EX-COLLINGWOOD STUDENT AND APPRENTICE CANDIDATE, RICHARD WOODS, VISITS COLLINGWOOD

This year’s series of The Apprentice saw the return of London’s entrepreneurial giant, Lord Sugar, and the arrival of Windlesham’s entrepreneurial hobbit, Collingwood’s own Richard Woods. Alumnus Richard returned to Collingwood Sixth Form with his brother Tim, on Tuesday 1 March, to give a motivational talk to the upper school. Wading through swarms of blue jumpers armed with front-facing cameras, the Woods brothers were bombarded by young Apprentice fanatics and teachers, some of whom were old classmates.

Richard inspired our students with his tales of triumph; from selling photo frames in China, managing to stay awake in Mr Tanner’s PE classes to performing Kenickie in Grease! We were incredibly honoured to meet someone who had made the most out of the opportunities Collingwood presented, and seized every other chance given to him since. Thank you Richard and Tim for showing us that believing does lead to succeeding.

Katie Wells (Year 13 student) and Olivia Norris (Year 13 student / Head Girl)

COLLINGWOOD CELEBRATES WORLD BOOK DAY 2016 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

During break times, staff from several departments read stories to students in the library, while dressed up as story book characters. A special thanks go to the Maths Department for their enthusiasm and great costumes! Other activities included a book swap where students and staff were able to donate unwanted books for raffle tickets and then exchange the raffle tickets for other books. 138 books were ‘swapped’ by the students and staff! There was also a story writing competition which involved students writing about a day in the life of a story book character at Collingwood College. This has been great fun but sadly it only takes place once a year!

On arrival at Boston there was shades of the film Cool Runnings when those automatic doors opened and everyone emerged into the -19° temperature. We would have departed those extreme temperatures quickly if we weren’t delayed somewhat by the realisation Sam had left his phone on the plane! Can you believe that the phone actually made its way back to Collingwood for his arrival back in England. It does give you a little faith in the world!

However, on arrival at the hotel that cold temperature had dropped another 10° - Brrrrrrrrrr!! Some rest was gained on the coach and this was much required as after just 6 hours sleep (as well as factoring in the time difference) the students were woken to prepare for the first day’s skiing.

After a swift albeit somewhat delayed ski and helmet fit the students headed into the bitterly cold (-35° at its coldest) for the first two hours skiing.

All of the students met their instructors and soon formed bonds that would create lasting memories. However, due to the extreme cold the instructors

made the sensible decision to make up the other two hours throughout the remainder of the week rather than brave the extreme cold for a further two hours. Although that first ever morning of skiing for some students really was a baptism of fire temperature wise, the conditions under the skis were fantastic.

Everyone just about survived the first day. There were a few crashes and falls - mainly the staff (Miss Wilson in particular) and Lee's group as a whole but the learner bib (when it went to a vote) went to Miss Wilson who accepted it and wore it with pride the next day. By the end of a slightly warmer second day it was easy to see that the whole group were progressing fast and everyone had got the bug for skiing. What was more impressive was the clamour to free-ski with Mr San. It’s always such a pleasure to see students eager to learn. It obviously helps when the activity is great fun!

Day 3 threw in a new challenge - rain!! It came in abundance, like never before seen on any trip I have been on, let alone in the US! The instructors said 3 inches of rain fell in the area from around 10.00am through to late that evening and meant that conditions for Day 4 were going to be interesting and slippery as the temperatures fell during the night.

SKIING IN THE USA ….

Day 4 was treacherous as the slopes were extremely icy. Considering this, to only have one minor injury was testament to how well the students skied during that day. Even that one minor injury was nothing to do with the ice Becky tells us, she was feeling a knock on her knee from the previous day.

That being said, Ellis, Maisie and Ellie B did their best to injure themselves on Day 4 with a complete wipeout that no-one could stand up from. Harry did his best to injure himself pretty much every day and as for Josh D…..!! Thankfully the dropping temperatures and snow cannons meant there was a healthy cover of snow on the final day.

The final day came and as yet there were no major injuries to tend with so everyone could enjoy their last day with the instructors.

Collingwood has become so popular over the last five years with the instructors, Lee, Rich, Roy, Dmitri, Tom and ‘Baaaarb’, they now ask for us when they work the half-term week. We value their skills and their friendship immensely. On that final morning the locals must have thought they had been transported into the Minion movie as Gru and his batch of minions headed up to the slopes and then off onto the

mountain! Mr Chauhan’s resemblance to the character from the film was mocked by the other staff who all donned their minion outfits for the day! The progress all the students had made by the end of their skiing was phenomenal and particular credit should go to Lee’s group who made huge strides and ended up the week by skiing a tough black diamond trail.

SKIING IN THE USA …. Throughout the week the evening entertainment was varied. The first evening we rested and recovered after the long journey – though it didn’t stop Ellen showing her croupier skills and teaching many how to gamble – with sweets and biscuits as the stakes!

