be aware of what can be done. They need to acquire the skills - some take more teaching than others. They also need the opportunity to put things into practice.

Welcome back to term 3. We had a fantastic vacation care with many exciting activities. We had FAUNA come into the service with a wallaby and a kangaroo joey. They spoke to us about lots of animals and what to do if we come across some of these animals. We did Tye Dyeing and so much more. We had a visit from Ipswich PCYC indigenous workers. We played lots of games with the girls and had lots of laughs. We also went to Darling Downs zoo. This was an amazing day filled with lots of adventure. Some of the children had photos taken with a baby crocodile and baby monkeys. We also watched the lions be fed and had a picnic in the park. It was a fantastic day..

We are now busy planning for the September Holidays. If  you have any ideas for activities over vacation care, please don’t hesitate to contact us.

Last weekend we spent time at the Gatton show. Friday was freezing with the wind but we still managed to do lots of plaster painting with the children. It was a really busy event but very rewarding as well. The Dagwood Dogs were pretty good too.

This term we are updating children’s files. Please come and see the coordinator when you attend the centre.  This is a very important process .

The next two weeks we are starting on our sustainability plan. We will be working on our vegie garden and also recycling. Again if parents have any ideas with this or can help with our gardening club we would love your support. Each newsletter we ask for parents help and we realise how busy everyone is but we need parents, grandparents or anyone that can help assist with activities that may interest the children. This could be cooking, gardening, scrap booking etc.

We Would Like To Say A Huge Thankyou To Seth Smith and his Grand Ma and Mother for bringing in craft items and helping support PCYC. This has been very much appreciated.

We are now taking bookings again for after school care.

Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you require any further information.

The term has become busy already, but thankfully there is a lot of fun to be had. Lots of events coming up for our school, please read further information below about the 40hr famine & Drive-in Fundraiser.

40hr Famine - 14th - 16th August

The 40hr famine has been running for many years and is a great opportunity to raise money to help people in underdeveloped countries, source clean water, food and other vital supplies that we take for granted. I am encouraging students to become involved in a team effort to raise funds. Students do not need to give up food (under 12 years they are restricted to only 8hrs) they can take up the challenge of putting down their ipod or device, not using furniture or even stop talking for a whole weekend. If your child is interested in participating they can come and see me for an information sheet and permission form. Lets make a difference in the world.

'Chappy Mind Challenge'

The 'Chappy Mind Challenge' is a fun competition each fortnight where the students are given the opportunity to answer a question and possibly win a prize. This term trivia & factual questions will be asked. Students can come to the library at break times to write down their answer and place it in the 'Chappy' mailbox.

Here is the first question; Is a shark a fish or a mammal?

This fortnights question is; True or false? Crocodiles have no sweat glands so they use their mouths to release heat. Remember to come to the library at break times, on Thursday or Friday & have a go at answering the question.

Breakfast Club

Thank you to Mrs Shaw, Samantha, Nickkie, Mrs Davis, Judd, Beau & Digby for help with our first breakfast club. Next Thursday 6th August our Breakfast Club will be held again. Breakfast will be served from 8:15am until the bell goes to move into class. It is available for all students. Toast with various spreads and fruit will be served. If you would like to help, we will always welcome helpers. Breakfast Club will be held fortnightly, here are the dates for your calender; Thursday 20th August, Thursday 3rd September, Thursday 15th October, Thursday 29th October, Thursday 12th November, Thursday 26th November, Thursday 10th December. See you there!

I am available for a chat on Thursday and Friday for students and parents, if the need arises. Please call the office on 5425 7222 or send me an email on the address below.

Prep News

*Items needed: Please start collecting small boxes, lids, tubes (not toilet rolls), containers etc.

*Jumpers - Please make sure your child always has a jumper in their bag. The weather at the moment is very unpredictable. JUMPERS NEED TO BE NAMED….

*Presentation – Term 3’s presentation will be in week 9 (Tuesday 8th September 2pm).

*Munch/Crunch – Please make sure your child’s fruit or vegie snack is in a named container or plastic bag.

*Homework – All Prep students understand how to get a sentence in their head and then write the sentence. Parents do not need to write sentences for them. Let them have a go – listen to the sounds in the words and stretch words out! If you feel then that you might need to write a couple of the words to clarify what some of the words may be – then that’s okay.

*Back-to-Front Maths – Prep students are having fun in maths. Back-to-Front Maths allows students to explore new concepts, enabling them to discover for themselves underlying mathematical principles. It works by creating light bulb moments!

Teachers ask leading questions so that students develop mathematical principles for themselves. Questions asked step students through developmental sequence.

*Please ask if you are unsure about anything…

Thank you

Year 1

Welcome to Term 3 in YEAR ONE!

Wow – isn’t the year just flying by!  We are half way to Year 2…The next term is jam packed full of learning!

Last term we finished our healthy choices unit with a picnic in the park.  It is fair to say that all the kids thoroughly enjoyed themselves!

This term we have a new Kimochi in the classroom – Bella Rose.

“BELLA ROSE is very sweet and conscientious of others. She loves nature and is accepting of all the living wonders that the Kimochis® World can bring. Bella Rose’s sensitive side and ability to empathise always has a way of bringing emotional balance to the group.

Bella Rose’s favourite number is 8 and her favourite colour is green. Bella Rose lives on the sunny side of the street on Kimochis® Way. She loves the smell of Clover and the taste of morning dew. For Bella Rose, being sensitive can be a blessing, but it can also be a challenge. When Bella Rose’s feelings get hurt she has a hard time expressing herself.

Bella Rose can be known to close herself off when she feels bad. She might show her thorns to protect her feelings, but she would never use them to hurt others. Sometimes the Kimochis® can misunderstand her or read her the wrong way. Bella Rose needs to remind herself that it is okay to ask for water sometimes. After all, everyone needs a little water to grow.”

Bella Rose fits well with our Bounce Back program in class, teaching students about communication and resilience.

SIGHT WORDS – please continue practising the lists that were sent home.

READING – when reading with your child it is a good idea to ask them lots of questions about what they have read to see if they understand what they are reading.

LOST PROPERTY – we have a lovely big green basket full of unnamed clothing.  Please ensure you label your child’s clothing so that it doesn’t end up in our pile.

EQUIPMENT – there are some students who may need some new stationery this term – a letter or message will be sent home if this is the case.

We are looking forward to a fabulous third term!

Mrs Cornwall and the Year One class!

Year 5/6 Stories

Last Wednesday the Year Four/Five and Six students attended a Musical at Faith Lutheran College. The Back to the 80's Musical was a mind-blowing experience from the Faith College students.

The performance was about a girl who wanted to go out with the most popular boy in school but another quieter student was also interested. There was great singing and fantastic dancers. The retro look was really cool and the amazing colourful lights shone everywhere. It was a jaw-dropping spectacular show we hope that everyone enjoyed it as much as we did. Even the boys enjoyed it!
