2016 has been a busy year for the Old King’s Club and its many constituent parts. Major social events like the Duel Dinner at the Savile Club, drinks at the Oriental Club and of course the Annual Dinner at the school have drawn together the keen supporters of the club’s various sporting activities and – even more pleasingly - members of all ages who have not connected with the King’s community since leaving school.

It is good to see King’s College School’s shield gracing the stairwell of the East India, Devonshire, Sports and Public Schools’ Club at long last (see cover and page 14).

Work is nearly complete on transforming the Club into a company limited by guarantee to achieve a more modern structure and limit our exposure to risk. We are most grateful to David Tilles (OK 1971 & Vice-President) and Travers Smith LLP for their pro bono work.

2016 ANNUAL DINNERThe Annual Dinner was held in the Great Hall at the School and was well attended by OKs from 1946 to 2016. The Head Master proposed the toast to the Old King’s Club, Margaret Hunnibal was the guest speak-er and our President Micky King proposed the toast to King’s College School.

A f ine meal was prepared by Chris Hull’s team and music was played by the John Burnett-Hall jazz ensemble. Many thanks to Heidi Lissamore and the Dinner Committee for their hard work and to the School for their sponsorship. The f loral table centrepieces were donated to Arthur House, a residential care home in Wimbledon, with whom the King’s College School Lodge is developing a supporting role.

SINGAPORE DINNEROn Friday 10 June 2016, a dinner was held for Old Boys currently resid-ing in Singapore. The event was attended by seven OKs and there was a range of leavers from 1990 to 2005. The evening provided a great opportunity to reminisce about the good old days in SW19. It is hoped that events such as this can be held more often in the future.

SPORTS DAYThe f irst annual Old King’s Club Sports Day, the successor to Commem-oration Day, was held at the School to coincide with the annual OKC v. School cricket match. OKs enjoyed a fun and action-packed afternoon, which featured 5-a-side football, fencing, family swimming, a picnic and tea at the cricket pavilion.

The Old King’s Club beat the School’s 1st XI by 4 runs in a terrif ic Twen-ty20 Cricket match. Barney Oates (OK 2012) was 30 not out 2 for 16, Alex Hughes (OK 2016) 19 not out & 1 for 11, Jake Hennessey (KCS 1st XI) 64. The f inal score was OKC 160 for 5 against KCS’s 156 for 9.

The second annual Sports Day will be held on 25 June 2017, when even more activities will be added to the programme.oldkingsclub.org.uk/sportsday

FOOTBALLThe Old King’s Football Club has continued its remarkable success story with a strong star t to the 2016/2017 season.

On the pitch, the 1st XI has enjoyed a solid star t to the season with victories over Old Etonians (4- 0), Old Harrovians (2- 0) and Old Brent-woodians (3- 2), balancing out narrow defeats to Old Carthusians (1- 3) and Old Forresters (1- 2), traditionally the league’s two strongest sides. With players returning from injury and two cup runs about to begin in the AFA Senior Cup and the historic Arthur Dunn Cup, the early signs bode well for the Club’s flagship team and its new captain, Alex Angel (OK 2010), who has taken over the reins this year from Nick Perry (OK 2003).

Following their championship- winning season in 2015/16, the 2nd XI have embarked on their first ever term in Division 2 of the Arthurian League - the highest possible level for a 2nd XI within the Arthurian League structure. Even at this early stage of the season, the side have certainly seen some tough tests but learned from harsh defeats to West-minster and Lancing to secure a brave 4- 3 win over Haileybury (where we came from 2 goals down) and a draw that could so easily have been a win against Eton. With this momentum, the Club’s second side are optimistic of pushing for a top- half finish in the division.

After last year’s introduction in the cup competitions, the newly formed 3rd XI have made their league debut in Division 5 South. Under the stewardship of Jack Smith (OK 2005) and Felix Parrack (OK 2010), there have been some positive early signs with a strong win away to Old Harrovians 3rd XI and an excellent draw against Old Amplefordians 1st XI. With a raft of new, young players there is a fantastic sense of opti-mism surrounding the 3rd XI and their maiden journey in the ArthurianLeague.

