Region V E-Newsletter

It is truly an honor to serve as National Vice President representing the great states of Region V. I want to thank the Region for allowing me to serve in this position and to the Kentucky JCI Senate for all of your support over the years. I look forward to working with each of the state presidents during the coming year as we continue the tradition of leadership that has made Region V a success. My theme for the year is “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler” which means “Let the Good Times Roll”. So with that I say, welcome to a year of fun.

My goals are simple; to promote friendships, fellowship and fun with our fellow senators. I want to see more Senators coming out to our state’s events and meeting other Senators. I want to inspire everyone to get out and visit the other Region V states. There is so much going on in Region V each year and it all starts with the summer tour.

The summer tour is always my favorite time of the year as it gives us the first opportunity of the year for fellowship and fun with our fellow Senators and also gives us the chance to expand on our friendships that we have made over the years. Make plans to join us starting the weekend of July 19th-20th in Montpelier, Ohio for their annual “Pig Roast”. Come out and watch the kissing of the pig on Friday night.

The following weekend; July 26th-28th, we will be traveling to Savory, Illinois for their summer picnic. It’s always a fantastic event and you will get to experience something unique in the “changing of the shirts”. The first weekend in August; August 1st-3rd, is the Kentucky Bourbon Bash. If you have never been before, then you won’t want to miss this year as they celebrate their 15th year hosting this fun event.

The weekend of August 16th-18th we head over to Portage, Indiana for their summer picnic and meeting. The hospitality in Indiana is second to none and we always have a blast. We will be promoting all of our state’s events; including JCI events, on the Region V website, our Facebook page, through the quarterly newsletters and through the US JCI Senate E-news so you will be in-formed and can get involved.

Remember to also keep in mind our mission statement: Our mission is to foster friendships among Senators while supporting the Jaycee movement. This year I am encouraging everyone to support our Jaycees through the Return the Favor program. This is a great program that allows the Senate to give back by assisting and mentoring our Jaycees. It’s a also an opportunity to give back to the organization that meant so much to us in our earlier days and to have

an impact on the development of future leaders of the Senate.

I look forward to serving as your NVP this year and hope that you will join me as we “Let the good times roll” in Region V!

Region V E-Newsletter

Hello from the Commonwealth of Kentucky,

I am honored to serve as Kentucky JCI Senate President for this 2019-20 year, and for those of you going “Hasn’t she been President before?” The answer to that question/statement is “YES”. I first served the Kentucky JCI Senate in 2007-08 year. I now thought I would give it a second try since Will Chester was going forward to be Region V National Vice President. I plan to work hard and travel as much as the health of parents, husband and my own health and work will allow.

Since Will Chester has chosen to “Let the Good Times Roll”, I have chosen the theme “Rolling Down the River”. I have a seasoned board with years of experience: Vice-President John Kelley #52591, Treasurer Jim Dulin #54018, Secretary Donna Cassell #68681, Sergeant-of-Arms Norm Sanders #39446, and Chairman of the Board Keith Schnell #43086.The 15th annual Bourbon Bash is the weekend of August 2nd-3rd. This event is held the first weekend of August since its inception, and as past attendees can attest, is a fun experience. Visit KYJCIsenate.org to get a registration form. We wel-come you with open arms and will show you a fun weekend.

Our other meetings for this year will be: hosting the KY IN Joint meeting in January 2020 (dates to be announced) at the Holiday Inn Louisville East (Hurstbourne) and Region V Spring Fling March 27-29, 2020at the Holiday Inn University Plaza in Bowling Green, KY. At this time I know that I’ll not be able to make the OH Pig Roast due to some conflicts, but hope and plan to attend the Illinois picnic.

Expand Your HorizonsWine Tasting@Bourbon Bash

Friday August 2, 20198:00pm

Bourbon? Several years ago, if someone offered me bourbon, I would have said “Yuck!” I never was interested in bourbon until I attended Bourbon Bash 3 years ago. Then, being open to trying new things, I started tasting different bourbons, even if I didn’t think I would like it. As I learned more about the nuances of bourbon and allowed myself to be open to the potential of liking it, I found that I definitely have developed a taste. Will I order one on the rocks? Probably not, but a sip here or there of my husband’s beverage (much to his dismay) or even in a mixed drink, I find it pretty tasty. And the Bourbon Cream from Buffalo Trace is truly amazing. Makers Mark 46 and Willet are also two of my favorites. I wouldn’t call myself a connoisseur, but because of Bourbon Bash, I am now willing to at least try different bourbons. That Kentucky Hug gets me every time though!

