One such article pertains to the “inverter” type gasoline powered generator. The article, written by Mark J. Wilson K1RO, compares four different brands and he gives a pretty good description on how they work. As with most everything out there, there are pros and cons with each brand. Some of us are already familiar with this type generator as that is what was used at last year’s field day. James and Susan provided their Honda generator for us to use and I can tell you that it is one fine machine. Almost made its own fuel! Well not quiet but we only used a small portion of the fuel most other type generators would have used. It was quiet to boot. Another interesting article describes the new added benefit to ARRL members. This new feature is the introduction of the digital issue of QST. As I understand it, members will be able to search past issues of QST. From S. Khrystyne Keane K1SFA’s article, “Members will also gain access to archived issues of QST from December 1915 to the present.” This should keep us busy on those hot summer nights when we can’t sleep! Well, there are more good articles in the June issue of QST but I’ll not go into them now. If you’re not a ARRL member, give it some consideration and if you decide to join, do so through the club as we are allowed to keep a small portion of the dues for our own use. James or Susan should have the information as well as the applications for ARRL membership. June 2 nd will be here soon and as you recall, we agreed to provide communications for the Blue Ridge Horseman’s Associations endurance ride. Jerry and Floyd will be setting their communications trailer at the entrance to the campground one evening soon to conduct test to see what we will need to have reliable radio comms between the three areas where we are needed. Please keep your schedule as flexible as possible so as to be available for these tests. Also, the fourth weekend in June is Field Day and we are once again going to the Adako Road home of Floyd Key and climb his hill to participate in this annual event. This is a great opportunity to check out your radio before you might actually need to operate it in the field. Come to the meeting Thursday night for more details. I hope you are having fun with amateur radio and are actively involved with “ON THE AIR” activities. Scott

President's Column

My June QST came in the mail today and as usual, it has many articles that interest me; maybe you too. One such article pertains to the “inverter” type gasoline powered generator. The article,

written by Mark J. Wilson K1RO, compares four different brands and he gives a pretty good description on how they work. As with most everything out there, there are pros and cons with each brand. From the EditorGreetings,Summer vacation has arrived (Yeah) and I plan to enjoy it.The Catawba Valley Hamfest went well, crowds were down some and there was a constant threat of rain, but everyone had

a good time and I spent too much money. There are several new hams in the area. In the following list, Dan came from the hackerspace, the rest from the WPCC class. Unless otherwise listed, all are Techs.

There is a lot going on in the area. On June 2, LARC will be operating communications for the horse ride. The same day, the hackerspace (FCW) has an open house and cookout from 10AM to 6PM. It will be observing the completion of the classroom and model shop and the opening of Ham station K4FCW. So, before or after your horsride shift, slide on down to Granite Falls

and join us for food and activities. We will have interests and activities for all ages. www.foothillscommunityworkshop.orgOther events of Interest: June 8-10 is the Southeast Linuxfest (southeastlinuxfest.org) at the Blake Hotel in Charlotte. Finally is Field Day, in addition to the LARC activites, FCW will be having Field Day at the hackerspace. It's going to be a busy Summer.BTW, on the TV series “Touch” last week, a Ham radio operator saved the life of an astronaut on the ISS.
