BYOD Why BYOD??? (Bring Your Own Device) Today’s generation of students is unlike any other. These digital natives and their beloved mobile devices are attached at the hip. They keep their mobile devices on them at all times and expect connectivity. Therefore, as our society continues to become more and more gadget addicted, BYOD (bring your own device) becomes inevitable. The times are changing and education must change with it. Now the question is; why should we embrace this unavoidable digital shift with a well-planned BYOD policy? There are many benefits a successful BYOD solution can provide in our school's wireless network. The following are worth considering: Workforce ready students Collaboration is easier Learning beyond the classroom walls Personalised Instruction Gamification Education more interactive Student and Teacher swap roles We believe Google Apps for Education along with the chrome book as the 1-1 device will
provide our students with a transformative learning environment, that reflects our belief and
values expressed in our school Mission Statement.

During our Maths Block in Term 2 we
have been making Dodecahedrons and
Tetrahedrons.
While our top group did the Tetrahedrons
our lower groups attempted it using blue
tack and toothpicks.
We’d originally used
marshmallows and toothpicks.
Te Wa o Matariki.
During Matariki we made a wall. It has
facts about Matariki, pamphlets and term 2
goals.
Some of our Tk1 girls weaved some flax to
add to our wall.
This term we had 8 recipients for
Specialist Tech Prizegiving.
We’d like to give the following peo-
ple a big congratulations: Destiny
Walker, Kelaydn Winiata, Robert Fiao-
la, Danniirose Moka, Cruze
McCoullough,
Leila Meihana, Jesse Shakeshaft, and
Amohia Peka.
Good work!!!
Welcome Whaea Nicole!
We would like to welcome Whaea

Shady and Steven.

TE KANAWA 2 M SCIENCE
EXPERIENCES!!
Te Kanawa 2 has been lucky enough to be part of the M Science
programme with Russell Harrison this term. Most weeks we go out
for science experiences every Monday & Tuesday.
We learn a lot of things about water, nature and what’s around us in
the environment, with a science point of view. We’ve learned about
the history of our district, such as Hamurana Springs & Mt Ta-
rawera. We also learn about the major impacts in our
community. We have become more aware of what could happen in
the future if we make bad decisions that affect our environment.
Most of the science learning is connected to thinking and
understanding different things about water.
We have been on a lot of interesting and amazing experiences,
which means that we can go into the ‘deep detail’ and learn and
understand about theory and laws, what is happening and what are
important roles in the environment.
So far we have been to the Aquatic Centre where we learned about
lake safety skills. Secondly we went to Hamurana Springs, where
we learned how to drift dive (snorkelling) and the history of the
river. Thirdly back to Hamurana Springs, testing the water quality
and the microscopic organisms. Fourthly we went to Mount
Tarawera to experience the hot water beach and understand why we
have geothermal energy. We also learned more about the Mount Ta-
rawera eruption. Next we went to the Rotorua District Council to
learn about a variety of careers that relate to science. Lastly we went
to the Hatchery to learn about the trout and their life style and we
got to dissect a trout to see the internal parts. We are looking for-
ward to going to Taupo and Goat Island, it’s so
exciting doing all this science!!!

BACKGROUND ART…
WITH A DIGITAL TWIST…
We have created some art pieces using a combi-
nation of digital technology and pastel art.
Firstly we found background images that we
thought were appealing and then we incorpo-
rated our individual images digitally into these
backgrounds In some digital prints students
are easy to spot and others take a bit of look-
ing.
We then had to extend the background of our dig-
ital prints so that print and our art merged togeth-
er. In order to do this we had to experiment with
different colours, blends, textures and lines.
MATHS WEEK… Thank you Whaea Sheree for a cool maths
week.
T3 students got involved in the
daily maths solving challenges and the
QR Code Treasure Hunt.
WEATHERING THE STORM… While other schools were closing RIS made
the most of the weather swapping shoes for
bare feet, the playground for a pool and
creating boat races.
The arrival of porta loos saved the day.

Roller Mills & Tai Mitchell
On Friday 4th of July our class arrived at the Rotorua International Stadium to per-
form the welcoming powhiri for the 2014 Tai Mitchell Tournament.
Our class had a number of boys who were members of the Rotorua Maroon Team:
Ceiza James, Sean Field, Jordan Tuakana-Hudson & Caleb Piua, also the Rotorua
Gold Team:
Joshua Catherall.
Our class proudly performed the powhiri then waited around for kick off of the first
game. The Rotorua Maroon Team played Te Whanau Apanui first up and annihilated
them. The Maroon Team ended up placing third in the Tournament, playing Wha-
katane and beating them.
Congratulations to Caleb Piua, Jordan Tuakana-Hudson and Sean Field who were all
selected to attend the Roller Mills (BOP U13s Rep Team) trial. These boys went on to
make the team and are currently playing competition games on the weekend.

The Dark Horse On Thursday 21 August our class
went to Reading Cinema to watch
‘The Dark Horse’. Our boys really
enjoyed the movie and it had an
inspiring story line that has
motivated the boys to play more
chess.

Student Engagement
Currently our class are thoroughly
enjoying the new Student Engagement
system. We are working well as a
team and every single boy in our class
has a turn on the playing field. We
have been winning the majority of all
our games, even Fast 5 Netball. At the
moment we are playing Capture the
Ball, Kiwitag, Basketball, Unihoc and
Fast 5 Netball.