The second evening was the annual trip to the Rutland Bowlerama. This was again a popular night out. The real surprise here was that many of the boys, Sam T, Dan and Zach initially staked their New York shopping cash on being able to beat Mr Andrews and Mr San but ended up having to use the kiddie’s gutter rails. Most of the students were even more excited by the purchase of 90+ donuts from Dunkin Donuts and the short trip to Walmart. This was soon dampened by the fact the store immediately closed when they heard the Year 10 boys were coming in to stock up on their Mountain Dew and Oreo cookies. However, thanks should be made to our Yellow Bus driver who drove us across town to Price Dropper so that the students could stock up.

The next evening was a slight change from the usual routine and a disco was hosted at our hotel. Whilst some students took a while to get into the swing of ‘busting their moves’ the DJ (an outstanding one too!) soon had everyone dancing away. He was even gracious enough to pause the dancing to allow Mr San to croon his anthem “We Will Rock You”!

Night 4 was the annual quiz, and whilst there was the usual general knowledge there were a number of interesting rounds thrown in. Despite the clamour for the Harry Potter round to remain in, the staff knew the current score and cut the quiz short whilst they were still leading, much to the dismay of Emily and Jess!

There were two other surprises during the week for the birthday boys Cameron George and Alex Evans. I can’t think of a better way to celebrate your birthday than to be skiing on the slopes with your friends.

Over the time in resort there were many golden envelopes up for grabs. Kieron Brown seemed to have the knack for picking right, winning two of them. Calam’s room were delighted to win the first night’s envelope which was short-lived when they realised that they would be the staffs’ slaves for the next day. Mr San Emeterio was quick to select Josh as a slave (I think the comment was "You're mine!"). The staff started as they intended to go on ensuring coffee and breakfast

were served at their table by the students. Skis were carried, doors were opened, goggles were wiped and then it dawned on us what was still to come - the envelope where the staff were the student’s slaves for the day. This was picked by Kieron and the tables were turned - the students’ revenge was sweet. Kieron also won lunch for all of his group and Rich’s group won waffles.

SKIING IN THE USA …. The time at Killington had come to an end, sad and long goodbyes had been said to the instructors at the hotel after presenting them with their very own Collingwood fleece and the journey to Manhattan began. A two hour stop was made at Woodbury Common outlet and people were literally running

around the massive complex. I think Miss Adie broke the land speed record in her shopathon! The shopaholics (mainly the boys!) had a field day. Nike, Michael Kors, Converse and Calvin Klein stores really didn’t know what hit them as Collingwood descended, but it was nothing compared to what happened on arrival in Manhattan. Around mid-afternoon we emerged from the Lincoln Tunnel and saw the bright lights of Times Square. When we arrived at Macy’s (the world famous store not Beattie!) the Woodbury Common shop looked like a walk in the park as the students went to town, especially when the girls then migrated to VS Pink!

That night after a quick change into ‘Woodbury Wear’ we dined at the Hard Rock Cafe in Times Square where the food and the ambience was great. After dinner we trekked downtown to the Empire State Building to soak in the sights and views from 90 stories up. We were extremely lucky to

have a beautifully clear night and it was an amazing experience. The next morning there was no rest for anyone. Checking out of the hotel by 7.30am we were on the 8.30am Staten Island Ferry. It was a beautiful morning and we caught sight of the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline.

When we returned to dry land we immediately walked up to the 9/11 memorial and museum and as a group we all politely paid our respects to those that lost their lives in the attack on the twin towers. The two waterfalls designed and shaped in the foundations of the two towers are truly a wonderful tribute. The area itself was somewhat understandably calm and quiet. Many roses had been placed in the names of the victims who should have been celebrating their birthday. This put into perspective just how many innocent people lost their lives on that day.

SKIING IN THE USA …. We could have spent all day in the museum and many individuals became emotional as we recounted those tragic events. The students showed great respect and understanding of this special place.

For the remaining couple of hours, the shopaholics went to town again but this time in Fifth Avenue. When we met at 4.30pm to head to the airport everyone was shopped out. It was interesting on arrival at the airport to find out that our pilot shares the same ethos as Collingwood.

The excitement of meeting the pilot was soon overshadowed when walking through security as Maddie realised she was stood behind Kendall Jenner (of Kardashian fame with 45million followers on social media!). Pretty soon word spread and whilst Charlie was quickest off the mark for a photo the rest of the group soon followed and the superstar was very kind in posing for a few photos with the group!

During the flight home many took the opportunity to gain some well earned rest and arrived back on time to meet their parents. In many years of running the ski trips this was comfortably one of the most enjoyable I have ever had – due to an amazing group of young people and the hard working and dedicated staff who accompanied me. The smooth running of the trip is testimony to the mature attitude of the students who went and I want to thank each and every one of them on behalf of my six colleagues for making this a fabulous trip. I hope our promise that this would be the trip of a lifetime was kept.

