Dear Parents and Caregivers The only thing about cold nights is that we often get nice sunny days but I can imagine standing on the side line last Saturday for your child’s sports would have been fairly cold and wet. The winter colds and sicknesses are on us early this year so it is important children have warm clothes for when they are outside even though they may be running around. One or two hardy souls have been spending the day in tee-shirts & shorts and bare feet and while this might be okay for cross country training it really is a bit light for the rest of the day I think. If your child is away for sickness or any other reason please do let the office know so we can check them off appropriately on the attendance register. As I have mentioned in previous newsletters our Block A (Rooms 1 – 3) building project is now a reality and at this stage our start date will be the beginning of the next school holidays. Students from these rooms will be moved on a temporary basis into other areas of the school for a period of approximately eighteen weeks. Classes will move to their new location before the end of term and will provide parents of students in this area with more detailed information closer to this time. The earlier timeframe will mean children are settled into their alternative space before the holidays and also it will allow us to do some salvage work on items we intend to keep, repurpose or sell. In addition to this project the Ministry of Education have also approved a fencing project for our school. This will mean the entire boundary will have new fences and gates and will allow improved security going forward for children learning and understanding where the extremities of our safe environment area. A project like this comes from the a different ”pot” of funding to our normal property or operational funding and thus has no impact on our budgets which is great because money is always pretty tight. Last week we had author Des Hunt at school who ran several sessions with our children. His unique way of looking at writing using science, especially chemistry had children spell bound. A group of our seniors are spending the day at the Young Leaders Conference in Rotorua today. This is an excellent opportunity for those selected to listen to and learn from a variety of role models as well as being shown how to develop and grow their own leadership skills as well. Have a great week. Yours in teaching Craig Haggo Principal

Year 7/8 Camp Fees - Important All Year 7/8 students wishing to attend this years ski

a non refundable deposit. Weekly payments towards camp fees can help spread the cost over the year. Payments can be made online to the
bank account listed at the bottom of this page or direct to the school office.
Enviro News Tip of the week:
ENVIRO LUNCH-Zero waste A reminder that Pongakawa School encourages children to have an Enviro lunch. That is no plastic wrappers..use little containers to place chippies/sandwiches/fruit/nuts etc inside or reuseable zip lock plastic bags. All scraps/
wrappers come home, they do not go into our school bins. Encourage your child to have a drink bottle with water in.
Discourage juice or sugary drinks.
