Our Special Season
After a long and difficult Winter, Summer has finally arrived and we can now truly enjoy the full advantages of the Grosse Pointes and surrounding communities. The trees are recovering with lush leaves, Lake St. Clair is sparkling as you drive along the Shore and neighborhoods are filled with the sounds of young children enjoying their freedom from the daily school routine. Now is the time for picnics in the parks, concerts in the Village or on the lawn at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, walking, golfing and tennis or even an af-ternoon nap outdoors. Some of the most excited are the boaters who have waited a long time to get out on the lake with family and friends and now have their home away from home, only a few miles or less away. Even out-of-towners, often critical of Michigan weather, are
in awe of all the advantages this area offers, including the many new eateries and gather-ing places for all ages. While new opportunities open up with the improved weather, the Senior Men's Club of Grosse Pointe contin-ues the bi-monthly luncheon meetings with warm fellow-ship and top notch speak-ers. The sub-clubs are going strong, especially the golf league and the tennis club, and Special Events provides enjoyment for family and friends (Note: Scenic River Cruise, Tuesday, July 29, Wyandott to Ambassador

Please meet Fred Whitehouse our latest profile of the month. If you have been a patient at Henry Ford Hospital, you may recognize him from his role as chief of the division of endocrinology and metabolism but more recently you would remember him at an SMC meeting, standing tall in bow tie with our senior men’s chorus singing second tenor.
Fred’s medical career began when he graduated from the University of Illinois medical school and completed his internship at Henry Ford and residency at Boston’s Deaconess Hospital.
These beginnings were interrupted for two years during the Korean War when Fred served as a flight surgeon in the Navy.
From the outset Fred’s interests in metabolic diseases led him to specialize in the treatment of diabetes and its effects, where he is an internationally recognized expert. He has been president of both the Michigan and American Diabetes Associations.
In addition to his efforts with these and other organizations he has lectured throughout the country and published well over 150 articles and abstracts on diabetes.
Fred has been president of St James Lutheran Church of Grosse Pointe and member of the boards of Wheatridge Foundation and the League for the Handicapped of Goodwill Industries. He has also been a visiting professor at Emory University, Alabama and even at the University of Hawaii Schools of Medicine.
Fred has been married to his wife Iris for 62 years and has three daughters, eight grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
He resides in Grosse Pointe Woods and enjoys bird watching, opera, travel and visiting his grandchildren and great grandchildren.
`
Fred continues to practice medicine at Ford Hospital as division head emeritus, Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism. When asked when he plans to retire, he replied “When they change the locks on the door.”

Ed Rowady, Charles Rutherford, Bob Hynes, Carl Metzker, Henry Fischer, and Jerry Teagan were invited as representatives the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe to attend the regular meeting of the Senior Men’s Club of Birmingham on Friday, June 13 at The Community House in Downtown Birmingham. Representatives from the Birmingham club had previously attended Grosse Pointe’s May 13 meeting at the War Memorial.
The Birmingham club meets every Friday, except during the month of August and around major holidays. The regular meeting starts at 10:30AM and takes place (including the speaker) before lunch is served at Noon. Members can choose to only attend the meeting. Individual member attendance is recorded at each meeting.
Following the regular meeting and lunch, members of both organizations met to compare notes. Each club has approximately 650 members and has various “sub-club” activities in addition to the regular luncheon meetings. There was general interest in having a joint activity, probably a golf tournament, which will be followed-up after the meeting.

The GPSMC Tennis Club concluded its winter season at Wimbledon Racquet Club with its meet-ing, annual tennis tournament and another free pizza party. Approximately 35 men actively participated in friendly doubles tennis since September, and a dozen inactive players showed up for several social events. The winner of the twenty-first annual Roy Vorhees, Jr. Tennis Tournament was Randy Vorhees, Roy Vorhees’ son (pictured right in the photo). Run-ner-up in the tournament was Randy’s older brother Roy Vorhees III (left). The officers elected for the 2014-15 fiscal year are Al Ramberger, treasurer; Fred Lenard, vice-president; Tom Roberts, president; Roy Vorhees, secretary. Sadly and fondly, we remember six members who passed away this year: “slice” shot master Gerry Le-one, who played till he was 90; athletic and versatile Bob Sattler; one-time tournament runner-up Don Landers; the always affable Charley Ebner; and long time retired Leonard Bartoszewicz and Bill Queen. Now that the weather is inviting, beginning Monday, June 9, we will be playing outdoor tennis at Liggett School on Cook Road on beautiful resurfaced courts. We will be rejoined with our Florida snowbird friends and invite all men 55 and over to come and join us on any Monday, Wednesday, or Friday from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. for healthy exercise and friendly banter. Abilities generally range from mediocre to mediocre plus. Join the fun and make some new friends!

On Tuesday, May 27, the Senior Men’s Club of Grosse Pointe had its annual Honor Student Recog-nition event at their bimonthly luncheon. Students from Grosse Pointe North and South High Schools were seated throughout the Friese Crystal Ballroom at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial, where they could visit with our members over lunch. The stu-dents all had grade point averages of 4.0 or higher. As they were interviewed by their tablemates, it is likely that they learned about their hosts, as well, perhaps hearing about outstanding careers and even accounts of what they did in service to their coun-try.
Certificates of Recognition were handed out to the students by President Ed Rowady. Participating inthe program were Supt Tom Harwood, North Principal Kate Murray and South Principal Matt Outlaw.
The Students were photographed by Jack Williams, as usual, and appear on the next page.

The Boys in the Boat Nine Americans and Their Epic Quest for Gold at the 1936 Olympics By Daniel James Brown
The Readers Frank Markey (313-886-8324)
Reading List
Younger readers of this classic sport story might well be motivated to begin searching out opportuni-ties as these students did. We all would recommend the book.
The reading for July 15, 2014 is A WICKED WAR: CLAY, LINCOLN and the 1846 U.S. Invasion of Mexico. The meeting will be at Frank Markey's home at 19290 Raymond Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. RSVP (313) 886-8324.
There is no meeting in August.
The September book is DIRTY WARS: THE WORLD IS A BATTLEFIELD by Jeremy Seahill. Meeting Location is to be announced.
The "Husky Clipper", with rowers from the University. of Washington, coming from the rear swept ahead of the German entry to win the 1936 Olympics by a sec-ond. The oarsmen who disappointed Hitler were Gor-don Adam, Chuck Day, Don Hume, George "Shorty" Hunt, Jim McMillin, Bob Much, Roger Morris John White and Joe Rants.
The author in talks with Joe Rants in hospice promised to write about the "boat", that is the crew. The author grasped the opportunity to include a review of those political and economic times. He comments that Hit-ler did not recognize the heralds of his doom. Hitler did not see our country's youth as essentially mature, decent, and unassuming, not privileged or favored by anything in particular, just loyal, committed and per-severant. Nor did he foresee that one day thousands such as these would be hunting him down.
The crew appeared to have relived those years often with ten year reenactments. Their stories as recounted to and by Joe's daughter were moving. Joe's par-ent's leaving him didn't fair too well in our discussion though it was noted that the two of them passed along talents: intellectual, musical and mechanical that the lad was able to call on in their absence. The question arose as to what restraints coaches working to find the best of talent in a student body for the noblest goals ought to be under. One Reader said that he couldn't fault the book at all. We all got a better grasp of the sport of rowing and what it takes to win the big one.
