A NOTE FROM OUR GUIDANCE COUNSELLOR Building Stronger Families One Meal at a Time!

I know that many families are busy families... and I know that most families want to continue to strengthen their relationships with each other. Families can strengthen themselves by taking time to tune into each other and really listen, having fun together, helping one another, discussing values, creating family rituals, and celebrating together.

So how can we do all this when time is so limited? Well, this can all be done at the dinner table!

Here’s how: Commit to eating dinner together each night – if dinner isn’t possible, have family breakfast or supper.

Turn off ALL technology – TV, computers, iPads, mobiles etc.

Food - Keep it as simple and stress free as possible by: Pre-making meals on the weekend and freezing them Choosing meals that are fast to assemble Having everyone pitch in

Fun - Make mealtime fun by: Creating meals based on favourite books, like Green Eggs and Ham or Quidditch

Stew from Harry Potter Having indoor picnics Letting kids pick music to cook to Letting kids choose ingredients for Family MasterChef Engaging kids in great conversation, which is always fun Playing games at the table e.g. like two truths and a lie, and have

everyone else at the table guess which is which Playing with your food e.g. have kids arrange salad into a face on a plate

Conversation - Make mealtime matter because the table is one of the only places left where families consistently have conversations together:

Tell stories about grandparents and other relatives – about romance, work and overcoming adversity Tell stories about earlier times in your lives Ask open-ended questions so kids can talk Use real-world events to talk to your kids about topics that are important to your family Make plans and dream together

Visit http://thefamilydinnerproject.org/getting-started/ for some more great information on the following: Food - One pot wonders, using what you’ve got, build your own, comfort foods, before and afters Fun - Fun with food prep, dinner games, between dinner and desert Conversation - Conversation starters, pickles and predicaments, challenging conversations or visit their links

SCHOOL PHOTOS School Photos were sent home with the students this week.

If you have any issues with the photos please contact Advanced Life Photography directly on 1300 728 972.

Buongiorno! Where in the world is Steve (our travel buddy) and Mrs Groves? We have been immersing ourselves in the world map and comparing where we are and where Steve is each day.

This week he has been to Italy, Switzerland and France. We have made pizza and said thanks in Italian. Grazie! We have painted the Swiss Alps and we have made crepes and drawn the Eiffel Tower. Listening to songs from other countries has been interesting too. Frere Jacque is about a monk, brother Jacob or brother John, who has overslept and is urged to get up.

On the magic board we listened to a story called “Me on the Map”. It compares ‘me’ and where I am in relation to the world. We have looked at the maps of our city, our state and our world.

Our letter this week is Q. We listened to a story called the “Kindness Quilt” by Nancy Elizabeth Wallace. This gave us the idea to make a kindness quilt. We will use this quilt in our friendship mass in Week 3. Other “q” words were queen, quiet and question. We then realised that our state also starts with q……Queensland!

Next week we plan to discover some iconic features about different places in the world. Please bring in some glad wrap or alfoil rolls. (No toilet rolls please). We are hoping to collect enough for one per student!

Arrivederci!

What a wonderful start to Term 3 in Year 1, with our new student Katie arriving. Katie has settled in very well this week and we are so lucky to have her in our class.

We started the week by individually looking at goals to strive towards throughout the term, hence the diligent and focused way we have commenced our studies.

We were able to share our stories and work from last term with each other. Everyone in the class was left amazed with the outstanding talents we have in Year 1.

We also learnt about Mary this week in Religion along with practising reciting the Hail Mary.

Wow, it is already term three! We have already learned so much and guess what? We have had a visit from Discovery Fairies! We came to school on Tuesday and they had set up our Discovery

wall full of all sorts of interesting things such as books, online stories, cartoon characters, comic strips, puppets, posters of Rio 2 and much much more.

There were also the letters 'F.Y.I', we spent so long trying to work out what this could mean but still weren't sure about what our overall topic could be. In the afternoon, we received a letter from the fairies explaining everything to us and it makes much more sense now. The letters stand for “Feed Your Imagination.” They told us that we can feed our imagination by reading stories and pictures and even movies.

They also told us that we will be going on two excursions this term! We can't wait! In literacy we have been learning about predictable and non-predictable texts and we have also been focussing on adjectives this week. In numeracy we have been looking at dates on the calendar and the seasons and we have also been looking at time, o'clock, half past, quarter past and quarter to. We hope that you have a lovely weekend.

Term Three is here and we are go, go, go! It’s all about the SotS World Festival!

What is that, you ask? Well, last term we learnt so much about other countries’ cultures, food and traditions that we wanted to share all of our wonderful new knowledge with the whole school.

