GRACIOUSNESS

At this time of the year, no group is more aware of the significance

of the closing events of the year than the Year 12s. This awareness

naturally is due to the fact that the Year 12s are experiencing so many

activities and events on a daily or weekly basis which for them are ‘last

On life’s journey, adults in particular are very aware of the importance

of establishing ‘good starts,’ this is particularly in the minds of parents

as they try to establish good foundations in all aspects of their children’s

lives in order to ‘set them up for a successful life.’

At this time of the year it is good finishes that are important, sometimes

critically so. It may be vital that a student in any Year level needs their

best results to lift their overall performance to a level that they feel

comfortable with. It may be that students feel that academically and

or in terms of school relationships they need to end the year well in

preparation for the Year ahead.

For all Year 12s across the College, finishing the year well in terms of

their relationships at Grace College is critical. It is important for Grace

SPECIAL MOMENTS

Life in modern day schools with young people full of life, energy

and enthusiasm, is often frenetic and incredibly fast paced.

At Grace Caboolture, we seem to be constantly celebrating,

acknowledging and recognising, as so many people are achieving

so many amazing things. And yet, in the midst of this abundant life

of growth and joy, chapels this week afforded a special occasion

for quiet and solemn reflection. Sensitively facilitated by Mrs

Felicia Neldner, students were given the opportunity to pause and

remember loved ones who have died in recent times and recognise

the loss that others in our community may have experienced.

Drawing a connection from All Saints Day, quite a number of

students seemed to find meaning in the simple act of lighting a

candle in remembrance and celebration. Mrs Neldner shared the

Christian message of hope and joy for those who put their trust

in Jesus, especially in the midst of some of the sadder and more

difficult parts of life.

FILM NIGHT

If it is energy, life and creativity we are looking for, then look no

further than last Friday night’s Film Night held at the Morayfield

Cinemas. On show for everyone to see and enjoy was some of the

finest evidence of Creative Thinking, Collaboration, and Teamwork

and ICT skills. I know most parents who attended Film Night will

share my ‘jaw dropping’ amazement, at the quality of work being

produced here at Grace under the outstanding direction of Mr

Shayne Grieve. I would like to pass on a sincere thank you to

the Grace Caboolture community for the brilliant way that you

have embraced this unique celebratory night of home grown

entertainment. “Well done to all!” I say.

LEAPING LEO THE LION

Great excitement unleashed itself on to the whole school assembly

this week, with the revealing of Grace Caboolture’s new mascot Leo

the Lion. Ask your students to describe the energy and hysteria as

Leo made his secret entrance on to the stage and into the life and

traditions of Grace Caboolture. Fun days ahead! A special thank

you, on behalf of the College, to our school captains Simaima

Gordon and Mallory Gardner, for the outstanding job they have

done all year in leading our school assemblies (last one this week).

Always fun, always inclusive, always positive and sensitive and such

a blessing to our community. Thank you both!

GRACE CELEBRATES

If you have never been to ‘Grace Celebrates’, come! If your student

is in the Middle School and you think the night is mainly a Year 12

graduation ceremony, come anyway. I can honestly say I have loved

every one of the ‘Grace Celebrates’ that I have attended and if you

want to be inspired by the positivity of young people and all that

they are achieving with their lives, then you will not be disappointed.

It truly is a blessed night! ‘Grace Celebrates’ will be held on Friday

2 November 2018 at Boondall Entertainment Centre. Doors open

from 6:00pm.

On Friday 19 October we held an Aware Day, with some of our

amazing Year 9 students from Mrs Prinsloo’s Christian Studies class

organising stalls to raise money for the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Students organised a Sausage Sizzle, Ice Cream stall and Lolly

Bag stall, raising awareness and funds for a variety of causes that

INDONESIA SERVICE-LEARNING TOUR 2019

We recently had the pleasure of announcing that in July 2019,

Grace College will be offering the opportunity for a team of

students and staff to visit Indonesia on a Service-Learning tour. This

tour will take place in various locations throughout North Sumatra

and would see the team from Grace College meet up with teams

from our two Indonesian partner schools; HKBP Sidikalang and

HKBP Lawe Sigalagala. This will not be a project-based trip (i.e.

