Mount Keira Scout Camp
Excellence Innovation Success
On Friday 16 March, Year 7 Geography
ventured to Mt Keira Summit and Scout camp
to study the geomorphic processes that have
shaped the Illawarra escarpment. There they
enjoyed learning about the reasons there are
different colours in the sandstone and how the
natural processes shape the beautiful rocks and
boulders throughout the National Park. They
also used a variety of geographers tools to
measure the temperature and moisture
content of the soil, the air temperature and
wind speed. The students drew a line drawing if
the escarpment, featuring the human impacts
of industrialisation and urbanisation and
evaluated our impact in this area.
This excursion reinforced the learning they
have been undertaking in the Landscapes and
Landforms unit this semester.

CAPA News Alice in Wonderland
Last Tuesday, Mr Cleary, a Drama and Acting expert, came along to rehearsal to assist our Alice in Wonderland cast and he was an excellent help to our young performers. Mr Cleary helped our students improve their character skills and taught them how to show emotions through speech and actions. He spent time with specific characters and helped them improve their acting, discussing aspects such as posture, voice and backstory. He also gave the young actors specific instructions and tips on how to play their character to the best of their ability. Here are some quotes from our drama students who thoroughly enjoyed the experience:
“I play the White Rabbit and Mr Cleary helped me understand how a rabbit moves and speaks, as the rabbit is quick, worried and jittery.”
* Luka Janssen, White Rabbit
“I play a card in the school play and Mr Cleary helped me improve showing the cards emotion and making gestures towards the other cards while arguing.”
* Darcy Britton, Card
“I play a flower in Alice in Wonderland and Mr Cleary helped me get a good character voice, and now I’m an angry flower.”
* Lily Walker, Flower
Rehearsals are going really well and two performances will be held on Thursday 21st June.
Written By Zarah King (Year 10) and Luka Janssen (Year 8).

their cabaret style show on tour each term, entertaining audiences with a range of songs from a variety of eras and styles.
All students are invited to attend the first concert – entry is $4 per student or $6 per family. The second concert is for our local
primary school students and residents from the Illawarra Retirement Trust village. All parents and community members are

Unplugged 24
Our first Unplugged concert for 2018 will be held on
Tuesday 10th April at 7pm in the Hall. These concerts have
been running since 2010 and were initially designed to raise
money to purchase a grand piano for the Hall. After
purchasing the piano in 2011, the concerts have continued
to be a strong tradition with many talented students of all
ages performing great live music along with circus, dance
and drama items, and art displays. All money raised is used
to maintain the piano and to purchase new performance
equipment for use in the Hall.

Community of Schools Primary and Junior Band Program 2018
The Woonona Community of Schools Band Program has been running successfully since
2012 and last year we had 34 students from Russell Vale, Woonona East and Woonona
Primary Schools participating. This year many of those students are now in high school
playing in the Junior Band. Both groups rehearse each Wednesday morning from 8:00-
9:30am. Primary students come to Woonona High School to learn an instrument and
rehearse as a band and our senior music students and outside tutors provide small
group tuition on flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, guitar, bass, keyboard
or drums. We will take applications for new primary band students later this term and
these students usually begin at the end of Term 2. The program is open to Year 5 or 6
students and information will be distributed to students through primary schools. Please
contact our Office on 42 841 513 if you have any questions. Year 5 and 6 students from
other primary schools are also welcome to apply for our Primary Band (to learn an
instrument) or Junior Band (1-2 years experience).

Love Bites, Girls Welfare Program Year 9 girls have been inspired and encouraged to take
part in a workshop with a key focus on Sexual Assault and
Domestic Violence hosted by the Illawarra Women’s
Health Clinic professionals. This program is supported
through the welfare program at Woonona High School and
reaches beyond our PDHPE units on respectful
relationships. The girls took part in in a full days worth of
activities with the aim to empower each other to take a
confident stand to help banish gender stereotypes in
society, understand areas of consent and develop further
strategies of being an active bystander. It was wonderful
to hear the students positive feedback and confident voice
throughout the sessions and to support them through
these somewhat difficult and sensitive topics. Thank you to
Belinda for a professionally organised and presented
workshop, we appreciate our time and support our of
students!

Lions 'Youth of the Year' Congratulations to Charlie-Pearl Cram and Elly Moore who were selected to represent the school at the Lions Club 'Youth of the Year' competition. This is a rigorous process in which students must submit a resume and application then undergo an interview with a panel of community members who ask them questions on general knowledge, citizenship and community involvement. Students then attended a dinner at the Woonona Bowling Club at which they had to do two impromptu speeches and a five minute prepared speech. Both Elly and Charlie-Pearl represented our school extremely well and all community members were impressed with their wide range of cultural, sporting and citizenship achievements as well as their leadership within the SRC. Congratulations to Charlie-Pearl who was the overall runner-up and winner of the public speaking prize for 2018. Clare Matthews
