ALL FIRED UP FOR SCIENCE EVENT
On Friday 4th
November we
welcomed 140 year six pupils from
ten of our partner primary schools to
a chemistry workshop entitled How
Stuff Burns. Although the execution
of Guy Fawkes is not an anniversary
that Catholics celebrate, as Scientists
we need to understand how the
270 million worth of fireworks that we see
exploding above our heads actually work. In
addition explosives play a huge role in society,
supporting our way of life by providing the
industries that we rely on with the raw
materials they need.
The day started with a demonstration of how
not to tackle a chip pan fire; we then
experimented with a variety of increasingly
explosive fuels and chemical mixtures. Pupils
carried out experiments to investigate which
metals react fastest with oxygen, how to
speed up the rate of burning and how to
obtain different coloured flames. They then
used their findings to make their ownsparklers.
WEAR IT PINK
On Friday 21st October 2011 the whole school
took part in a wear it pink day to raise money
for breast cancer research. There were many
fantastic outfits that accessorised school
uniform in pink from head to toe! The day was a
great success and enjoyed by both staff and
pupils. We managed to raise 606.73! Well
done and thank you for all your support!

ACADEMY UPDATE
St. Bede's become an Independent Academy
on 1st November 2011.
As previously advised, there is no change to
our name. Academy status for us means
business as usual, doing our very best for
every child entrusted to our care.
MOVEMBER
Staff (Male) at St Bede's are busy grooming
and shaping their facial hair again for the
month of 'Movember'. This ever increasingly
famous charity aims to raise funds and
awareness for prostate and testicular cancers.
Participants start the month clean-shaven and
are then sponsored to grow 'crazy'
moustaches. Mr Slocombe is 'judging' our own
winners at the end of the month. Find outmore atwww.uk.movember.com

successful International

alternative to A levels. It is recognised by
British Universities and internationally as a
route to Higher Education.
It is ideal if you want to continue to study a
wide variety of subjects, if you can't decide
which A levels to take, or if you think you will
enjoy the international context of the course.
This course is being offered at St Bedes in
collaboration with St Brendans Sixth Form
College.
For more information about this exciting
opportunity to continue your studies at St
Bedes please see Mr Strange, Head of Sixth