building something), it will be a relationship-based trip with the

focus on building friendships, helping the Indonesians learn English

and mutual learning from one another’s culture, faith and way of

life. We especially hope to connect through playing games/sport

and making music. As well as camping with students and staff from

our partner schools, our team will get to visit an orphanage, a

school for the disabled and other ministries run by the HKBP church

in North Sumatra. We will visit the famous Lake Toba district for

some fun (tourist-style) too. Interested students should collect an

information booklet from the Ministry Office. Please note: There

will be a Parent Information Night for this tour on Mon Nov 5 at

6pm in the Rothwell Chapel. Please contact Kris Forman on kris_

[email protected] if you have any questions.

LYQ Summer Camps

The ever-popular LYQ Explode and LYQ Blast Summer holiday

STUDENT PRAYER GROUP

Every Friday at Morning Tea, students from all year levels meet

together in the Chapel for our Student Prayer Group, to pray for our

school, students and community. Last Friday, we met for the last time

with our Student Prayer Group Year 12 Leaders. We particularly

want to say a massive thankyou to Maureen Malesa, Ayo Bantale

and Miriam Kotzur, who have faithfully prepared and led this group

incredibly each week for the past two years. We are excited to see

Prayer Group continue to grow in the future, with some awesome

new student leaders stepping up.

SEASONS COME AND GO

I was excited to fly

to Darwin last weekend. It is not

a place that I ever thought

I would visit, but an opportunity

arose to accompany my

husband for the weekend

while he was working

up there. It certainly is a

town of contrasts with rich culture,

fascinating history and natural beauty.

Two ‘highly recommended’ Darwin experiences

were the viewing of the sunset at the Mindil

Beach Markets and the exhilaration of the

infamous Adelaide River Crocodile Jumping Tour - it was definitely an adrenaline

rush seeing wild crocs leaping and snapping at meat.

Darwin’s activities are dictated by the ‘wet season’ and I visited just before the rains

were due. The Mindil Beach Markets had finished a few days before I came and the

Croc Jumping Tour had one more weekend before the area would flood and the

tour closed for six months.

For me, this was a reminder that we all go through seasons in our lives. I am the

mother of a Year 12 student so I am very aware of bubbling emotions of sadness,

joy, relief and uncertainty as my near-adult son gets ready to walk out of the school

gates. You may have a middle- school child almost embarking on senior school

and so you know the hard work and extra effort involved to support them through

it.

The book of Ecclesiastes has ageless wisdom about dealing with the many seasons

of life. Chapter 3:1-8 emphasizes that there is a time for all things and that God

sees us through each phase of our life. The verse that many Year 12 parents may

be struggling with is verse 6 ‘a right time to hold on and another to let go.’ As

Grace Celebrates looms on Friday and the final fortnight fast approaches, it is our

time to ‘let go’ and allow our seniors to graduate and say goodbye.

Trusting God in each season is the key to having peace in our lives. ‘We should

make the most of what God gives, both the bounty and the capacity to enjoy it,

accepting what’s given and delighting in the work. It’s God’s gift! God deals out

joy in the present, the now.’ Ecclesiastes 5:19-20 MSG.

Just like trusting in the strength of the metal mesh on the side of the croc boat, we

need to place our faith in someone who has proven to be trustworthy and true to

His promises. In my experience, every time, I have found Jesus to be the solid rock

I stand on to weather the seasons of life. His love and faithfulness is definitely not a

load of crock.

EXCITING CHANGES AHEAD FOR SPORT AT GRACE CABOOLTURE IN 2019Sport is big part of our culture at Grace Lutheran College Caboolture due to the physical, social and emotional health benefits it provides. We encourage all of our students to engage in a range of learning and development opportunities, which cater for different interests, physical ability, age and gender of our students. These opportunities are divided into three bands – Competitive Co-Curricular Sport, Recreation Sport (non-competitive/fun activities), and as of 2019, the new GLC Sporting Excellence Program. This will include the GLC Sporting GOALS program and the Futsal Playing Excellence program.

