SESSION OBJECTIVES By the end of this session, teachers should be able to Describe what effective Catalyst software implementation looks like- 30 minutes Create and manage student groups Access and analyze student data reports Learn how to share annotating with students Access software-provided resources Motivate and engage students 4. THE CATALYST STORY 100% of IDEA students will go to and through college 5. WHAT HAS ALREADY HAPPENED? In 2012, IDEA received a 31 million dollar Race to the Top (RTTT) grant to serve as a national model for education. Catalyst is part of that grant. Last school year, Catalyst was piloted last school year at five IDEA campuses. This experiment helped us learn what worked and what didnt. Catalyst is part of the district Individualized Learning Initiative The Goal is the Same, the Path is Different. 6. CATALYST SHARING STORY Summer 2014- trained grade team leaders- buy in & support-serious on campus Continue consistently all classrooms using Compass only for state tested subjects Training to all staff on Compass in during Staff PD before school started Catalyst 7th grade vs 9th grade ACT diagnostics 7. INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING AT IDEA Shared tools for student success. 8. VISION OF INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING The mission of individualized learning is to build independent lifelong learners by providing transformative student-centered instructional experiences. 9. Individualized Learning Approach In-School High Dosage Tutoring Offers targeted research based small group instruction designed to close gaps in ELA/Math for students at 2+ years below grade level (approximately lowest 20%) Interventionists & Special Education Teachers are Primary teachers Progress Monitoring using Little STAR analyzed every 3 weeks Catalyst Offers intervention/acceleration opportunities for all students Teachers and ILSs are primary facilitators during this time Progress monitoring using Little STAR (Varies by student groups After-School Academic Tutoring Offers after school tutoring opportunities for the bottom 35% Should be additional intervention for students different than what they are receiving during the school day Enrichment Activities Open to all students Piano/ Art/ Music Blended Learning Activities- OST 13. HOW TO MEET OUR STUDENT NEEDS 14. WHAT DOES CATALYST LOOK LIKE? It depends! 15. LOGISTICS BEST PRACTICES Materials Management: COWs and headphones are secure, complete, and well maintained. Processes and Procedures: COW distribution is smooth and efficient. Sign in sheets are up-to date and students use the technology appropriately. Student Groups: Students are grouped based on need (Accelerated, Enrichment, Reinforcement, Remediation/Critical). Remediation/Critical groups are fifteen or fewer students. The most impactful teachers are with the neediest students. Active Monitoring: 100% of students are on-task. Teacher is walking around, answering questions, and encouraging students. 16. SOFTWARE BEST PRACTICES Individualization: Students are working on tasks aligned to their specific needs. Student Self-Advocacy: Students can explain what they are doing and how it will help them. Tracking: Students regularly track their own progress and are able to explain their personal learning goals. Data Driven Instruction: Teacher can explain which skills each student is working on and why. Progress monitoring evident. 17. DIAGNOSTICS Star + Software = Just Right Instruction 18. Be ready to share! 25. CRUSING WITH NEWSELA Sylvia Hinojosa 26. STEP 1. REGISTER FOR NEWSELA The first step is to create your own account. This account allows you to log in to Newsela each day to create classes, assign articles and track your students' progress. To register for Newsela: 1. Visit www.newsela.com (http://www.newsela.com). 2. In the top-left corner of the page, click on the Sign In/Register link. 3. Click on the I'm Faculty/Staff icon. 4. Type your schools zip code 27. STEP 2. CREATE CLASSES AND ADD STUDENTSTo create a class: 1. In the top-left corner of the page, click on your name. The Settings page will appear. 2. Scroll to the Classes section. 3. In the Enter class name here field, type a class name. 4. From the drop-down menu, choose a grade. 5.Newsela will generate a unique class code. 28. CREATING STUDENT GROUPS To add students: 1. Print the Quick Start Guide for Students. 2. In the top-right corner of the guide, write the class code next to Sign-up code. 3. Provide a copy of the guide to each student 29. STEP 3: ASSIGN ARTICLES To assign an article to your class: 1. Open the article that you want to assign. At the top of the page, there are buttons for each of your classes. 2. Click on the button for the class that will be assigned the article. The button turns blue, to show that the class has been assigned to read this article. 30. ASSIGNING ARTICLES 31. MONITORING PROGRESS TEACHERS VIEW 32. STUDENTS VIEW 33. STEP 4. SHOW STUDENTS WHERE TO BEGIN 1. Instruct your students to do the following: 2. In the sign-in bar (black), click on the Binder link. A list will appear, showing all articles assigned for the students classes. 1. Scroll to the Your Work section to view all assignments for all classes. 2. Click on an article. 3. If an article has a companion quiz, remind students to take the quiz after they've read the article. 34. STEP 5. MONITOR STUDENT PROGRESS The binder shows an overview of your students' performance on articles you've assigned. You can view the class average score on a quiz, as well as individual scores for each of your students. The binder also shows which students have annotated an article, reminding you to check out what your students have to say. 35. TO MONITOR STUDENT PROGRESS: In the sign-in bar (black), click on the Binder Your binder will appear, showing student performance data for each class. 2. Scroll to the assignment for which you want to view quiz scores. 3. Click on the name of the class. The class section expands, showing the full class roster, student progress and quiz scores. Click on the student's name to view his or her specific answers on the quiz. Congratulations! You are now set up and ready to use all of the features Newsela has to offer. Happy reading! 36.
