Confession, Penance, Reconciliation have fallen into a bit of a ‘black hole’ in Catholic practice today. We have just come out of "the golden age" of frequent confession of the 1930 –1960’s and the pendulum seems to have swung the other way. Catholics seem to have shifted from an attitude that saw Confession to a priest as the only way of being forgiven to a wider understanding of Reconciliation. This, in itself, is a good thing yet it raises the raw question, ‘Who needs to go to a priest for forgiveness; why go to Confession at all?’ To reconcile is to re-unite, to bring back to harmony, to heal division, separation, and rupture. The Christian perspective seeks reconciliation with God, with one another, between nations and with our environment. The life of Jesus was totally dedicated to RECONCILIATION; the life of Christ's faithful, the Church, is to be a symbol of this reconciliation. Also, to see the relevance of this Sacrament is to answer questions about its role in our lives. The emphasis has been misunderstood in the past. ‘I don't have to go to a priest to be forgiven!’ is hardly the issue. The issue is that this sacrament allows a person, within a communal setting, a CONSTANT EXPERIENCE of on-going awareness of Conversion, a changing of life, a changing of mind and heart. Did you ever notice that people usually don't question the community dimensions of Baptism, Confirmation, Eucharist, Matrimony, Holy Orders, or even Anointing of the Sick? But they always seem to question the need for an instrument, a human mediator, in the Sacrament of Reconciliation! Why? Because confessing one's sins to another human being is difficult. ‘There is no such thing There is no such thing There is no such thing There is no such thing as a part time as a part time as a part time as a part time Christian’ when we Christian’ when we Christian’ when we Christian’ when we follow Jesus. follow Jesus. follow Jesus. follow Jesus.’ Pope Francis

DEAR FAMILIES , SACRAMENT OF PENANCE (RECONCILIATION) First Reconciliation will be celebrated over the ne xt coming weeks at 9.45am on Saturday mornings at Resurrection Church. Confession, Penance, Reconciliation have fallen into a bit of a ‘black hole’ in Catholic practice today. We have just come out of "the golden age" of frequent confession of the 1930 –1960’s and the pendulum seems to have swung the other way. Pope Francis

It is often embarrassing. But that is part of the power of sacramental reconciliation. It makes one honest and humble before God through a human instrument, little chance for self-deception here! RECONCILIATION, as one of the seven sacraments, is a new moment of grace and a time of awareness about our personal and social sin, calling us to remember our Baptismal commitment, our life confirmed in the Spirit, our unity with the Eucharistic people.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION Congratulations to the following children who will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation this Saturday.

PARISH NEWS

Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel)

“Other Church institutions, basic communities and small communities, movements, and forms of

association are the source of enrichment for the Church, raised up by the Spirit for evangelizing

different areas and sectors. Frequently they bring a new evangelizing fervour and a new capacity for

dialogue with the world whereby the Church is renewed. But it will prove beneficial for them not to lose contact

with the rich reality of the local parish and to participate readily in the overall pastoral activity of the particular

Church. This kind of integration will prevent them from concentrating only on part of the Gospel and the Church,

or becoming nomads without roots.” #29

Cardinal Tagle

His Eminence Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle the Archbishop of Manila is coming to Melbourne. He will lead a Lectio

Divina (the ancient practice of slow, contemplative praying of the Scriptures) session and then celebrate Mass in St

Patrick’s Cathedral on Tuesday 5 August between 6pm and 8.30pm. There is a 150 voice choir leading the singing.

All welcome, no booking; but arrive early!

Feast of the Assumption

The feast of the Assumption (15 August) this year falls on a Friday. We will have two Masses 9.15am with our school

participating and an evening Mass at 7.15pm. This is a Holy Day of Obligation.

Clergy Conference

Fr Noel will be at the annual Archdiocesan Clergy Conference during the first week of August. There will be a

Communion Service on Tuesday 5 August but no Masses on either Monday 4 or Thursday 7 August. Mass will be

celebrated as usual on Friday 8 August.

Cardinal Tagle is one of the presenters at the conference.

Facebook

Have you visited our Facebook yet? You might be surprised how good it is! You can go to our web www.res-

parish.org and click on the Facebook link. It is good to know both our web and Facebook sites; saves ringing the

Parish Office asking what time is Mass at Easter, Christmas and other major feasts…like the above-mentioned feast.

Counters still needed…

Any parishioner willing to take a turn once every 8 weeks at counting our collections is asked to contact the Parish

Office or leave their details at the Welcome Desk.

New Microphone

The Ambo microphone is new. It has two switches a small red button at its base and a mute button on its side. When

the red light is showing the microphone is on. However all Proclaimers are asked know how the microphone works

BEFORE Mass.

Archbishop of New York

A reminder that His Eminence Cardinal Timothy Dolan the Archbishop of New York will be the principal celebrant at

our 10.30am Mass on Sunday 17 August.

After Mass he will stay for an informal question and answer session with parishioners.

Do You Say Thank You?

Hopefully you do thank the Lord for coming into your heart when you receive Holy Communion. However the correct

verbal response when you receive the Body or Blood of Christ at Communion is “Amen”. The meaning of the word

Amen and the rationale behind it has been in our recent Bulletins.

Some parishioners are still saying thank you!

Group Leaders

There will be a meeting for all group leaders on Tuesday 29 July in the Community Centre. The meeting will

commence at 7pm.