GLC SPORTING EXCELLENCE PROGRAMIn 2019, we will launch a multi-sport excellence program, GLC Sporting GOALS. This program has been specifically designed to suit the needs of high performing students in any sport through a holistic approach to athlete development.

GLC Sporting GOALS is a timetabled class that will occur once a week, which offers quality mentoring and guidance throughout their sporting journey, all while working towards their sporting and academic goals.

APPLY NOW: Applications for the 2019 GLC Sporting GOALS program at our Caboolture Campus are now open. To apply, please download the GLC Sporting GOALS Application Form. Applications close on Friday 7 December. CLICK HERE

The Futsal Playing Excellence Program is open for boys and girls, from Years 7-12. It will be an ongoing skills and development program that will offer students the opportunity to work with highly experienced coaches and take part in regular fixtures throughout the year. Students can apply to be a part of this exciting new program at the beginning of Term 1, 2019.

INTER-HOUSE TRIATHLONOur annual inter-house triathlons for Senior School and Middle School students was held last Wednesday and Thursday in some pretty sweltering conditions. While many of the students kept hydrated throughout the day, it was clear that students had to dig deep to complete in the carnival. I was impressed by the grit shown by all of our competitors throughout the two days of the event and there were some remarkable performances.

I have to say that I was more impressed (and pleased) by the way in which students stood up for one another throughout the event. Whether it was helping out with slipped chains or offering water in cups to passing runners, there were just so many wonderful examples of servant leadership on show. One particular student offered his bike up to another competitor, whose bike had broke, just so the other student could continue in the race. He then fixed his bike while the other student lapped him and then swapped back over. Grace at work!

There did have to be a winner for the event and a big congratulations goes to Orion for taking out the trophy this year. There was not a lot of difference between nominations for teams this year and it came down to performances in a few age groups.

SPORTS AWARDS NIGHTThe big night of sporting celebration approaches! We are still chasing some RSVP slips from students so please make sure they come back to Student Services as soon as possible.

It will be a fantastic night where we can celebrate not only student achievement in sport, but also the dynamic community we have at Grace Caboolture. If your students was not an invited athlete, but would like to come and support other students, we would love to have them along and just ask that you let Student Services know that the student and potentially accompanying parents will be attending.

14 GRACE COLLEGE CABOOLTURE

NEWSLETTER 17, 2018

Key features include:

• New and redeveloped Queensland Curriculum

Assessment Authority (QCAA) senior syllabuses,

• External assessment in most senior subjects,

• New quality assurance processes to strengthen quality

and comparability of school-based assessment,

• Changes to Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE)

eligibility requirements, and

• Introduction of Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)

replacing the current Overall Position (OP) for university

study edibility through the Queensland Tertiary

Admissions Centre (QTAC).

QUEENSLAND CERTIFICATE OF EDUCATION (QCE)

The QCE is Queensland’s senior secondary schooling

qualification. It is internationally recognised and provides

evidence of senior schooling achievements. To achieve their

QCE, students must complete a set amount of learning, at

a set standard, in a set pattern, while meeting literacy and

numeracy requirements.

The flexibility of the new QCE system means that students

can choose what path of study best matches their learning

and career goals. The College will assist students to develop

their individual plan and a QCAA learning account will be

opened. This learning account will be used to track their

progress towards achieving a QCE during their senior phase

of study.

Learning accounts are accessed at www.studentconnect.

qcaa.qld.edu.au and students will use a Learning Unique

Identifier (LUI) and password to track their QCE progress.

Students undertaking a Vocational Qualification will also

need to apply for a Unique Student Identifier (USI) to keep

track of all vocational training at https://www.usi.gov.au/

students/create-your-usi

More information on the QCE is available on the QCAA

website. https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/newsnr-

assessment-te. Grace College also provides extensive

support to students as they plan and complete their senior

study.

SUBJECT STRUCTURE AND EXAMINATIONS

All senior subjects are split into 4 units of work. The

assessments completed in Units 1 and 2 are formative and

are designed to prepare students for Units 3 and 4.

In Units 3 and 4 students will complete three summative

internal (school-based) assessment items. These items are

endorsed (approved) by the QCAA before they are handed

out and are marked using Instrument Specific Marking

Guides to ensure quality and consistency of judgements.