My love of wine started out the same way. As a young inex-perienced girl in my early 20’s, I only drank Merlot, as that was the first wine I tried. Then, as I explored more wines, especially Michigan wines, my wine of choice was the sweet, fruity wines. Granted, at the start of Michigan’s wine boom, the only wine they could produce was sweet wine. For my 21st (plus 10) birthday, I started a tradition that is still going strong. I hosted a wine tasting party with a twist. Attendees brought wine that we bagged and did a blind tasting starting with reds and ending with whites. This way, we didn’t have any preconceived ideas that got in the way of our experience. Over my wine tasting journey, I learned to truly get the most out of the taste, it is best to start with dry and work your way to sweet. However, it still works out as we get to try different wines, sometimes with surprising results. One year, a wine I considered my favorite took last place on my selections!

So, when Terri Sernau and I were approached about the Wine Tasting@Bourbon Bash, we jumped at the chance to share our love of wine. Given that my presidential theme in 2019-20 is “Expand Your Horizons,” we thought that doing the brown bag blind tasting might be fun and offer a way for attendees to experience wine in a different way. We would also like to set a monetary limit of $10-15 per bottle but feel free to bring more than one bottle if there is

something you have been wanting to try. The more the merrier applies to wine too!

So, here is what we will be doing to help participants get a new wine experience:

1. Bring a red, white, or rose wine of various dry to sweet levels by 6pm on Friday.

2. We will do our best to ‘arrange’ them from dry to sweet and then bag them.

3. Matt Sernau has agreed to be our waiter to pour and serve us! Being one of the ‘Outstanding State Presi-dents,’ I am sure he can handle that!

4. We will explore different tastes and ‘mouth feels’ as well as wine adjectives because it is fun to describe wine as ‘barnyard-y’. Yes- that is an actual description.

5. Winners will be picked in each category and prizes will be awarded!

6. Since it is a blind tasting, the people who brought each wine will get a chance to share their story about the wine when we unveil each bag.

I hope you will “Expand your Horizons” to join Terri and me as we explore Wine Tasting@Bourbon Bash! If you have any questions, please contact Terri Sernau: [email protected] or myself:

Ohio kicks off the Region V Summer Tour with the annual Pig Roast on July 19-21 in Montpelier, OH. Jenny Bruner #64688 and Jon Bruner #58932 have once again done a wonderful job of chairing the Pig Roast. Events kick off Friday evening with dinner, socializing, and the kissing off the pig where you will have a chance to pay for someone else to have to kiss the pig. It was a lot of fun last year! Saturday morning, golfers will tee off for the annual Ron Robinson Memorial Tour-nament. Those not golfing will meet for lunch at the fairgrounds, followed by an afternoon of yard games and horse racing with betting. In the evening we will be having our pig roast meal followed by the dessert contest. People donate money to votè for their favorite dessert. All money raised will be going to the Morgan Jones scholarship fund.

Our Ohio Jaycees will be having their summer All-State in conjunction with our Pig Roast. President Annie Yoder and members of JCI Ohio will be joining us for most of our activities this weekend.

On Sunday morning, the Ohio JCI Senate will be holding their summer meeting at the hotel beginning at 9:30 AM. We will be voting on by-law changes, discussing program changes that were made at the convention in Oregon, and discussing our upcoming year.

Hope you can join us as we kick off the Region V Summer Tour!

Greetings fellow Senators. I hope you have been enjoying you first few months as president of your state. I know I have as the 47th president of the MIJCI Senate. We started out with an awesome Year End and Installation Lunch fol-lowed by a Tigers Social on June 29th. Then, a board meet-ing pool party at my house to get the year set up! What a great way to transition into my year.

A little bit about me: I started my Jaycee career in 2002 in Grand Rapids, MI. I spent several years running projects or in a leadership role on the board of directors, both at the local and state level. Some of my favorite leadership positions were Chapter President, Region C Director, and MI JCI Training Director. I aged out of the Jaycees several years ago and lived vicariously through my friends. After becoming a Senator, one of my first projects was a Spring Fling, where I started to meet other Region V peeps. Then, joining the board as Scholarship Chair, then VP, creating the Jeans and Jewels Gala fundraiser, and now, here I am.

By day, I am a guidance counselor with Ann Arbor Public Schools. In my ‘free time’, both my husband, John Ba-deen, and I like to travel, read, and entertain at our home. Whether it’s a BBQ pool party in the summer or games around the fireplace in the winter, we love to have people over. Our three cats, Rocket, Groot, and Norman, also love the attention and belly rubs, when they aren’t hiding in the bathroom cupboard.

