KURUNJANG PRIMARY SCHOOL ~ “Learning Together” NEWSLETTER 13 - 2018 Thursday 10 th May 2018 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT On Tuesday Year 6 students received information regarding the AVID elective program at Kurunjang Secondary School in 2019 and some of our parents took up the opportunity to hear about the program at the secondary school on Tuesday night. Assistant Principal David Veale emailed me an hour after school finished and 2 hours before the info evening, saying that he had received his first on line application for the AVID elective! As has been discussed previously, AVID (Achievement Via Individual Determination) strategies are implemented with all year levels at Kurunjang Secondary School and have been introduced to F- 6 at Kurunjang PS, with the purpose of increasing student success. The Secondary school also offers AVID as an elective program. If you are interested in your year 6 child being considered for the elective please complete the on line application as per the instructions in the AVID booklet, as soon as possible. Please speak with Toni Havers (AVID team leader), Krystyna Edwards (5/6 Team Leader), and the other 5/6 teachers, Craig Price, Roisin McGettigan, Stephanie Gilmour and Sharon Cody for further information regarding AVID. Speaking of AVID, I remind everyone that Kurunjang Primary School was one of seven Australian schools invited to participate in the AVID Primary Maths project to 2020, funded by the Sidney Myer foundation and AVID Australia. Our commitment will align with the work we have commenced with the AVID WICOR strategies and the Department of Education numeracy initiative. Funding will subsidise the writing of an AVID maths curriculum and development of resources. The writing team comprises 2 maths and science consultants from the United States and 3 Australian teachers - from WA, NSW and from Victoria, our Leading Teacher for Teaching and Learning Kim Mitchell. Kim spent this week in intensive curriculum writing at the Melbourne City campus of Victoria University. We congratulate her for her passion and achievement for improving student outcomes. I have mentioned at both the F-2 and 3-6 assemblies in the last fortnight, about the number of items of clothing, some of which are non-uniform, but all unnamed, in the lost property cupboard. Please ensure your child/ren’s articles of clothing are all clearly and permanently labelled. Please access lost property if you are looking for an item of missing clothing. If you know that you have lost an item of a certain size but it was not named, please check the cupboard for an identical/unnamed item and take home. We thank the members of the PFA for their planning and preparation of the annual Mother’s Day stall. To all mothers, and all significant females in the life of a child, we wish you a very happy day on Sunday. ~ Learning Together FORWARD PLANNING Friday 11 th May Year 6-7 Application Forms ~ Due Back Mother’s Day Stall Monday 14 th May Mothers Day Afternoon ~ Foundation-Year 1/2 Monday 21 st & Tuesday 22 nd May Teeth on Wheels visit Thursday 24 th May Education Week Open Afternoon ~ 2.10pm 3.10pm Monday 11 th June Public Holiday ~ Queens Birthday Monday 25 th June Curriculum Day ~ No Students at School STUDENT OF THE WEEK AWARDS Student of the week awards are made each week and announced in the newsletter on a Thursday. CELEBRATION OF LEARNING

In 5/6 Krystyna the students have been continually working on classroom expectations and routines and dealing with changes that may occur. Within the classroom, we have strong routines, where the students understand the structure of different lessons and what their expectations are of themselves and the teachers. Sometimes there are times where the normal school day may not quite go according to plan, such as when events like Alpha Show happens. To help with adjusting to the changes, students participate in a morning briefing during circle time. Students have responded well to morning briefing, where we go through the day and discuss anything that may be different for the day, for whatever the reason might be.
