Dear ATGENDER supporters,

Let us first wish you all a happy, healthy and productive 2010!

This newsletter contains important extra information with regards to the Brussels conference

on February 18-19 this year. We have re-attached the previous practical newsletter for your

convenience, and below we provide more detailed information on the hotel.

First, we are happy to present you with a more detailed preliminary conference programme,

which you can find below. It provides information on all the panels and key notes, in

addition to the planned events related to ATHENA3 dissemination, and ATHENA4 and

ATGENDER committees. Also, the agenda of the first ATGENDER General Assembly

(GA) has been finalized; see also below. The other important GA documents (Statutes and

Standing Orders) can be downloaded from our website, where we will also upload regularly

updated versions of the conference programme.

In addition to papers, we warmly welcome poster presentations. A poster room and book

table will be available throughout the duration of the conference. When you are planning on

presenting a poster, please e-mail [email protected]. Also, we provide the possibility to

promote or sell books, and to share other information. For the latter we will arrange an

information table. So, please remember to bring your flyers, publications and presentations

for all the participants to discover and share.

Secondly, as you know, no registration fee for this ATGENDER-conference is required.

However, we expect participants to pay their membership fees before or during the

conference. With regards to the GA, it is important to note that voting can only be done when

membership fees have been paid. Membership fees can be paid (in cash or bank transfer)

before or during the conference. A reminder of the membership fee costs has been pasted

below in this newsletter and can be found on the website. The bank details of ATGENDER

have been pasted below.

If you are thinking of applying for a fee reduction or exemption, please consider what our

Standing Orders say about this:

“2.6 Fee reductions and exemptions

Members’ requests for fee reduction or exemption are evaluated by the Board, which

decides whether fee reduction or exemption is warranted for a particular case. The

request must be made in an official letter from the individual member or from the head

of the institution with an explanation of the inability to pay the regular membership

fee.

Those members granted fee exemptions are awarded one year’s membership in

ATGENDER. These members have the same rights as paying members; corresponding

to the type of member they are (individual or institutional).

Members that have been granted exemption in one year should reapply for this

in the next year in case of remaining inability to pay the membership fee.”

Thirdly, we are happy to announce that the Research School for Interdisciplinary Gender

studies, INTERGENDER, has offered to sponsor this conference with a number of travel

grants for participants who are connected to one of the universities united in

INTERGENDER. If you are affiliated to an INTERGENDER-university please contact the

INTERGENDER director ([email protected] or secretary Berit Starkman:

[email protected]) to find out whether you are eligible. A limited number of 10 WeAVE

student travel grants have also been awarded. Those who were selected will have been

notified about this. Please do not forget to register when you will receive a grant: the grants

are only intended for official participants of this conference.

Fourthly, as you can see in the ATGENDER Statutes and Standing Orders, we foresee the

opportunity for installing committees under the umbrella of ATGENDER. On Thursday

February 18 from 15:30-17 we have arranged a time slot especially for discussing such

initiatives. Newly arranged committees will be asked to present themselves during the GA on

Friday. If you are interested in starting up an ATGENDER committee, you are welcome to

pre-announce your ideas via the ATGENDER website. Announcements should be sent to

[email protected]. During the mentioned time slot, initiatives for ATHENA4 can be

discussed as well.

We are looking forward to an interesting and productive conference!

On behalf of the ATGENDER Board,

Harriet Silius and Iris van der Tuin

Hotel

In the last ATGENDER newsletter we announced that Amazone made a deal with the Hilton

Brussels City Hotel, which is a 10 minutes walk from Amazone. A room for 1 person costs

90,00 EUR per night. If you share a room with a colleague, it’s 100,00 EUR per night. The

prices include breakfast.

If you want to stay in a room for 2 persons, but you don’t have a roommate yet, you are

kindly asked to arrange this on your own in advance. The registration can be made by one

person (of the two persons) only. If you really don’t find a roommate you can send an e-mail

to Inge Van der Stighelen, [email protected] before 18 January. She will

put the names together alphabetically and send out an e-mail to confirm roommates.

Registration and payment has to be done by yourself! Amazone isn’t interfering neither with

financial transactions or reimbursements later on.

You can register from now on and by preference before the 18th of January via this link:

http://www.hilton.com/en/hi/groups/personalized/BRUPMHI_GAMAA/index.jhtml.

It brings you to a personalized website indicating the name of the Conference and the logos

of ATGENDER, Sophia and Amazone. Registration is simple. However in a separate file

you’ll find some practical explication if needed, us kindly offered by the Hilton Brussels City

Hotel. A credit card shall be required in order to guarantee the bookings in case of no-show,

late cancellation or non-payment, but you will only have to settle your invoice upon

departure.

We'd like you to remember that, if you are between 18 and 35 and your budget doesn’t allow

you to stay in the Hilton Hotel, it could be practical to stay in the youth hostel Centre

Vincent Van Gogh (CHAB). It’s just around the corner of Amazone. The rate for a single

room is 33,00 EUR and for a double room 26,00 EUR per night/per person. This includes

breakfast and bed sheets, you have to bring your own towels or rent one for 0,80 EUR. You

can find more information on the site of CHAB (http://www.chab.be/) and you can make

a reservation here (http://www.chab.be/ReserveUK.html).
