Year 7 have raised a fantastic 638.71

competition between tutor groups was
immense, helping them set a new record for
the amount raised for this event. All proceeds will be
going to Sightsavers charity.
The two top selling tutor groups were 7BVR and 7PGM.
Sightsavers is also the charity that Mrs Garrett and MrsOHagan are supporting when they run the London
Marathon next year.

ADVENT AND CHRISTMAS SERVICE
Our Advent and Christmas service took place
yesterday evening. The pupils presented a
wonderful evening of readings, music and
prayer. The service, which was attended by
hundreds of families, was a joyous occasion for us all. Our
choir sang a new hymn for us called When we see thelittle one arranged by Mr Lewis, which was beautiful.
The collection at the end raised 150, which will be
divided between Julian Trust and Sister Marthas work in
Addo, South Africa.
BIRMINGHAM CLOTHES SHOW LIVE 2011
On Wednesday 7th December, 21 year 10 textiles
students accompanied Mrs McCauley and Mrs Cannon to
the Clothes Show Live. It was an amazing experience. We
watched a catwalk show which was very upbeat and
lively. We were even able to rub shoulders with a couple
of celebrities, Lucien Laviscount and George Lamb, who
did a fabulous job of presenting the spectacle. At the end
of the show each pupil had the opportunity to look at the
many stalls from make-up, hair and beauty to clothing
and accessories to gain first-hand experience on how
companies use fashion and models to merchandise their
products. We were also able to see a number of stalls setup by universities from all over the country with beautiful
examples of Textiles, offering pupils an idea of what
higher education courses are available as well as knitting
and craft workshops. I think the textiles pupils will agree
that the whole experience was truly excellent and
inspirational.

READ INTERNATIONAL
On Wednesday 7th
December the
library was pleased to be able to
donate over 400 books to Read
International. This university run project collects, sorts
and sends donated text books to East Africa, which
improves access to education for hundreds of
thousands of children. Rather than store technicallyout of date text books or send them to landfill, St
Bedes supports this charity which sends books to
where they are needed. Read International is also
supporting the renovation of dozens of school libraries
in Tanzania and Uganda, so that access to books is also
improved. Mrs Pickup, Librarian
CLOTHES FOR A CAUSE
Next term we will once again be collecting good quality
second hand clothes, shoes, belts and handbags. You
can now also send in old books but they must be in a
different bag than the other items. You may remember
that we did the same project last year. All of the items
are sent abroad to those who really need our help. In
return, the company pays per kilo of items donated
which we then pass on to our local charities. We
managed to raise nearly 100 last year! Please begin
saving your items over Christmas it is a good excuse
to replace your dated wardrobe in the sales! Clothes
can be brought in to college during the first two weeks
after Christmas (3rd -13th January 2012) so please don'tthrow anything away over Christmas, send it into
college.
Thank you for your support, Mr Johnson.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to one of our sixth form pupils, Mary
Jo Wallace, our first sixth former to be offered a
university place. We may well see Mary Jo studying
bio-chemistry in London at Kings College next year.
SPORT RESULTS
A busy week in Rugby ended with St Bedes winning three
Bristol Schools Finals at Old Reds Rugby club last Friday.
All three teams had to battle through the semi-finals on
Tuesday and Wednesday. Year 7s narrowly beat
Bedminster Down, Year 8s also beat Bedminster Down
and Year 11s beat City Academy.
At the finals, playing first,
the Year 8s woncomfortably 31-0 against
St Bernadettes.
The Year 7s left it late but beat
Redland Green 28-26.
The Year 11s caused
the most nerves buteventually came out on
top, winning 15-14 also
against Redland Green.
Well done to all players. An amazing achievement!
Bristol Schools Netball Semi and Finals Afternoon 2011
On Friday 9th
December 2011, two teams
went to Brislington School to play in the
Bristol Schools Netball Finals. The Year 9
team made it through to the semi-finals bywinning their group stage. They then went
on to beat City Academy in the semi-final 18-5. The team
again faced Redland Green in the final for the third year
in a row. The game in the league had been a draw, so all
was to play for. The girls made a fantastic start, being 7-1
up at the end of the first quarter. The game continued in
the same manner with the team putting their heart and
soul into the game. At the final whistle, St Bedes had
won the game 14-3. This is the third year in a row the
girls have won this title and the third year in a row they
have beaten Redland Green.Well done to everyone!
Year 7 girls 5-a-side football regional runners up
The Year 7 girls had their first experience of
5-a-side football last Thursday at Patchway
School. Having won their group, they went
on to beat Abbey Wood and then to face
Castle School, for the second time of the
night, in the final. With some great goals they were
crowned champions of the Regional Group. Well donegirls. This meant a trip to The Grange for the regional
finals where, with some excellent goals, tackles and
saves, they came second.

Year 7 Netball Bristol runners up
Having been undefeated in the group
stages, they were to face St Bernadettes
in the semi-final. After a closely fought
game, they came out on top. This meant
facing Redland Green again in the final.
With some good netball, they lost 13-7
but should be proud of their first netball season at StBedes. Well done.
THE ENGLISH FACULTY ARE PROUD TO ANNOUNCE
THE SB
Pupils now have the opportunity to write articles,
stories and poetry for the whole school to see. It is
called The SB (Student Blog). The SB can be found in
the English room on Fronter VLE. It is a forum where
St Bede's pupils write about a particular theme, this
month the theme is "Christmas writing". We areencouraging as many pupils as possible to contribute
to the forum with their own creative or journalistic
writing. This work will then be edited by a team of
Year 10 pupils. This is a great chance to write for a real
audience. Log on, get writing and show us how
fantastic your writing skills can be.
SHANTY TOWNS
Year 8 pupils have had fun
this week simulating the
experiences of new arrivals
in cities in poorer countries,
as they have had to build a
home in a shanty town. Working with few materials
and gathering what else they could from the local
rubbish tip they constructed their dwelling whilst
running the risk of being sent to prison if they were
caught stealing from another persons plot of land.

FAMILY HAMPERS
Ten St Bedes families are enjoying the treats they
have won following this years prize draw. Best wishes
to all recipients.
BRAINTEASER
JULIAN TRUST HAMPERS
On Tuesday afternoon, we took the hampers collected by
Years 10, 11, 12 & 13 to the Julian Trust. One
representative from each tutor group went to the shelter
and we had the opportunity to look at the kitchens and
the dormitories while we were there. Some of the pupils
thoughts:
The trip to Julian Trust opened our eyes to how
fortunate we are and how much we take for granted. It
made us realise that the simple things we take advantage
of such as a roof over our heads, are luxuries for the
people we helped.
We were made aware that the council do not allow the
shelter to be opened seven days a week as it would then
be counted as accommodation, which was shocking to
discover. Overall it was an enlightening experience.

E-SAFETY TIP
It is recommended that you are a Facebook friend with
your child whilst they are still of school age, if they know
you are watching they are more likely to behave sensibly
online. You should check that their Facebook friends are
all children with whom they are actually friends in real
life. Ensure they remove any acquaintances or people
they have never actually met. If another child is not
communicating in a respectful manner with your own
child, then ask your child to remove them as a Facebookfriend. Also, ensure that they are not sharing photos,
videos or information that is inappropriate or that could
cause embarrassment to their family members or to
themselves in future.

A tree-cutter has been asked to collect
all nine trees, but only by walking in
FOUR straight lines.
Use a pencil to trace the tree-cutter'sroute. You need to join all the trees
with four straight lines without lifting
your pencil. Your lines must pass
through each tree once.
