Podio Gets Real (Time)Andy Nilssen, [email protected] & Alan D. Greenberg, [email protected]

The Citrix Podio team workspace / “roll your own” online business process service is poised to make a big leap towards enabling the offering with real-time communications. While real-time, text-based “Live Commenting” was added to Podio’s activity streams back in January, starting in late May the offering will track each user’s presence status and place presence dots next to each name in Podio dialogs, which in turn can be used to initiate real-time conversations using a new “Podio Chat” window. Real-time text chat can also be used within a Podio “app item” — either 1:1 or with the larger team — with the dialog neatly filed as part of the application. The ability to

escalate any real-time text dialog to use Citrix’s HDFaces audio and video conferencing will be added this summer (point-to-point only). The presence / text chat capability will also be available on Podio mobile clients, which will use “push” notifications to show incoming messages in near real-time. For those who care, Podio Chat is XMPP-based, which opens the possibilities for federation with other presence services going forward.

What Andy thinks: There is more here than meets the eye. While the ability to escalate an IM session to include audio and video conferencing is not new, the Citrix spin is different: a) HDFaces performs very well — once enabled, this will be a great way to communicate, b) Citrix is not treating text chat as a separate communications silo — it is natively integrated into each Podio application / process, thus each dialog is taken and retained in context, c) Citrix has elected to offer its own presence service, rather than glom onto someone else’s. As a real-time communications provider, this is a strong statement that Citrix is moving to become more “UC” — but from a different business processes apps-driven, SMB-focused direction. Most SMB’s have probably been happy using consumer-grade AOL or Yahoo chat — but now have a reason to change. With Citrix entering the presence

services game, can a collision with the large enterprise-focused, telephony-driven UC biggies possibly be avoided?

What Alan thinks: Citrix boasts that over 200,000 organizations are on Podio at this point, with the majority of its paying customers coming from its online, e-Commerce sales. But presumably some of those are also coming from the GoToMeeting user base, where up to five GoToMeeting users get free access to Podio. Not coincidentally, five individuals from any one domain name is the freemium offering’s limit; Podio offers upgrade pricing of $9 per user per month for more employees. The freemium approach is a clever way to try to drive usage virally — as is the ability to chat with Podio app users on their iPhone and Google Android devices. Team workspace products take some getting used to so whatever Podio does to expose itself to the masses, the better. We’re also watching closely how the two platforms work in the same sandbox and interact over time, and it will be interesting to see if each drives usage of the other.

For those who care, Podio Chat is XMPP-based, which opens the possibilities for federation with other presence services going forward.

Sony Intros Two Group Video Conferencing SystemsAndrew W. Davis

Sony has quietly introduced two new high end video conferencing systems to the company’s worldwide channel partner network. The PCS-XG100S and PCS-XG77S are cut from the same mold and based on the same hardware platform, but feature different price / performance design centers. Pricing below reflects included camera, though we believe the systems are available sans camera as well.

What Andrew thinks: Based on feeds and speeds, the Sony offering seems to be sufficiently competitive with hardware devices from its competition. The 1080p60 is nice, but we’re not sure how many real users are taking advantage of this capability, now available from pretty much all the leading vendors. For penetrating the large enterprise, Sony needs much stronger channel relationships, certainly here in North America. The situation is likely different in Japan, where Sony has a commanding market share. For the SMB market, the brand name Sony should carry a more

News in BriefWeb Conferencing / Team Workspaces• Naples, Italy-based Docebo, an e-Learning / Learning

Management System provider somewhat new to WR, has announced integration Apps with Citrix GoToMeeting, Cisco WebEx, OnSync by Digital Samba, and Teleskill Live web conferencing software. These are a follow-on to recent integrations with Adobe Connect and BigBlueButton, and will enable Single Sign On between Docebo’s LMS and the web conferencing offerings. Docebo seems to be placing special emphasis on the ability to use video with these services, as well.

Audio• German vendor Lindenbaum has expanded its

portfolio of audio and web conferencing with online collaboration and desktop video conferencing. The new teamwork solution can be used either stand-alone or together with audio conferencing. During a session, web conferencing functions are condensed in a sidebar, allowing quick access to all the range of services with a single click. The capability service also includes the ability to share and work on documents, embedded desktop video, an application filter, whiteboarding, chat, file sharing, and session recording (video and audio) in .AVI format. Automatic language adaptation is now available for several languages based on the language of the host operating system.

