Organisational Learning Conference

The concept of organizational learning is known to most of us as the ability of an organisation to

make solid, rational internal changes to adapt to its ever changing external environment. Learning

organisations do not rely on serendipitously stumbling across a learning opportunity but rather

actively promote learning through a variety of tools, techniques and initiatives. The importance of

organisational learning is inherent in almost all international standards and models today, be it in

the subtle requirement of review in the fundamental ISO 9001 Standard for Quality Management,

or the more intricate non prescriptive guideline of assessment and refinement dictated by

International Excellence Models.

IIP is the only international quality standard that is purely focused on the contribution of people to organisations for business improvement. It began in the early 1990s asa response to recovery from recession. The standard’s main objective is to improve Organisational performance through the effective management and development of people.Advantage of IIP Standard:1. It is very cost-effective as the fees are far less compared to other international standards such as ISO and EFQM.2. It fits with and is perfectly integrated with other standards and initiatives such as ISO 9001:2008, EFQM 2010, Kaizen, Six Sigma and Balanced Scorecard; i.e. once an organisation complies with the IIP standard, it has automatically covered criteria 3 and 7 and parts of criteria 1 and 9 in the EFQM Model (SKEA, SKGEP, DGEP, DQA, AJEP,RAKGOV …etc).3. It improves the culture of excellence and learning throughout the organisation.4. Flexible and easy to use; assessment is simple and does not require a submission documents; assessment is based on interviews with people that represents all management layers and levels.5. The results are promptly communicated to the organisations at the end of the assessment which gives good deal of time to work on the areas for improvement.6. Improves the productivity of people. According to Canfield research, it was found that productivity was increased by 42% for organisations that has implemented IIP Standard.7. It was also found that 2/3 of organisations involved in IIP have changed their training practices and 57% of IIP organisations believe that IIP has improved the quality and performance of the whole organisation.8. The IIP standard has positive impacts on innovations and improves the employees› satisfactions levels.9. IIP has positive impacts on return on assets (Cranfield Study, 2008)10. IIP has positive impacts on effective communication both inside and outside the organisation. The list of empirical findings is very long where the report by Cranfield University comprised of 127 full pages. Asthe standard is new to the UAE and the region, I thought of sharing a snapshot with of this with our readers. IPEis organizing a series of seminars across the UAE to further highlight the details.

From the CEO’s DeskThe whole world has recently suffered the negative impacts of the global financial crisis. Many organisations have devised new policies and taken several actionsto cut costs and trim their budgets. One of these short-term, short-sighted actionswas the cutting on the training

and learning activities budget. Was it right? I think the poor quality products and services that the whole world, particu-larly in the automotive, healthcare and education indus-tries, should mean something. In my views as an academic and a practitioner, Learning and Development should always be a red-line. Yes, there are ways to reduce the expenditure on this element of the budget without completely removing it or cutting it down to 50%: Organisa-tions can have well-trained and qualified in-house training and bring trainers from abroad instead of delegating employees all over the world; E-learning can be utilized where applicable; benchmarking activities can play a major role in learning; crossexposure, job-rotation, and many other mechanisms can be employed to foster Organisa-tional Learning inside the organisation. One of the most recognised and well-proven mechanisms is using the international Investors in People Standard (IIP) which was developed over 20 years ago and is currently being used in all sectors in the United Kingdom. There are more than 40,000 organisations that are using this standard, 35,000 of which are accredited organisations.

This standard comprises of 10 indicators (criteria) as shown in Figure (1). Under the ten indicators, there are 39 evidence require-ments that are expected to be met in order for an organisa-tion to become accredited. Organisations have two options for accreditation:The whole organisation, with all its business units, applies for assessment

One business unit applies as a pilot with the rest of the units applying at a later time within an agreed timeframe. This model is known as «Building Blocks»

In addition, he matched between the European Foundation for Quality Management Excellence Model (EFQM) (which is provided by IPE as well) and Investors in People (IIP) on how both at the end depend on the people results, which means that concentrating on the human resource within the organization is the most important factor for the future plans success.

H.E Dr. Ali Al Khouri, Director General of Emirates Identity Authority, spoke about the strategies of EIDA in investing in its people, and why it is one of the most important things for the successful of an organization to concentrate on the needs and comfort of the employees, and what an employee feels about his/ her organization. Also he gave his opinion in IIP framework and standards and suggested some points that IIP needs to include in its process.

H.E. James explained to the delegates IIP frame of work and how it depends on the gap analysis to know the status of the organization and proceed with the solutions for these gaps. He then closed his speech by mentioning that Dusit Thani hotel now is considering upgrading to IIP Bronze recognition.

The ceremony witnessed the participation of all the delegates with the concept of IIP at the end of the forum when Dr. Alaa asked them to divide into groups and to name three different elements that let the employee feels comfortable and happy by going to his/her work to ensure the that all the audience understood fully the framework of IIP and its effect on the employees. The last presentation was conducted by Mr. Alex Boulting, Senior Change Management Specialist, Corporate Excellence Division, GASCO. Mr. Alex also discussed GASCO journey towards getting the license of IIP.
