    Presidents Message___________________________________________

Greetings, chapter members! One of the great things about the Jaycee organization is its focus on Individua

Development. As one of the important bastions of development, it focuses ondeveloping our members at a personal and individual level so that each member

can realize his/her full potential. By doing so, members become better equippedto handle the challenges of everyday life, and hence, become better contributors our community.

One such program is the Speak-Up/Write-Up competition, recently held at thirst District competitions on April 3rd. Competitors work on their communication skillswritten and oralin aetting conducive to learning and self-actualization. Kudos to Sarah Young and Anthony Sato for participating fohe first time in this worthwhile event. Both competitors placed and will move on to compete at the First Trimester

Convention this month. Good luck to them both!Other members have also been working on their speaking skillsMandarin Chinese that is. In conjunction with

our partnership with Hoo Cho Chinese School, they have offered FREE language classes to HCJ members, usually oSunday afternoons. If you havent learned Chinese before, or a have a small inkling to do so, contact Krystal Lee fmore info.

    ________________________________________________________Convention

The 1st Trimester Convention is important becausoften sets the tone for the coming year. If that is true thenHawaii Jaycees have a great 2010 ahead! This time aroufor instance, we saw the reactivation of the First Tim

program, participated in by HCJers Sarah Young & Allan W

We also had excellent interactive trainings, intecompetitions and a great Awards Dinner that included spea

    Pono Shim from Enterprise Honolulu.

As important and vital as that is, we know youre readthis to find out how your beloved HCJ, and HCJers, did

ets get to it. Sarah Young represented us in both WriteUp & SpeakUp, having placed in both duRegionals a couple of weeks ago.

HCJ has a proud tradition of SpeakUp winners, which include National SpeakUp Champ Yvette Lecurrent Hawaii SpeakUp Winner, President Ryan. Would she be able to follow in their footprints? W

have to wait until Saturday night to find out.

    THE AWARDS DINNER

The Awards Dinner was held this time in the excellent facilities at D & Bs, put together by the excelConvention Team of the COOL Jaycees and Honolulu Filipino Jaycees. As noted, a great highlight of evening was the message from Enterprise Honolulus Pono Shim. He gave an excellent speech on te

our stories, which we all need to do to grow our chapter and the Hawaii Jaycees.

The only way to top that was for your chapter to bestow aSenatorship on a great member of ours. A man you knowby the name of Mr. Lindley Low! We recognized his yearsof service to HCJ not only during his membership, but alsonto his Rooster years.

His unique personality has been one of the trademarksof our chapter these past years, whether we wanted it to beor not.

The evening, as it always does, built up to the climax of the awards the Parade of Chapters results ankings. Your chapter had already done itself proud, winning awards for our projects, our officers and

    competitors.

As you already know from the front page, HCJ did indeed take that coveted #1 spot yet again! And ySarah did take that SpeakUp title for the 1st Trimester. Get the lowdown on all our awards on the npage

______________________________Mandarin Lessons At Hoo ChHCJ is embracing its culture and taking Mandar

lessons with our friends at Hoo Cho School. SundayMarch 28th was the 1st time and it was a great succeOur students learned such useful phrases as:

Im busyHow are you, Mr. Wang?

    That is a Bic pen.

The group did very well, picking up sounds not uin English. It took some effort, but we did ourselvesproud. One of our crowd, Angel Lewis from HFJCCwas especially eager to learn because she works atbank in Chinatown. She plans to use Mandarin in he

    customer service.

This is just the start and we encourage any and all to join us. Its a great way to learn a language that spart of our chapters cultural background. DINING OUT AT SHABU SHABU HOUSE by Ramy So

As part of HCJs monthly International Dining-Out event, our chaptervisits a local eatery to whet our palette with foreign cuisine. For this month,we chose the Japanese cuisine of shabu shabu and there was no better

place to do this than Shabu Shabu House on Kapiolani Blvd.

Shabu-shabu is a Japanese dish of thinly sliced meat and vegetablesboiled quickly in broth and served with various dipping sauces. The termshabu-shabu means swish-swish, referring to the swishing action as you

cook the food in the hot broth. Board member and man of epicurean taste, Patrick Graham, chaired theevent. Partaking in the swishing were Rodney Miyasato, Ryan Ng, Patrick Taw, Ramy So, Allan Wu,Carrie Azama and several guests from the Honolulu Japanese Junior Chamber.

Like many things in the world, shabu-shabu traces its origin back to China. During the cold winters theChinese would cook over a hot pot known as shuan yang rou. It was not until the 20th century that shabu

shabu was introduced in Japan through the first restaurant of its kind, Suehiro Restaurant in Osaka. Thedish became very popular and Suehiro trademarked the name shabu-shabu in 1955. Eventually the cuisspread throughout Japan and then Asia.

After enjoying our delectable shabu-shabu dinner, the HCJers and guests walked out with contented

bellies and smiling faces. We will definitely look forward to broadening our palettes at the next InternatioDining-Out.