• Radisys Corporation has announced that GENBAND has selected its Software Media Resource Function (MRF) to provide the IP media processing for GENBAND’s EXPERiUS application server and CONTiNUUM call session controllers. Radisys and GENBAND — formerly known as General Bandwidth and which focuses on fixed and mobile service providers — collaborated to enable virtualized media processing to meet the growing demand for cloud-based deployments. By offering these software components in a virtualized cloud deployment model, GENBAND will provide its customers with flexible service offerings that they can quickly take to market.

• ConferTel has launched a closed captioning system to enhance its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 508 compliance. The new ConferTel closed captioning feature requires no additional software installation, and is compatible with existing firewalls and other security protocols. With the ConferTel closed captioning system, the text on screen is fully in sync with all the other elements being broadcast.

Unified Communications• VoIP and telephony player ShoreTel announced the

ShoreTel Dock, the industry’s first business-grade docking station. The Dock transforms iPhones and iPads into business desk phones when paired with ShoreTel Mobility software. Employees can simply slide their ShoreTel Mobility-enabled iPhone or iPad into the ShoreTel Dock and get instant access to a recharging station and get the call quality of a (wired) business desk phone. The ShoreTel Mobility app supports screen sharing from the iOS device via the ShoreTel Conferencing App, and most of the features

one expects in this sort of platform, minus video conferencing (though the Dock apparently does not prevent users from accessing other iOS apps that include video, e.g., FaceTime). The ShoreTel Dock is planned to be available Q3 CY-2013 for both premise-based and cloud platforms, with an expected list price of $349 USD.

• Orange Business Services recently announced global expansion of its Cisco Hosted Collaboration Solution (HCS)-based UCaaS offering. Designed to support large global enterprises, Orange’s Business Together as a Service offering hopes to make it quick and cost-effective for IT management to deploy UCaaS tools. Comprising unified communications and collaboration tools offered via the cloud, such as

significantly, and 2) a new Beamforming Microphone Array now complements the other pieces of its professionally installed audio conferencing product lines. While details of the revenues are missing from the press release and financial tables, during the earnings call it was revealed that video represented about 12% of revenues, up 111% year over year.

• Moscow-based (and WR Bulletin Russian translation partner) TrueConf has released a mobile

application for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch users. TrueConf for iOS 1.2 is a mobile solution that supports both symmetrical and role-

based group video conferences with up to 250 endpoints. The new version of TrueConf Mobile 1.2 for iOS allows users of Apple iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch to communicate using multipoint video conferencing. Video conferencing for up to three participants is available for free and the company charges for licenses for larger multipoint sessions. The new version of the iOS

application has an updated UI as well.

• Keeping up with the love-hate relationship embodied in Logitech’s ownership of LifeSize, Logitech CEO Bracken Darrell has publicly stated that the company will intensify its focus on the small-to-medium business market, after an internal strategic review. After stating in January that it would write down LifeSize’s value and consider shutting down or selling the business, he apparently now expects it to possibly produce positive core earnings by end of year. A breather the LifeSize gang no doubt will appreciate.

telephony, unified messaging, Instant Messaging with presence, conferencing (audio, Web and video), and mobility, Business Together as a Service allows access anytime, anywhere, using a PC, tablet, smartphone, or dedicated device — such as an IP phone. Available on six continents, the solution is supported by three Orange Business Services Tier III+ or Tier IV data centers, located in Atlanta, Frankfurt and Singapore, which are part of the Orange Business Services dedicated cloud computing infrastructure.

Channels• Dallas-based cart / furniture maker AVTEQ is now

carrying Barco’s ClickShare product as an optional feature for its line of collaboration solutions and A/V carts.

• SoundConnect is now carrying Microsoft Lync for its U.S. customers. The conferencing service provider will host Lync in a SaaS delivery model, after reportedly spending two years in the research and selection process. The company also happens to resell Adobe Connect, Cisco WebEx, WebConnect, and ReadyMeeting web conferencing, Google Apps for Business, and several video conferencing products and services.

• Lighthouse Conferencing has been named a strategic partner of Adobe Connect. As a strategic partner, Lighthouse Conferencing has been named value added Adobe Connect reseller, conferencing service provider, and provider of event services for webinars.

Video • ClearOne reported $11.3M in Q1 revenues, a Q1 high

for the company. The nice year over year growth for the company was attributed to two product factors (in addition to some personnel factors): 1) Share of video products in the revenue mix has grown

• Vidyo has chosen Phoenix Audio Technologies’ Quattro3 as the only audio solution to be bundled with its HD100 video conferencing product. The Quattro3 is a full-duplex, beamforming, HD audio (16 KHz) speakerphone with high quality echo cancelation and noise suppression

• Huawei has introduced the SMC 2.0 video conferenc-ing management tool, which integrates web control, OA integration, resource manage-ment, registration management, user management, and conference man-agement. SMC 2.0 supports real-time equipment surveillance, alert handling, and batch remote upgrades and con-figuration. SMC 2.0 also manages multi-vendor envi-ronments (and is interoperable with Lync and OCS as well as IBM Sametime, according to the company) and handles firewall traversal, as well as MCU cascad-ing, redundancy, and so on. A final feature being touted: tiered permission management, which allows managers of different levels to define permissions.