Off the pitch, the club continues to benefit from the fantastic support shown by the Old King’s Club. The 1st XI are playing in a brand new kit featuring the Old King’s Club logo. Membership has increased once again with record attendance at Monday night training (nearly 30 OK’s attending) and with 3 teams up and running we are regularly seeing over

CRICKETThe third annual Old King’s Club cricket day organised for former staff and King’s cricketers of the 1960s took place at Lord’s on 27 June. 36 attendees enjoyed the facilities of two adjoining boxes for the second day of the Middlesex versus Lancashire championship match. The cricket seemed to be of less importance than the opportunity to renew old acquaintances and to reminisce. As previously the occasion was superbly organised by David Holland. A similar event for next June 2017, possibly at the Oval, was discussed.

HOCKEYThe OK side faced the school team in the annual hockey match. Mem-bers of the Old King’s Club Poppy Hawkes, Sally Clifford, Clem Pol-lard and Olivia Jones (OK 2016) were all present. They were joined by Victoria Williams and Hannah Blackman-Mack (OK 2015) as well Anna Westcott, vice captain of school (OK 2014). The Old King’s Club side played well but were defeated 3-0. We have been for tunate that Margaret Hunnibal has donated a cup for the Old King’s Club vs School annual hockey match.

RIFLE CLUBThe Rif le Club has continued to grow in membership, organically by members introducing guests who then migrate on to full membership and by aler ting OKs to our presence on the OKC website.

2016 has had another packed f ixtures list with the Public Schools Veter-ans (PSV) Ashburton match after the Schools event in July. The Schools events are heavily dominated by Epsom and Wellington Colleges; we would be pleased to encourage and assist the School to venture back into the competition after such a long break from mainstream shooting competitions.

Aside from the main Target and Gallery rif le competitions club members are star ting to venture out into the mainstream Imperial meeting along with historic service and modern rif le competitions. The recent Historic Service Rif le competition was held at Bisley on Oct 1 and three of our members took part and acquitted themselves well.

We are always pleased to hear from both OKs, their families and others who may wish to come along to a guest day. Full details at: www.oldkingsclub.org.uk

RUGBYThe 2015-16 Season was extremely busy with competitive Rugby played at all levels from Senior 1XV, U21s and down to U15s.

The 1XV are playing in London SW2 division and star ted the season in f ine style with a 27-21 win against London Cornish, followed by back to back victories over Basingstoke and Old Reigatian. The team f inished the season in 6th place with 53 points, one place below their previous campaign and 6 points adrift of their tally twelve months ago. The 2016-17 season has star ted in f ine style with 4 wins out of 5.

The 2XV competed in the top Surrey reserve league for the 4th season in succession and f inished in 8th position although still with a positive points difference of +15. A strong star t to the 2016-17 campaign has resulted in the Club f ielding a 3rd XV for the f irst time in over 10 years!

King’s U21’s were the winners of the Surrey Shield beating Old Cater-hamians at home 36-21. The U17 side is a collaboration with Rosslyn Park and are the National U17 Bowl Winners, beating Durham RFC in the Final. The U15A side are Champions of Surrey U15 Division 1 and were unbeaten through the season.

ROWINGOn 11th November, 1884 BC competed at the Fullers Head of the River Fours. A coxless 4 containing both current students and recent gradu-ates boated from Putney in cold and drizzly conditions. With a young and fresh crew of current King’s boys star ting just behind, the pressure was on from the star t. There was little to choose between the crews un-til Barnes Bridge, at which point the schoolboys began to make inroads. They just nosed in front approaching Chiswock eyot, but 1884 moved back in front with a sustained effort along the island. Unfortunately, the f itter and better drilled schoolboys retook the lead before Hammer-smith Bridge and continued to move away through challenging condi-tions on the f inal stretch. The tussle with the schoolboys was thoroughly enjoyable, despite Alex Duncomb (OK 2013) losing bragging rights to his brother who is currently in the Lower Sixth! 1884 eventually f inished 218th out of 418 star ters, moving up 81 places from 2014, the last time a crew was entered.

