The first project meeting

took place in Lithuania,

Šiauliai secondary school

in May, 2013. The aim of

the meeting was to learn

how to play Lithuanian

traditional games, to in-

volve as more people as

possible into sport activi-

ties, to popularize healthy

lifestyle.

During the meeting the

Lithuanian language les-

son were given to Portu-

guese students. Also

students were introduced

Lithuanian traditions,

architecture, Lithuanian

traditional food and other

heritage, various excur-

sions around famous

Lithuanian sights were

organised. The interna-

tional sports festival

“Vijoliai Cup” took place

at school during the

meeting at school . Not

only teams from Portu-

guese school-partner and

Šiauliai secondary school,

but also teams from other

Lithuanian schools,

teams from Latvia and

Poland participated in it.

During this festival there

were a lot of competitions

of various modern sport

events, such as: basket-

ball, football, rugby and

others, but the biggest

attention was paid to

traditional sports and

games. Students played

“Ripka”,-Lithuanian tradi-

tional team-game. A team

from Šiauliai Sauletekis

gymnasium was invited to

teach students to play

this game. Coaches of

this team recreated au-

thentic game, made

sticks for this game ac-

cording ancient technolo-

gies and sow folk cos-

tumes. A lot of different

traditional games were

played as well, such as

Kerėplą",

„Medžioklę“ (“Hunting”),

„Kiaulytę“( “Piggy”)

„Jojam į turgų“ ( “Let’s

ride to the market”),

"Trečiasai bėk" ( “The

third, run”),

"Gužučius" (“The

storks”) , "Mušt koja" (“Hit

the leg”) and other inter-

esting games.

Except the international

sports festival there were

organised a lot of other

activities. Portuguese and

Lithuanian students, par-

ticipants of the project

were introduced Lithuani-

an traditional food , crafts

and domestic chores.

They tried to bake bread

according the old recipes

and technologies, were

shown how the old wind-

mill works. At the Vida

Stankuniene’s traditional

Lithuanian hut

“Žemaitiška pastogė”

students and teachers

participated in creational

activities, danced Lithua-

nian folk dances, played

more traditional games.

Participants learnt to play

more than 15 traditional

games, and also got ac-

quainted with the rules of

a lot of games. Not only

students and teachers,

but also students’ par-

ents, school workers and

inhabitants from the

school neighbourhood par-

ticipated in project activi-

ties.

Students’ free time was

devoted to sport as well.

Portuguese students togeth-

er with local children from

neighbouring houses often

played traditional games,

football, basketball, volley-

ball, also they organised

local tournaments. Playing

together children from both

countries shared their expe-

rience, taught each other to

play, and, of course, learnt

each other’s languages

It was with great excite-

ment that the mobility to

Siauliai.

After the selection, and

all the contacts made

with the students inter-

ested, the news ran

around the school and

everybody talked about it.

About a month before

going we had a meeting

with all the parents of the

students involved, with

the participation of the

school principal and of

the coordinators of all the

Comenius projects and of

this particular bilateral

project.

There the first infor-

mation was given as the e

-mail contacts of the Lith-

uanian hosts. The way

these projects work was

clearly explained, with

particular attention to

details to accommodation

and food. The parents

and students reaction

was very good.

Then at school the stu-

dents, in several subjects,

got in touch with the reali-

ty of the country they

were going to visit.

In the subject of geogra-

phy they found out where

it was located; in history

they learned about the

history and customs; in

Portuguese and English

they wrote texts and in

ICT they used Google

Earth and made projects

such as a blogue; in PE

they played traditional

games.

A week before departure

date, we held a meeting

to clarify all doubts and

questions parents might

have and to make the

whole mobility trip opera-

tional and doable. In this

meeting were present all

the adults accompanying

the students, the school

board of directors that

has always supported the

project.

From there to departure

there were badly slept

nights due to the respon-

sibility we were undertak-

ing taking 20 students in

a mobility across Europe,

for 10 days.

The activity program was

full of diversified and

interesting activities, with

cultural and sports

events, with the highlight

point being the participa-

tion in an international

football tournament with

football teams from Lat-

via, Poland, Byelorussia

and Lithuania. The stu-

dents were a little bit

older but our school

scored in second; we also

participated in several

other sports events with a

non-competitive charac-

ter.

Globally, according to our

students, most f them got

actively involved in all the

activities, there no regis-

tration of sickness or

lesions or any other prob-

lems that couldn’t be

solved properly by teach-

ers, at the time.

It was an extremely wor-

thy mobility and all the

goals set up were well

achieved, it was especial-

ly useful because it al-

lowed the students to get

into close contact with

the everyday life and way

of living of another cul-

ture quite different from

ours, taking in account

the way of living, food,

work at school and na-

tional economy.

We should focus on the

great empathy achieved

with the colleagues from

Lithuania as with our

students and their hosts.

The interaction with such

a reality permitted our

students to obtain a dis-

similar vision of their

school, of all they are

offered their conditions

and all the services and

facilities at their disposal

making them more alert

to differences and

learned how to appreci-

ate things a bit more.
