Tenancy conditionsAre you missing out?We met with Eileen Martin (EM), AmicusHorizon Regional Director, to find out more about the new tenancy conditions and why it’s important to sign up to them.

Why are we asking

residents to sign

the new tenancy

conditions?

EM: We’ve changed our

tenancy conditions following

customer feedback on a

number of issues, including

parking regulations. There

have also been changes

in the law we need to take

into account. We’ve made

the conditions clearer so

residents know what their

rights and responsibilities

are.

Do residents get

a new tenancy

agreement?

EM: No, it changes the

conditions of their existing

tenancy agreement.

Do the new conditions apply

retrospectively?

EM: No, they don’t. The new

conditions will apply from

when a resident

signs.

How can residents sign up?

EM: The great

news is over 8,500

residents have already

signed up to the new

conditions. The original

sign up pack was sent out

at the end of last year, but

if you need a replacement

just call us on 0800 121 60

60. You can also sign the

conditions online: www.

amicushorizon.org.uk/

yourview

Who doesn’t need

to sign?EM: If you live in one of our

Housing for Older People

schemes you don’t need

to sign the new conditions.

And if you moved into an

AmicusHorizon home since

November 2013, you’ll

automatically have

signed up.

Do residents have

to sign?EM: No, but it will help us if

you let us know. Just so we

can discuss any concerns

you have and don’t continue

to contact you about this.

RAMP is here to improve services for youOur Repairs and Maintenance Panels (RAMPs) are made up of residents. They look

at our repairs services and work with us to continually improve them. Here’s what

some of the members have to say…

War on water waste!Saving water is great for the environment and your

pocket! Try these top tips: Toilets use about 30% of the total water used in a home. Insert a water

device (save-a-flush) in the cistern and save up to three litres per flush

If you’ve got a shower, use it instead of having a bath. You can have up to five showers for the water used in just one bath. Use a shower timer to avoid being in the shower too long

A dripping hot tap wastes water and energy. In one week it could waste enough water to fill a bath. Report leaking taps and get them fixed

Washing machines use a lot of water so always wash a full load

Wash the car with a bucket and sponge rather than a hose. If you have a water butt consider getting a hose connector

Always turn off the tap when brushing your teeth

Chill a jug of water in the fridge. You won’t need to let the tap run cold when you want a drink.

Got a great tip for saving water?

Tweet us @amicushorizon #savingwater

Brushes at the ready…

Decorating your home might seem expensive but here’s some great ideas for refreshing your rooms on a budget!

Mix your own paint. Buy small sample pots and cheap white paint

to create beautiful pastel colours. These are ideal for decorating bedrooms

Need different sized paint brushes? Use an elastic band round a

bigger paint brush to create a small brush for corners and cutting in Line your paint tray with foil. You won’t need to buy new trays for

each colour Wallpaper samples are free! Use strips of wallpaper samples and

varnish to brighten up small pieces of furniture Make your own modern art to hang on the wall. Use leftover paint,

stencils, stamps, postcards, material scraps and cheap canvases.

Try this website for inspiration: www.brit.co/diy-wall-art Get online. If you need cheap paint, tiles and equipment visit online

recycling and second hand sites such as: http://my.freecycle.org/ or

Do you have a beautiful garden? Are your hanging baskets the pride of the neighbourhood? Have you been involved in improving shared gardens?

If yes, we’d love to hear from you. See the enclosed leaflet for the full details.

Send us photos of your hard work by 24 August or contact Adeshola Thomas, Housing Officer, for more information.

In June, more than 75 of our older residents enjoyed cream tea at Leeford Place, Battle. We invited older residents who live in our general needs homes to come and find out more about our services.

The agenda included consultation on our governance structure and a talk by our Money Matters Team. We gave out useful information on our services for older people. There was also a chance for residents to feedback on anti social behaviour in their area. And after all the hard work, everyone enjoyed delicious cakes, scones and sandwiches!

Nick Hurd, Minister for Civil Society, visited Eastbourne in May to hear from local residents who we’ve helped into work.

He met participants from our successful employment programmes including the ‘Get On’ project and ‘DIYSOS’. He heard how they’d gained confidence, found work, got into university and even set up their own businesses as a result of the projects.

Sussex resident, Lucy Mepham, who attended the DIYSOS and the Get On training courses explained: “It was a big step for me to even sign up for the courses but I’m so glad I did. As the weeks went by, my confidence grew and the tutors helped me see how many choices I had.”

Mr Hurd was inspired by what he saw, commenting: “My visit has shown me an organisation that is giving people a great sense of community and showing them people care about their lives.”

DIYSOS success!

Hastings Area Panel news

Are you interested in shaping and influencing the services we provide to residents?

The Area Panel has resident vacancies and we’re looking for new people to get involved. You’d need to be available one evening every three months to attend our quarterly meetings. We’d also like members to help represent the panel at events. You can work this around your availability and find a level of involvement that’s right for you. We offer training and support for all our members.

Police Sgt Dave Townsend – Independent member says: “Being a member of Hastings Area Panel is a very good way of interacting with the community. I see residents on the panel being empowered and making decisions that improve the quality of life for fellow residents.”

Residents who register their interest before 12 August will be eligible to stand in the annual elections. Residents who register their interest after this time can still get involved after elections. If you’d like to find out more, contact Karen Earl, Resident Governance Officer.

The Hastings Area Panel invested their £26k local improvement fund last year. The money was spent on 20 projects, improving neighbourhoods across Hastings.

The great news is, there’s more money to spend this year. If you’ve an idea on how your neighbourhood can be improved, all you need to do is complete an enquiry form and we’ll do the rest.

Contact Response on 0800 121 60 60 or 01795 434 606 for a form or visit: www.amicushorizon.org.uk/LIF

We’ll be running a six week course (one day a week) starting in September in the Hastings area. The course gives you the skills, knowledge and confidence to successfully run cookery classes, clubs and food related activities in your community. If you’d like more details please contact: Vanessa Porter, Senior Community Worker on 0800 121 60 60 or email: [email protected]

We’ve been working with residents in our Housing for Older People (HOPS) schemes to create some fantastic mosaic artwork. So far residents from Halton Heights, Torfield Terrace, St Martins and Royal Terrace have all been involved. The project will soon be coming to Bevin Court in St Leonards.

The mosaic artwork even featured at our older people’s art exhibition in Hastings.

Our mosaic art tutor is Emma Frankish who’s a previous ‘Get On’ participant. She’s since set up her own enterprise running community based craft workshops. For more details call Emma on 01424 272548 or email: [email protected]

We’ve officially opened nine new homes at Appledore Close, Eastbourne and local residents have already moved in!

The project resulted from a partnership with Eastbourne Borough Council, who’ve transferred three sites to us. Appledore Close was the first site to be completed, a further two schemes will finish later this year.

Local resident, Mr Green has moved into Appledore Close with his partner and four children after spending six months in temporary accommodation. He said: “Our new home is fantastic, really spacious and it means a fresh start for myself and my family. It’s been a smooth process moving in and staff have kept us updated all the way.”
