    Holy Week Service

Our pupils led us today in a powerful, movingservice Born for this, depicting the passion and

death of our saviour, Jesus. This was an

adaptation of the service which they performed to huge

acclaim at the Cathedral of St Peter and Paul earlier this

month. Father Tom led us in prayer and reminded us of

the importance of Holy Week and Easter in our liturgical

calendar. Ms Hughes encouraged all pupils to attend

services in their local parish to celebrate Holy Week

fully. Please contact your local parish priest for further

information. May we take this opportunity to wish you

all a very happy and a Holy Easter.

National Science week at St. Bedes

The Science Faculty are still recovering from our busiest

ever Science week, which ended on 17th

    March. Our

recent assemblies have been themed around the atom,

which features on this newsletter as our Science

Specialism logo - and all pupils should now know a bit

more about Democritus and his sword. Our lunchtime

lab sessions were well attended with pupils building fiery

bridges and rockets amongst other activities. On

Thursday and Friday we welcomed around 250 year 4

and 6 pupils from our link primary schools. The pupilsspent the day in workshops learning about forces, space

and the future of the universe. Each group put together

a rocket building kit to take back and use with classes in

    their own school.

We have held science specialist status for nine years

now and these events help us to develop the curiosity

and fascination of Science which continues to lead to

exceptionally high proportion of St Bedes pupils

continue with science studies post-16 level.

Eco newsThe Eco Club has been busy planting bulbs in

the Eco area. An arrangement of flowers

such as Californian Bluebells, Anemones, Freesias and

Dahlia were planted by year 7 & 8 students last Friday

lunch time. "We are all looking forward to seeing the

    flowers start to bloom!"

    FLAME- National Youth

    Congress

    The Flame Congress took place

on Saturday 24th March 2012 at

Wembley Arena. It was a great opportunity for young

people to see how sport and faith meet; how values

such as teamwork, self- discipline, self-sacrifice,

courage and endurance are all deeply rooted in faith.

18 pupils together with Miss Williams and Mrs Seymour

travelled to Wembley Arena to meet 8,500 other young

Catholics from all over Great Britain. This event tied

together the Popes visit to the UK in September 2010

and the London 2012 Olympics. It was an amazing day

that celebrated our faith, taught us more about God

and enabled us to hear some powerful messages from

Olympians and Para-Olympians such as Jason Gardiner,

Debbie Flood and Stef Reid. The testimonies given by

these sports people "taught me about believing in theimpossible and reaching for your goals no matter how

hard the obstacles on the way are."

Some other thoughts we took away from the day were

that "sport can help keep children off the streets and

give them hope and something to live for, something

which touched me because I take things like that for

granted." The day taught us a lot about our faith and

God, "God would not have made us if we were rubbish,

we are all valuable to God and equal to one another."

The day was packed full of speakers, music, drama and

testimonies and we have all takenawaysomethingfrom the day which opened our eyes and made us

    think.

share and how we need to protect it. Not just for an

hour a year, but every day.We have encouraged our school community to take part,

    Community Sport

The St Bede's Community Sports team recently

teamed up with the Gloucestershire FA to donate

sports kit to the Bank Leaze Primary School Uganda

exchange. The exchange saw 2 Bank Leaze members

of staff travel to Uganda recently with a supply of

sports kit to hand out to a local school. The picture

    shows the children all kitted

out in their new kit and then

just about to kick off in a

    match.

    Enrichment Week 10th

    13th

    July 2012

Much of the arrangements for the Enrichment Week

are now in place. As ever, when we offer such a varied

programme of activities and trips, there is a cost

involved. This year, recognising that many families

may be feeling the effects of the credit crunch, we are

heavily subsidising the cost, to hold it at 16.

Enrichment week is a time when the formal

curriculum is suspended and year 7, 8 and 9 pupils

participate in a variety of experiences, developing

knowledge and skills to support children in future

learning. Full details will be given later in the year. If

there are hardship issues in any family, please contact

    Mrs White, in confidence.

    E-SAFETY TIP

Be aware that most mobile phones now on sale in shops

give access to the internet. If you do not allow your child

a computer in their bedroom it may be worth

considering asking for mobile phones to be leftdownstairs at night time.

    Senior Basketball

Well done to the Senior Boys Basketball who came runners

up in the Bristol Schools Championship. The team battled

excellently through a tough semi-final against St

points. The team had to play their

final straight after that game and

were unlucky to lose it in the last

quarter of the play. The team just

ran out of energy and ended uplosing 44 - 36.
