    OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD

Tutor groups in year 7, 8 and 9 have this week been

given the challenge to put together as many

shoeboxes as possible, filled with gifts and toys for

children in the world who won't be receiving any

presents this Christmas. Operation Christmas Child

seeks to bring a small amount of happiness to

thousands of children all over the world, and a simple

thing such as a shoebox filled with toys, gifts and

toothbrushes can make a world of difference to

children who would otherwise have nothing. Please

support our shoebox appeal and bring in items that

will contribute towards a box. If you are not in year 7,

8 or 9 but would still like to put a box together, then

please speak to Lay Chaplain, Sarah Seymour or Miss

Williams who can give you more information! Thank

    you so much!

    BATTLEFIELDS TRIP 2011

    At 5.00am on Thursday 13th

October, 40 excited pupils and 4

staff set off on their tour of the

    First World War Battlefield sites.

Our first stop was the fascinatingMemorial Museum of

    Passchendaele, where we

    investigated the three battles of

    Ypres and explored the replica

bunker systems. In the evening we

    were privileged to attend the

    moving Menin Gate ceremony that

takes place every day at 8.00pm.

Day two started early as we set off

to explore the Somme area. We

visited the site where theAccrington Pals went into battle on

    1st

July 1916 and many died within

the first hour. At Thiepval we held our own ceremony

and laid a wreath in memory of those who sacrificed

their lives in the First World War. At Vimy Ridge we

experienced the underground tunnels where soldiers

wanted to make their assault on the ridge in April

1917. The peaceful tranquillity of Tyne Cot cemetery

was a contrast to the sober darkness of the German

    cemetery at Langemark.

Other highlights included a visit to the BelgiumChocolate shop and Josh Howe winning the pool

    tournament!