YEAR 9 PROJECTS Our Year 9 Project students are currently busy preparing themselves for formal presentations of their topics to a panel of Staff and Governors, to be held in the next fortnight. As usual, there has been a fantastic array of topics chosen by the students to explore and investigate for their qualification. Some stand-out ones this year have been “How has India developed since the Raj?" - Artiya Shaik and "How have advances in camera technology influenced the Photograph over time?" - Caitlin Jardine.

A highlight from this year's Project lessons came when Bradley Hulland gained permission to bring in his pet Bearded Lizard. Bradley's project is on reptile care and he used this opportunity to showcase his knowledge of reptiles, teach the group something new and also to collect feedback from the class to use as primary research. Bradley did a wonderful job explaining how lizards feed, how to care for them and what the job of looking after one entails. He allowed students to touch the Bearded Dragon, which behaved itself impeccably throughout the whole talk. The students and staff thoroughly enjoyed this visit, and Bradley was an excellent public speaker.

Another success story from this year has been Molly Hall, also in Year 9. Her Project is entitled "How to design a show garden for the Hampton Court Flower Show”. From Day 1, Molly has researched the structure and horticultural elements needed for her environmentally-friendly design for a garage that is covered in an assortment of heathers. Her designs are fantastic and have impressed the Hampton Court Flower Show organisers, who have invited her to enter them for this year's Show competition.

Her investigations have led her to attend workshops at RHS Wisley Gardens and to communicate with some of the top horticultural experts in this field. Molly has been chosen to represent Collingwood in the RHS Young School Gardener of

the Year Competition, where she can use her Project designs as part of her competition entry portfolio. We wish her all the best in this nationwide competition.

PARENT FOCUS GROUP - CURRENT BEHAVIOUR ISSUES If you would like to discuss current behaviour issues in education generally or more specifically at Collingwood then Monday 21 March is the forum to do so in our next focus group session. These will include e-safety, bullying and uniform, along with many others. The session will begin at 7.00pm in Kingston Theatre and along with some senior colleagues that deal with behaviour on a daily basis I will freely discuss and explain hot topics, procedures and our ethos on dealing with behaviour, both positive and negative. I am aware that one or two parents have made the decision to air some issues they currently have surrounding behaviour at Collingwood on social media recently. I would urge those parents to attend the evening. At Collingwood we have great faith in our transparency and believe the collaborative nature of events such as this will be far more beneficial to positive outcomes for all concerned. If you would like to attend please contact Mrs Hough in Barossa Office. We look forward to seeing you there.

BRACKNELL X-COUNTRY RELAY SUCCESS

On Wednesday 2 March 12 students from Collingwood travelled to Lily Hill Park in Bracknell for the invitational X-Country relay. The format was six runners in a team running - Year 9, Year 8, Year 7, Year 7, Year 8 and finally Year 9. The girls were up first and in what can only be described as horrendous conditions they performed magnificently well to finish in 7

th position out of fifteen teams. The route was incredibly wet and

muddy throughout and really tested the girls determination. The boys then took their turn and performed equally well to finish 3

rd out of fifteen teams. I was very

proud of all the students who performed on an incredibly difficult day for running. Team: Jules Rabey, Emily Dillamore, Nicole Sturcke, Katie Wright, Charlotte Stevenson, Kathryn Beckett, Max Duckworth, Toby Mann, Oli Ewing, Giles Rhoden, Luke Mann and Tom Handley.

HISTORY STUDENTS WATCH PRODUCTION OF THE LIFE OF MARTIN LUTHER KING

Last week on Thursday 25 February, the History Department took 49 Year 10 and Year 11 students to see a dramatisation of Martin Luther King’s life at the LOST theatre in London. The show has been performed across 20 different countries in Europe and brought to life the political journey of the once humble preacher. All the students enjoyed seeing the material they had learnt in a dramatic and fast moving style and there is no doubt it will have helped with their understanding of how successful the civil rights movement was in the 1950s and 60s.

CAN YOU HELP?

RAISING FUNDS FOR THE COLLEGE PROJECT IN NICARAGUA 2017

We’re looking to buy a cow and take part in this global event! Our aim is to raise £3500 to purchase a ‘blank’ cow, decorate it (via a professional artist!) and take part in the parade in Surrey Hills. After a few months of ‘touring’ the cows are auctioned and we get 50% of the sales with the other 50% going to Surrey Hills. This is a massive (and unique) opportunity to raise funds and will provide a big boost to the project that will be undertaken by our students. The students who are going to Nicaragua are working hard to raise funds in any way they can – this would be a tremendous boost for them. We would be extremely grateful for donations from any small or large local business plus any individual donations. Parents can donate via ParentPay, businesses please contact Miss Eaton in the first instance ([email protected]). All donations welcome and all will be recognised on the cow! For further details about the Cowparade please click here. Many thanks.