By the end of Term 3 of Year 12, students will know their

marks for 75% of a given subject, except in Mathematics and

Science subjects, where they will know 50% of their mark,

leaving the external exams to determine the remainder of a

student’s subject marks.

The end of Term 3 and beginning of Term 4 will be used

to revise and prepare students for subject specific external

exams, which are written and marked externally by the

QCAA, but facilitated at the College.

New Queensland Senior Schooling System

A new senior assessment and tertiary entrance systems are being introduced in Queensland for students entering Year 11 in 2019.

NEWSLETTER 17 2018

15GRACE COLLEGE CABOOLTURE

The QCAA will determine the external exam schedule so

that all students in the State studying a particular subject will

complete their external exam for that subject on the same day.

SUBJECT TYPES IN YEARS 11-12

All students must study an English and a Mathematics subject

as part of their Core subject choices. There is a choice of

General and Applied subjects in each area to allow for

different levels of ability. The new system also allows for

Elective subjects, which consist of General subjects, Applied

subjects, VET Certificate Courses and possibly a University

subject.

A General subject is a course of study based on a syllabus

that has been issued by the QCAA and involves an external

exam written and marked by the QCAA. Internal assessment

of student achievement will also be heavily moderated by

the QCAA. Results from General subjects will count in the

calculation of a student’s final school-based mark, as well as

their ATAR.

An Applied subject is a course of study based on a syllabus

that has been issued by the QCAA but does not have an

external exam. These subjects will be suitable particularly for

students who may be exploring pathways after high school that

do not involve University study. Results from Applied subjects

can count in the calculation of the ATAR.

A student can do a combination of General and Applied

subjects, but it is important to be aware that an ‘A’ grade is an

Applied subject will not be worth as much as an ‘A’ grade in

a General subject. This should be taken into consideration if

students are planning on applying for competitive courses at

University where a high ATAR is necessary.

AUSTRALIAN TERTIARY ADMISSION RANK (ATAR)

QTAC will be responsible for calculating student ATARs,

which will be replacing the OP system for entry into university

study. This includes the weighting of all General and Applied

subjects. This information is not made available to schools

until after the cohort has finished Year 12 and the ATAR scores

have been calculated.

QTAC will calculate ATARs based on either: (1) A student’s

best five General subject results, or (2) A student’s best results

in a combination of four General subjects and one Applied

learning subject. Eligible Applied learning subjects are a

QCAA Applied subject, or Certificate III, or Certificate IV, or

Diploma, or Advanced diploma. If a student is eligible for an

ATAR in both categories, QTAC will use their highest ATAR.

In the new system of tertiary entrance, eligibility for an ATAR

will require satisfactory completion of a QCAA English subject.

This means, students are required to attain a result that is

equivalent to a Pass or ‘C’ in one of four subjects - English,

Essential English, Literature, English and Literature Extension.

While students must meet this standard to be eligible to

receive an ATAR, it won’t be mandatory for a student’s English

result to be included in the calculation of their ATAR.

More information is available at https://www.qtac.edu.au/

SENIOR LEARNING PATHWAYS

In Year 11 and 12, students will have two broad pathways

available to them:

(1) University Entry Pathway: Students who wish to study at

University to acquire degree level qualifications are advised

to select subjects that make them eligible for an ATAR at the

end of Year 12. The recommended study plan would be a

minimum of five General subjects, with the sixth subject being

either a General subject, an Applied subject, or a Certificate

Course.

(2) Work Readiness and Further Training Pathway: Students

who are seeking to move to work or an apprenticeship

and further training (through TAFE or other providers) after

senior school, are advised to select subjects and courses

with embedded skills to prepare for this pathway. The

recommended study plan would be any combination of

Applied, Certificate and General subjects to the equivalent of

six subjects. The pathway may also include a School Based

Apprenticeship or Traineeship.

In either pathway, students are required to study Religion and

Ethics, an English and Mathematics subject, along with four

other subjects according to one of the above patterns of study.

Grace College is well prepared for these changes moving

into 2019 and provides extensive support to students when

deciding on what path of study will best match their learning

and career goals.