Nina Perko-Badeen, #73043 Michigan JCI Senate President 19-20

My theme this year is “Expand Your Horizons.” One of the things I have enjoyed the most with my Senate mem-bership is the comradery and friends I have met around Region V and the United States. That is why I picked “Ex-pand Your Horizons” as my theme this year. My hope is to inspire Michigan Senate members to try new things, visit other states, and get re-acquainted with long lost friends in the Senate organization. Overall, I think it is important to try new things, which is why I am excited to be run-ning the Wine Tasting@Bourbon Bash with Terri Sernau. I hope to see you there!

What a complete honor it is for me to spend this Senate year on the Region V Team!!! Thank you to NVP Will Chester for asking me to serve as his Chief of Staff. When Will asked me to serve the year in this capacity I asked the obvious question of “what exactly do you need me to do”? I’m sure most of you can guess what his response was! “Vette, all I need you to do is keep me in line and make sure I don’t do anything stupid or crazy”!!! Now, most of you can stop chuckling (I know, Vette keep anyone in line???) But, I am up for the challenge and I look forward to an amazing year with the 2019-2020 Region V Team!!!

I feel like I know or have met a large majority of the Senators in Region V, but in case I haven’t here are a few known and unknown facts about me. I am a Michigan Senator and grew up in Metro Detroit just outside of Ann Arbor. I am married (Mark) and have one daughter (Bee) an amazing son in law (Jon) and a simply beautiful one year old granddaughter (Adeline Moon). We have three dogs, yes three! Two 3 yr old Golden Retrievers (Gabe and Chance) a four month old Old English Sheepdog (Greta) and a really cool six year old cat (Leyland). I work for an auto supplier as a Safety & Workers Compensation Manager and have been with my company for 36 yrs. I try and keep myself healthy by working out at the gym, challenging myself with a personal trainer and my recently found passion of Cycling. In my free time I also enjoy traveling, bonfires and fun times with friends and family.

If there is anything I can do to assist the Senators of Region V, please do not hesitate to reach out to me! I look forward to seeing many of you throughout the year as we “Let the Good Times Roll”!!!!

US JCI Senate Foundation- Region V Representative,

I am the new Region V Rep for US JCI Senate Foundation. I have a lot to learn, but this is an area I strongly believe deserves our support. If you have not started your Foundation membership, please consider budgeting for that this Senate year if possible. The $150 donation can even be split, if needed. After that point, contributions are not on a particular schedule, but many people buy tickets or bid on Foundation auction items at meetings. That is enjoyed by people who like to carry something home from a meeting! Another great choice is the 300 Club, where your contri-bution ($10 per numbered ticket or $50 for 6 numbered tickets) enters you in 12 monthly drawings on the 20th of the month, starting July 20, 2019. Each month there are the following winnings possible: 1-$100 winner, 3-$50 winners, 2- $25 winners. Please contact me via email if you would like to get into the 300 Club.

Our donations go toward scholarships! Each state in Region V had a US JCI Senate Foundation Scholarship recipient this year:

MI Anna SunOH Kamryn R. MageeKY Cole Steven WyattIL Chloe WalkerIN Kenzie Knight

Marilyn Burton, #55106 Region V Foundation

Our big Region V fundraiser for the US JCI Senate Foundation is the Silent Auction held during our Annual Meeting, Spring Fling, which will be in Bowling Green, KY on March 27-29, 2020. It is later in March this time, so there’s more time to shop and find those wonderful items that auction off well. Each year we have a wonderful variety of donated items and I expect that same tradition. I love to shop and come up with ideas for different themed baskets. It’s a year long challenge for me, so maybe you would enjoy that hobby also?

Please contact me if questions arise.

Greetings and Happy New (JCI Senate) Year, Region V Senators!

It’s an honor to be asked to serve on the Region V team this year, and entrusted to be the liaison between our state Senate and JCI/Jaycee organizations. Our goal is to continue building on the foundation of strong relationships between our experienced Senators and current members and chapters; fostering friendships not only among fellow Senators, with current JCI members as well while supporting the continued movement that began 100 years ago.

