    Presidents Message ___________________________________________Greetings, chapter members!

It is with proud enthusiasm that I announce that HCJ will once again beadopting Hoo Cho Chinese language school for this years Statewide JayceesAdopt-a-School Day ! Last year, we adopted Hoo Cho for the first time and were

able to forge a great relationship with their institution.

We repainted the exterior of the schoolhouse with donated paint from a localbusiness. Members gave up their weekend last October to prepare the area to bepainted, primed the surfaces and repainted the exterior to include the school sign,

uilding and concrete walkway. In doing so, we rehabilitated a schoolhouse that now gleams from the outside andlimmers like a beacon that students can be proud to attend.

This year we plan to do something similar, perhaps re-doing the landscaping or refurbishing the dilapidated desksn the classrooms. We will once again need everyones help to make this as successful as last year. You can help byonating your time, expertise or resources. Adopting a school is easy as 1, 2, 3: 1) Adopt-A-School; 2) Ask how

ou can help; 3) Lend a hand. This isafter allthe same school that Past-President Paul I only speak Chineseuring the 50 th State Fair Chun went to as a young keiki! Do it for Paul and Im sure hell hook you up with freehoyu chicken at next years Fair; that is if Kelfred Im more Pake than Paul Chang doesnt charge you for it.

Kudos to new member Roger The Enron Accountant Lee for co-chairing this project along with VP Allan I doung Fu bettah than You Wu .

Another great project that were currently in the midst of planning is the 57 th Annual Healthy Baby Contest. Wereworking with sponsor Meadow Gold Dairies to find judges and donors for the contest. Contact Chairperson Sarah

Gimme that Microphone Young if you can help this year. Sarah was recently on the KITV morning newsromoting this event as the HCJ representative and will be on the Perry & Price morning show on October 2. Be onhe listen for her!

So there it is folks, we are gearing up for a busy month and there are lots of opportunities to get involved. See you athe projects!Yours in Jaycees,

Ryan Ng59 th President, Developing Tomorrows LeadersToday.

______________Adopt-A-School Day KickOff Rall Stunning Success! That s the only way to describethe AASD KickOff Rally that took pace at Ala MoanaCenter Stage on Saturday, August 28 th. The Rally wasplanned out to not only recognize our generousParticipants & Sponsors, but also raise awareness of the

Statewide project. Both goals were certainly achieved thatday, thanks to the hard work and dedication of our Jaycees.

The event began appropriately with a Lion Dance thatgot the attention of both our attendees and the mallpassersby. It was a hard act to follow, but our MC, JustinCruz of KHON, did so. His able guiding of the ceremonywas an important asset to the day.

The first speakers of the day were our AASD Co-Chairs,Krystal Lee & Patrick Tomiyasu , who both gave excellen

addresses on the importance of our service to localchools. They represented the HCJ Spirit with pride and ability, in the great traditions of this chapter.

The crowd was then treated to the Lt. Governor, Duke Aiona , who read a Proclamation from himselfnd Governor Lingle officially naming October 10 th as Hawaii Adopt-A-School Day ! It was a greatcknowledgement of our efforts and its far-reaching impact.

It wasn t all speaking at the Rally, though. In between we had some of the best entertainment in theslands take the stage. Jordan Segundo once again lent his support and his voice to the Jaycees, wowinghe assembled audience. The resulting reception was topped only by 10 year old Ciana Pelekai who gave

her trademark rendition of At Last . It was clear why she won so many fans on America s Got Talent andwhy she continues to gain new ones.

Our climax came with the calling up of the AASDParticipants to both acknowledge them and presentach with their banners for hanging at the schools. It

was a chance to thank them as well as show our unifiedtrength, aimed at bettering our Hawaii communities.

Though it took awhile, we got through the long list ofgreat organizations, businesses, clubs, sports teams

nd individuals. Once finished they were all actuallyalled back onstage en masse for a big group photo thathould make any and all associated with this project proud.

Our AASD team, from not only HCJ, but many of our other chapters should all take a bow for a job welldone. Now on to the Big Day itself 10/10/10!

Much Mahalo to you all for supporting Adopt-A-School Day!

______________________________ Meet New Member Roger LeeHow did I get into this mess? is the question I ask myself

every waking day. Ive been a part of HCJ since May of thisyear and I now understand the phrase when months feel likeeternity.

Ive spent most of my life engrossed with Japanese culture;however Ive recently had an epiphany to explore my roots byattempting to learn Mandarin, watch more Chinese shows, andexplore historical and cultural topics.

I try to visit China at least once a year for business, but whoam I really trying to kid? I go there for the great food, culture, people, shopping, and scenery.

Ive been at Hawaiian Telcom for about five years. It hasbeen an amazing experience working for a relatively largecorporation, which has essentially been in a start-upenvironment when HT cut-over from Verizon.

I started off implementing systems, performing system audits, developing procedures, etc. In the last two years Ive joined the

nternal Audit team performing more financial, compliance, and process type audits.

Before I forget, theres this magical coffee shop in downtown called For the Love of Coffee . If youve never triet, you must. Ok, so youre not that gullible. Whats the reason? Im the owner of this small shop, which sells coffee, astries, paninis, salads, and breakfast items. I hope that doesnt deter anyone from going now.

I also love animals, and coincidentally, animals love me. I have a fatty Tibetan Spaniel named Tobi; hes lazy and Iuspect hes a little slow, but I still love him very much. Dogs I would like to eventually own are huskies, shiba inus,nd golden retrievers.

In my free time I play basketball, football, golf, yoga, spinning, bodyboard, poker, and well, really just anything. Aassion of mine is coming up with new business ideas and plans. I currently have a few things in the pipeline, which I

wont go into details here, but feel free to ask me. Im always open to talk and develop ideas!

Of course, I was joking about the opener; HCJ has provided me with priceless opportunities and unique experienceshat I would have never had otherwise. Cooking billions of eggs at the 50 th state fair, scooping popcorn at a UH

volleyball game, listening to mentally stimulating political spiels, running around Ward looking for treasures, etc.Earlier, I had mentioned wanting to explore my roots.

In addition to accomplishing that, HCJ is a great vehicle to provide members with chances to learn more aboutourself, network with a variety of characters you would have not otherwise have met, help the community with

measurable projects, and, most importantly, have fun. Thanks to everyone for the ride so far!

Roger is heading up our Adopt-A-School Day project at Hoo Cho School this year. Way to go, Roger!