• Net Medical Xpress, a developer of medical IT solutions and services, has implemented Tely Lab’s telyMed video calling solution as part of its new range of remote, telemedicine-based clinical and diagnostic programs for hospitals. Net Medical Xpress serves 15,600 hospitals, and since implementation the company claims it has avoided transferring patients to other healthcare facilities in 106 out of 114 video consult cases, a 93% success rate. Those hospitals able to retain their patients reportedly were able to generate 10x more revenue for those patients who otherwise would have been transferred.

• Blue Jeans Network announced the availability of a new All You Can Meet pricing plan (with a name like that, who needs dessert?). This new plan lets companies easily deploy, use, and scale video conferencing across the organization for one low fixed price, without the fear of variable costs or overage fees. The unlimited-use, site-wide license allows every user in the organization to schedule and host video meetings through their own Blue Jeans account, allowing up to 25 participants per meeting. Participants can choose to use any of the business and consumer endpoints supported by the service. The new tiered offering is based on company size and features an annual fee that is determined by the number of “active users” within the company. An active user is an account holder that hosts at least one meeting per month. The cost per active user ranges from $10 to $50 per user per month, based on the size of the deployment.

4Personal & Web-Based Conferencing

Vendor Profile – MicrosoftMicrosoft became a major web conferencing player over a decade ago with its acquisition of PlaceWare. Since then, the company has invested substantial development and marketing muscle in Lync and Lync Online, acquired Skype, and, in the process, pulled the plug on Live Meeting. This profile provides detailed information, insight, and analysis on Microsoft and its latest personal & web-based collaboration offerings.

Vendor Profile – IBMIBM is working to achieve balance on a number of initiatives: On-premise vs. cloud services, UC vs. “Social Business”, and, in web conferencing, Sametime “classic” vs. Unyte. This profile provides detailed information, insight, and analysis on IBM and its personal & web-based collaboration offerings.

4Unified Communications

Research Note – Introducing the Lync Room SystemIn February 2013 Microsoft introduced a Reference Architecture for a Lync-based video conferencing and collaboration room system dubbed the Lync Room System (LRS). LRS will extend the Lync meeting experience into the boardroom, replicating a familiar scheduling, start/join, and meeting management experience for the end user. Microsoft’s tight control of the audio, video, and computational specifications provides a level playing field for the vendors, while reducing the opportunity for innovation. This research note covers the four LRS systems introduced at the announcement and the implications LRS has for the vendors, channel partners, and end users in the conferencing and collaboration industry.

Metrics Survey – Worldwide Enterprise Trends of Unified CommunicationsThis 2012 survey covers the unified communications (UC) market and focuses on end user communications preferences and organizational UC strategy, brand awareness, deployment options, and related purchasing behavior. Respondents are split fairly evenly between small-to-medium enterprises (SME) with 500 or fewer employees and mid-to-large enterprises with greater than 500 employees; therefore, the results are segmented between SME and mid-to-large markets when appropriate.

4Distance Education & e-Learning

Vendor Profile – PanoptoPanopto targets the education and enterprise markets via two cloud-based products that together comprise the Panopto Video Platform: Focus - a Windows and Mac lecture capture application for recording and webcasting, and Unison - a video and slide importing web / management service. With a SaaS model and a variety of distribution deals through partners like Pearson, Panopto is an up-and-comer that faces a fork in the road.

Market Forecast – Interactive Whiteboards for Education and Training WW Supplier Market Sizing & 5-Year ForecastThis forecast covers the worldwide market for suppliers of interactive whiteboard products and associated software as applied for education and train-ing. The market sizing and five-year forecast estimate – based on vendor data and end user surveys – calculates the total amount of revenue associated with education and training going to three markets: corporate training, higher education, and primary / secondary education, and ranks vendors in each of the market segments

Vendor Profile – BrightcoveOnline video platform pioneer Brightcove offers the streaming market’s best-known and most widely used hosted subscription software product for archiving, managing and distributing video content. However, the company has experienced a less than enthusiastic reception from Wall Street investors. This report describes the company’s current product line-up and evaluates its strategic options as management continues the hunt for a viable business model for its hosted video solutions.
