NAPLAN
In 2008, the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy
(NAPLAN) commenced in Australian schools. Every year, all students in
Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 are assessed on the same days using national tests in
Reading, Writing, Language Conventions (Spelling, Grammar and
Punctuation) and Numeracy. All students in Year 7 and 9 will be
participating in the NAPLAN testing this week.
NAPLAN testing this year will be held today, tomorrow and Thursday, 14th
May. All students are to have calculators for the Maths test and parents
should ask their student if they have one and if not could they please buy
one as soon as possible.
We will issue your child’s NAPLAN report later in the year. The same
report format is used for every student in Australia. NAPLAN tests are not
pass/fail tests. At the classroom level it is one of a number of important
tools used by teachers to measure student progress.
Whilst teachers are continually monitoring the progress of students, the
NAPLAN results provide important milestones to ensure that we are
making the progress that we want. Our teaching program through the year
is focused on improving student performance, but our Literacy and
Numeracy teacher teams have also been doing some work in class over
recent weeks making sure our students are well prepared to do their best
in the NAPLAN.

YEAR 12 ART EXCURSION TO THE GALLERY
On Thursday, 5th May the Year 12 Art class visited the Geelong Gallery
during their class time.
The purpose of our visit was to look carefully at the work of Frederick
McCubbin and Juan Davila. We are studying A Bush Burial an artwork
originally created by McCubbin, which Davila referenced in his own versions
of the work. These artworks are significant, large imposing works, two of
which are currently hanging side by side in the gallery. It is well worth a visit
to the gallery to look at these and the variety of other works on display. The
biannual print prize exhibition opens at the end of next week. It is free to
visit the Geelong gallery so I encourage interested student, family and friends
to go and take a look at the changing works. It is very unusual to see these
works hanging side by side.
The student explored ideas themes and media in the artworks, many
commenting on the difference between looking at an actual artwork and a
reproduction of the image.
The Year 12 Art students have also been working very hard on their practical
artwork to produce what is called ‘A body of work’. This is assessed as a SAT
School Assessed Task at the end of unit 4. Included with this article are some
artworks created last year by Stephanie, Simone and Austria.

Years 7 & 8 ASPIRE classes at Deakin Waterfront
Students continued their familiarization of the university by completing scavenger hunts and tours of this campus.
Year 7 teams of students were asked to approach various departments within the university campus and introduce themselves before requesting answers to questions (this was pre-arranged by our PST team). Year 8 students attended a structured tour of the campus .
I would like to note the terrific manners displayed by students when alighting the bus and their very positive attitudes to their experiences.
We are looking forward to a visit from Pixel the Robot next week.
Best regards,
Anna Darcey

Group 73 East Geelong Prep., Grades 1 /2 Performances Congratulations to Group 73 for their great work in
performing for a third local primary school – this time at East
Geelong Primary School on Monday, 27th April 2015. They
performed for an audience of nearly 150 students.
After organising who would take which parts (25% of Group
73 were absent) while walking up to the East Primary – the
excited ex-East Primary students in Group 73, were really
looking forward to this particular show. Special thanks and
congratulations go to Tim, Brock and Lachlan who all took on
major acting roles in other shows due to absentees. Great
work boys!!! But that goes for all as Ms Underwood explained
in her email that it was a “really positive experience all round.”
The East students and their teachers enjoyed the shows plus
the way Group 73 adapted/’twisted’ the fairy-tales.
Again a highlight was the dancing at the end of the play “Eventually Queen”, after the proposal, marriage and celebration at
the wedding – the preps., most of Grade One and many of Grade Twos danced away at the wedding party. So after “The
Elephant and the 3 Llamas”, Mr Kellett’s big thrill came at the end, when the Preps., especially Mrs Russell’s, ‘belted out’
the Geelong Footy Club song to him. Wow – thank you Mrs Russell and her students (EXCEPTIONAL considering how
many words they had to remember, especially for preps.)

Bellarine Division Athletics Carnival
On Thursday, 30th April a large school team went to the Bellarine interschool athletics carnival. In near perfect competing condition the students tried hard all day competing and gaining places in many events. It was great to see so many students keen to get involved and to do their school and mates proud. We had a number of outstanding results on the day with many students placing to take home a ribbon. The first place getters go onto the next round in Melbourne to be held later in the year. Well done to the following students who came first: Mystique W (Discus) Alex B (3000m) Emily T (Shot Put) Pel R (Triple jump, 800m and Long Jump) Lachlan C (100m, Javelin and 200m) Jonty J (High Jump) Alexandra C (High Jump) Shania R (1500m walk) Bailee J (Javelin)
