Welcome back

Page 2: Newsletter 2015 Term 1 Week 1

Welcome back to all students and staff for the 2015 school year. Students have returned

somewhat taller after what sounds like a most enjoyable and relaxing holiday time!

A special welcome is extended to our new students – Laura Hatty, Jack Malone and Josef

Meier (Kindergarten) and Charlie Malone (Yr 1) and staff members - Miss Arnica Buchanan

and Mrs Annie Crocker (teaching). We trust you all enjoy your time with us at Matong Public

School.

Last term finished on a high note with our presentation night and play, in which students

excelled themselves and thoroughly enjoyed. Our 2015 school leaders, George Hatty and

Connor Smith were awarded their captains’ badges during the evening and I look forward to

working with these young leaders this year.

Tuesday this week, all teaching and office staff attended our staff training day here at

Matong P.S. participating in workshop sessions with lively professional dialogue setting the

directions for our classrooms and planning for the many events coming up this year.

On Wednesday of this week, Miss McKelvie and Mrs Crocker have been busy administering

BEST Start Assessments for our kindergarten students. An outline of individual student’s

performance in these literacy and numeracy assessment tasks will be sent home shortly.

This Friday all stage 2/3 students, plus those from Stage 1 who turn eight years of age this

year, will be catching the bus to the Ganmain Pool from 12.30pm till 2p.m. for this week’s

sport in preparation for the Small Schools’ Swimming Carnival which is to be held at

Ganmain Pool on Friday, 13th February The district carnival will be held at Ariah Park on

Thursday 26th February.

Good luck to Samantha, Anthony, Phoenix, Charlie, Rosie, Grace, Erin and Charlotte as they

begin their high school education this week. We are thinking of you in your new schools and

look forward to hearing of your progress.

It is with great sadness that we heard of Miss M’s father’s passing in the holidays. Thank

you to all for your support for Miss M at this very sad time. We welcome Mrs Crocker to

Stage 1, relieving for Term 1 as Miss M takes personal leave to support her mother.

I am very much looking forward to another busy and successful year of learning at Matong

Public School and look forward to catching up with each and everyone over the coming weeks

as we settle into another great year

that family pay a voluntary contribution of $40.00 for each student,

$80.00 for two students or $115.00 for three or more students. It would

be appreciated if this contribution could be paid as soon as personal funds

permit, either as a whole payment or in instalments.

P&C NEWS

Annual General Meeting The P&C AGM will be held next Wednesday 4th February at 7.30pm in the Staff Room. The

P&C does an amazing job supporting our students but can only succeed with your support.

These meetings are a great way to be involved with your child’s schooling in a relaxed, casual

environment. Everyone is very welcome so we hope to see you there.

ATTENDANCE

It is important that students attend school every day unless:

Your child is too sick to go to school

Your child has been injured

Your child has to go to a special religious ceremony

Your child has an infectious disease (such as chicken pox, or measles)

There is a serious family situation which requires their involvement

If your child misses 1 day of school every fortnight between

Kindergarten and Year 6 they will HAVE MISSED 3 TERMS of school by

the end of Year 6.

We have to report to the Department of Education on a regular basis the

number of students whose attendance falls below 85% (that is an average of

3 days absent every 4 weeks) We also have the responsibility to follow up

poor attendance by students and if necessary refer it to the Home School

Liason Officer from the Department who will seek to improve attendance.

DOGS IN THE PLAYGROUND

Section 14 of the ‘Companion Animals Act’(1998) prohibits dogs on school

grounds except where the Principal gives permission. Please adhere to this

law, even if your dog is on a leash. We appreciate your support on this matter.

SIGNING IN AT SCHOOL

When on the school grounds, all visitors are required to come via the front

office and sign in the visitor’s book. It doesn’t matter the length or purpose

of the visit, in order to protect your safety all need to make this process a

priority. We would appreciate your support on this matter