Many conversations have transpired and we’ve kicked around a lot of idea’s over the years, it’s time to take action and blast the lines of communication wide open. The challenge is bringing multi-generational individuals, all passionate about JCI, to the table to discuss exactly what the needs of the chapters and members may be, and then finding the commonalities that tie our five generations together. If you have ideas, suggestions and or proven methods of collaboration with your local/state Jaycees we’d love to here about them. If you’re ready and seeking activities, events or a means to connect, 2019-20 is the ideal time to engage and support as we celebrate a Century of Leadership.

Looking forward to an outstanding year, and connecting Senators and Jaycees across the generations.

Hello Everyone!

Will wanted me to introduce myself and let all of you know that I am going to be the Lotto Ticket SalesChairperson this year! I have to admit, I am really excited about getting more involved with Region V and I’mreally glad Will has given me this opportunity. Many of you know me but for those who don’t I have been an OhioJCI senator since 2005 and was the 75th Ohio Jaycee presi-dent in 2004. I have a masters degree in SpecialEducation and have been an intervention specialist for 26 years; the last 17 of which I have been with DaytonPublic School. Currently, I am teaching a program called credit recovery for students in grades 9-12 at StiversSchool for the Arts.

Now that you know a little more about me here’s the infor-mation on the Lotto Tickets (which is what you reallywant to know and why I’m writing this article).Ticket sales will officially start July 1st.

Tickets are $5 each and if you have a winning ticket you get $50

“Sounds Great!” you say. “I want to win $50 but how do I get my tickets??”

Simple! Each state president will get their tickets (based on 10% of their July 1 membership base) late in June soremember to hit them up or run them down on the 1st of July. However, if those presidents can run faster thanyou, don’t fret. Each staff members is also lucky enough to have 20 tickets to sell so make sure as you “laissezles bon temps rouler” at the Region V main events you get your tickets. FYI the more you buy the better your

Amanda Turner, #65613 Region V Lotto

chances are to win!!

“That’s fantastic! I’ve always wanted a reason to run down my state president”, you say, “So, once I get my ticketshow do I know if I won?”

So many questions. Easy, each ticket will have a 3 digit num-ber. In April 2020, all you have to do is drive toKentucky each night to watch their lottery EVENING pick 3. Just kidding! You can just check the nightly drawingon the internet if you don’t want to do all that driving. If you happen to have a ticket with a number that matchesthe Kentucky evening pick 3 then you win $50. See, easy! So make sure to get your tickets in July!

Now, a public service announcement for the ticket sales people. As the chairperson, I will be collecting andtracking all of the information stubs and money. Please have all checks made out to me (Amanda Turner). Youcan either mail them to me or give them to me when you see me somewhere. Right now, I know for sure I will beat Ohio’s Pig Roast and Kentucky’s Bourbon Bash. Happy Selling!

Amanda Turner #65613Region VLotto Ticket Chairperson

Hello everybody – I’m baaackkkk! Will has asked me to lead this new program being promoted by USJCI Senate and President Lawrence. Actually this is an expansion of what I did nationally for President Pete last year. Allow me to quote from the guidelines:

“Purpose: The guidelines for the Senate Outreach Activa-tion Retention (S.O.A.R.) program are designed to increase involvement, activation and retention of members of the US JCI Senate.”

Getting new members is one thing to retain them requires orientation and activating them. We cannot expect anyone to continue as a member if they are not involved in some level of the organization. And that includes those who are all excited and pay that life membership right away. WE NEED THEM TO BE INVOLVED!

Here is what we (Will, myself and Region V) need all presi-dents to do. Every state already has a 1st Timer’s program. Please ensure that we have that chair’s name and contact info. Next, let us begin to share info on our new members (whether a 79000 number or a 4 digit senator we dusted off and brought to the party!) Please send me the contact info and (if possible) a picture of your new member with a little bio information. Third, at your meetings and events; includ-ing the Summer Tour, the host state will be expected to con-

Ray Ainslie, #44136 Region V S.O.A.R

duct a 1st Timer’s Competition that will include ALL states not just yours. Fairly simple, eh?

Now reporting will include a copy of the instrument used to collect signatures or whatever you use to determine 1st Timer winner. Make it FUN! The purpose is to encourage interaction between new Senators and the old cranky ones! Please send pictures of the 1st Timers and the winner. Make this FUN, get goofy, walk on the wild side and did I say – MAKE IT FUN!!!!

Food for thought – consider adding a mentor program to your 1st Timer program. Assign a current member to the new member to assist in getting them involved. This person should be more of a match-up and not a random pick. Also, please share your successes as well as something that may not have worked well so the other States may benefit.

Until next time – as always - I am Always Believing!