Some of us thought they wanted to have quizzes for the other kids, taste testings and even performances, so we thought why not showcase them in a festival for kids, teachers and parents. We worked hard for many weeks of last term to plan out what the festival would look like and how we would advertise it. We even got Mimi’s mum in, a renowned event planner, to give us some feedback about our ideas before we pitched the idea to Mrs Bakon on Tuesday.

We made her a booklet with information about our logo, mascot, posters, how we would advertise and even information booths. Zoe and Jessica made a great video advertisement so we put that with our booklet for Mrs Bakon to watch. Honestly, we think she was impressed… that’s why she approved our idea! Stay tuned for more information about SOTS World Festival in Week Six!

Welcome back to another fun-filled term! We hope you all had a relaxing break! Our most exciting news this term is that we are off to Dreamworld next Thursday!!!!

Our discovery learning this term is all about sustainability – What is it? How does it work? Why is it essential? How does the environment support the lives of people and other living things? How can people use places and environments more sustainably?

We have asked Dreamworld to prepare a talk for us on their sustainable practices. We want to know about the general running of the park when it comes to caring for the animals and their environments, waste management, energy use, water use and what practices they have in place or are they thinking of introducing in the future. We hope it is a fun and informative day for all of us. Another exciting part of our week is our new writing time! We set aside time each week for writing stories using the best possible handwriting. We have been amazed at what the children are capable of when they take their time! We are really focussing on handwriting this term and taking pride in their work. We hope to see a big improvement in the quality of their bookwork. During maths rotations we have been learning about angles – acute, obtuse, right, reflex and straight. We have been looking for examples of all of these in our environment and have been taking photos on the iPads. We’ve then inserted these photos into a Pages document on the iPads and labelled them accordingly. Hope you all have a great weekend!

After our lovely two week break it is refreshing and nice to be back at school. When we first got back to school we caught up with all our friends and had discussions about what we did over the break. Then we got stuck into some work!

6&7

We have revised some maths and have just started learning about 24 hour time. We found out that in this term, we will be learning the genre of ‘Information Reports’. We are excited to learn a new genre and start researching all the different facts and information to add into our reports.

We started a new topic in Discovery Learning and opened the ‘Immersion Suitcase’. Inside we found all sorts of books and items related to different cultures, countries, animals, habitats and travel. We were very intrigued to find out exactly what it is we will be learning about this term. Some of us are continuing to finish off our projects from last term. There are many students who have done amazing work!

In PE this week we are learning the skills of European Handball. Mrs O’Donnell has started to take athletics training on a Monday and Wednesday morning in preparation for the athletics carnival.

Year 5 has been looking after the vegetable garden for Miss Bell’s Gardening Club. She has been very happy with how we have stayed committed to the group and have all taken responsibility for looking after the garden on the days that we water. On Thursday at lunch time other children from different classes come down to join in the gardening.

It is nice to be back at school with our friends and teachers! Welcome back to Term Three. We hope you have a great holiday. This term we are doing Australian art and history for Discovery Learning. We began with a big brainstorming session. Our question was “What is Art?” We all came up with our own

definition and each one was different. But that’s okay because Art’s like that. It means different things to different people. Most did agree that it’s creative and makes others feel and think in unexpected ways.

After that we made a story with Aboriginal Art symbols and then dot painted it – that was great fun! It requires a good attention span but when you get going it’s absorbing and calming at the same time.

Japanese is back on in Term 3 and this week we learned about the words and symbols for the different colours. During 2014 each year level will participate in a project of compassion and selflessness - to be lighthouse keepers and help those less fortunate in the world along their journey. We've decided to help bring hunger down by raising money for World Vision's work in some of the poorest parts of the world. We've decided to give up our normal meals for a day as part of the Forty Hour Famine to raise this money.

It is hoped that that effort will inspire you, your extended family and friends to support this great cause by going to the Support and Donation Page - CLICK HERE to donate using the “give now” button. The more people who know about this great cause the better, so you could also help us by sharing the link below with YOUR social networks.

Mr Stone said to mention that all the photos of Term 2 will have their own gallery soon and pictures from this Term will be updated with the latest photos and video of the Seniors doing whatever interesting stuff we’ve been getting into at the end of most weeks - click here.

The Serenity Prayer

God grant me the serenity

to accept the things I cannot change;

courage to change the things I can;

and wisdom to know the difference.

Living one day at a time;

enjoying one moment at a time;

accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;

taking, as He did, this sinful world

as it is, not as I would have it;

trusting that He will make all things right

if I surrender to His Will;

that I may be reasonably happy in this life

and supremely happy with Him

forever in the next.

Amen.
