St. Bede's Catholic College Specialist Science and Sports College Issue 198 12th June 2015 T: 0117 377 2200 E: [email protected] W: www.stbedescc.org YEAR 8 STEM DAY The Technology department was bustling last week as year 8 pupils spent the day with Sciensts and Technologists from UWE Bristol for a day of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The different ways in which the pupils chose to approach tasks were as varied and excellent as the projects themselves, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Congratulaons to Sneha Thomas, Mahew Richardson and Ciaran Penney who successfully cracked the ‘DNA code breaking’ compeon. OLIVER Over 180 pupils were involved in our college producon of Lionel Bart's seminal musical Oliver on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Pupils have been rehearsing for months and their singing, acng and dancing talents were on full display in the memorable songs as Consider Yourself, Oom Pah Pah, and As Long as He Needs Me. Pupils were involved in band, art direcon, set design, stage management, lighng and sound. The audience on both evenings joined us in congratulang the enre cast and crew for a wonderful performance.

    YEAR 8 STEM DAY The Technology department was bustling last week as year 8 pupils spent the day with Scientists and Technologists from UWE Bristol for a day of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The different ways in which the pupils chose to approach tasks were as varied and excellent as the projects themselves, and they thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Congratulations to Sneha Thomas, Matthew Richardson and Ciaran Penney who successfully cracked the DNA code breaking competition.

    OLIVER

    Over 180 pupils were involved in our college production of Lionel Bart's seminal musical Oliver on Wednesday and Thursday of this week. Pupils have been rehearsing for months and their singing, acting and dancing talents were on full display in the memorable songs as Consider Yourself, Oom Pah Pah, and As Long as He Needs Me.   • Are you in Year 12? Are you interested in studying: Law, Politics, Economics or Business Studies at University?

    If you are in Year 12 and are interested in studying any of these subjects at University, then you might like to attend a taster session on Monday 29th June, periods 1 and 2. Professor Charlotte Villiers will be visiting St Bedes as part of the University of Bristols Academic Ambassador programme. She is offering a free taster session in which she will discuss what it is like to study these subjects at university as well as how to apply for the LNAT for those of you considering a career in Law. You will also be given general advice on how to apply for a university place and what to look for in a University. Those studying Law or Economics in Year 12 will automatically have a place on this free taster session, but all interested Year 12 students are welcome to attend. Please see Mrs Lindsay or sign up on the sheet located in the Sixth Form Reception (Mrs Prings office) by Wednesday 24th June.

    GREAT BRITAIN ACROBATIC GYMNASTICS TRIAL

    Congratulations to year 9 pupil Kenedi Cross who last weekend was invited to trial for the Great Britain Acrobatic Gymnastics Squad. Kenedi, who is a member of Harriers Acrobatic Gymnastics at Patchway, started Gymnastics at the age of 4 and currently trains 12 hours a week. If successful at the trial, along with her Gymnastic partner, Kenedi will represent Great Britain in the European Championships in Germany and the World Championships in China. Kenedi will find out if she was successful at the end of July. Kenedi is also due to compete in July to retain her title in the Turin Cup in Italy. A bright future awaits this young lady!

    LITERACY DAYCHARITY BOOK SALE On Thursday 18th June we will be holding a charity book sale. This is to promote reading and at the same time raise money for a worthy cause. Please could you send in any suitable books in good condition, that we could sell on the day; this could include novels, cookery books, autobiographies or any other texts that are appropriate for pupils and their families. Books can be put in a box at reception or in the library. Thank you!

    SPORTS FESTIVAL Nineteen Year 10 pupils completed their Sky Living For Sport Project this week. The pupils have been busy preparing their Sports Festival and improving their leadership skills for the last two months. The festival, which took place at St. Bernards Primary, was thoroughly enjoyed by Year 3 and 4 pupils. Well done.

  • VACANCIES The College has a vacancy for a cleaner. The post is for 16 hours a week 3.15 to 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Closing date for receipt of completed applications is Friday 19 June 2015. St Bedes pays the living wage7.65p per hour. The college is also increasing its team of SMSAs and will have vacancies for two new members of staff to start in September 2015. The hours of work are 1.10 to 2.10pm Monday to Friday, term time only. The hourly rate for the post is 7.65 per hour which equates to 211 per month. Closing date for receipt of completed application forms is Friday 26 June 2015. All posts at St Bedes are subject to a 6 month probationary period. The successful candidate will be required to undergo a Disclosure and Barring Service Check before starting work.     SUMMER HOLIDAY SPORT CAMPS Throughout the school summer holidays St Bede's Community Sport will be running 6 weeks of sports camps from 9am-3pm each week from Monday to Friday. The camps will consist of multi-sports and football and are open to be both boys and girls aged 7-14 years of age. The cost of the camps is 10 per day or 45 per week with a discount available for siblings.     BBC WORLD MUSIC DAY

    Friday 5th June was BBC World Music Daya nationwide celebration of

    music, aiming to bring people together across generations and communities

    through their love of music. Congratulations to Rhiannon Davies, Catriona

    Davies, Nathalie Canvin, Katie Norris, Isobel Romero and Darragh Sinclair

    who were invited, as member of the Bristol Youth Choir, to sing at the

    Colston Hall. The event was broadcast on the BBC One Show and local news

    and radio channels. It was just fitting that BBC World Music Day was the day

    in which our Year 11 pupils sat their GCSE Music examination!

    FOOTBALL

    Congratulations to year 9 pupil Genetius Teboh who heard recently that he has been given an extended two year contract at Bristol City Football Academy. Genetius, who trains three times a week at the academy, has also been selected for England Trials this summer. We wish Genetius the very best of luck! A wonderful achievement!