Ollie Hines (2013) competed in the U23 Men’s Pair at the World Rowing Championships in Rotterdam over the summer.

It is also noteworthy that Patrick Duggan, the current KCS Director of Rowing, coached the GB Junior Men’s Eight that won a bronze medal.

We look forward to resuming our rivalry with the schoolboys at the annual Festive Races on Sunday 11th December, where we will be de-fending the Reed-Boswell Cup. Please do get in contact if you would like to take part.

GOLF2016 was another very good year for the Golf Society. The year star ted with the Triangular Match against Kingston Grammar School and Raynes Park OB’s in April at Wimbledon Park GC. With only seven players against the f ifteen KGS players we were hard pressed to win and were beaten into second place. The individual scores were very close with the best stableford score being 32 points by Roy Haslehurst of KGS, who won the Martin f ielding cup. Both Lance Condon and I managed a very respectable 31 points closely followed by Neil Lovett with 29. The Spring Meeting was played at Malden GC in May. The Bill Cox Cup for the best Stableford score was won by David Cross with 38 points closely followed by Ian Hay and I with 35 points. The blades Scratch Cup was won by Michael Wale with 25 points and Michael Choong was the runner up with 23.

Five friendly matches were played over the summer: we won 4-1 over Old Paulines, 4-0 over Old Whitgiftians, 3-1 over Old Cranleighans and drew 2.5-2.5 against Old Tiff inians, and won 4-1 over Kingston Gram-mar School Old Boys.

The Surrey Schools Golf Societies Festival was due to be played at Clan-don Regis GC at the end of June but due to torrential rain the night before, the event was rescheduled and played at Bletchingley GC at the end of October. Our Richard Burgess returned an exceptional 40 points the next best being 38 by Gary Ayres of the Old Tiff ’s. The team result was a tie by the Old Tiff inians and Kingston Grammar School both with 155 points. On countback the Old Tiff ’s won by 73 to 70. We scored 153 points.

Some of the team – Graham Cox is on the left, holding the two cups which he unfortunately had to pass on to the KGS winners.

The Old King’s won 2-1 over Trent on the 2nd round but lost against Birkenhead on the 3rd round.

The middle Trent College pair had a two-up lead but held on, with pars at the RWNGC 16th and 17th, managing to defeat Elliot and Andrew 2&1. The other two OK pairs gave their opponents a good thrashing, by 7&5. Alex and Peter won six consecutive holes, playing par golf from the par-5 7th hole to the 12th fairway, where their match was conceded, with the opponents lost in deep rough. This gave us a solid 2-1 victory, and a last-16 match against Birkenhead.

Against Birkenhead Peter and Alex were beaten, 4&3, despite birdieing the 15th hole. An OK birdie squared the match, but a tremendous Elliot tee shot to 12 feet at the 190-yard 16th only gained a half. At the 18th hole Andrew put it inside Birkenhead’s second shot, but we did not hole our vital birdie putt; Birkenhead putted up, and then holed the tricky downhill 3-footer for victory.

Birkenhead won the f inal and the Grafton Morrish trophy, beating Up-pingham (who were 2012 winners).

British Airways Club World. Describing himself as “a f ilm-maker who makes commercials”, Myers would vary the style and tone of his f ilms, ranging from broad comedy to solemn portentousness, but they were distinguished by razor-sharp editing and a strong narrative. For his tel-evision work he won accolades from bodies around the world including the British Television Advertising Awards, the American Clios and the Cannes Lions. David travelled the world in the interest of informing the British horticultural industry and he was for many years the voice of the British trade. DR JOSEPH WARREN (OK 1950) After leaving Kings he went straight into the army to do his National Service. He obtained a commission and became a Captain in the Royal Artillery.
