Last Wednesday lunchtime the Library held two Careers events. In one corner of the library a conference with members of staff from Aldi took place, where students were told all about the career possibilities in the supermarket industry. Students were very keen and asked plenty of questions.

In another area Mr Pettigrew (former parliament member) spoke to students about the strategies of politics and public spending management. Keep an eye out for details about our next workshop…

BASKETBALL NEWS ...

Year 11 Girls’ Basketball The Year 11 team made a great start to the season by beating Woking High 32 – 20. After a slow start the girls worked hard, making a comeback with some excellent offensive work. Holly Davies stole the show with 18 points. She upset the opposition who were unable to stop her drives into the basket. Well done to Holly Davies, Laura Coomasaru, Louise Dugan, Freddie Hempson, Morgan Crouch, Jess Subbiah and Abi Watkin. Year 9 Girls’ Basketball Following on from the last game, the Year 8 girls (who are playing for the Year 9 team) worked really hard to implement some of the new skills they have recently learnt. The majority are new to basketball and they are really improving game by game. Unfortunately they lost again to a strong Woking High team but they really impressed me with their commitment and determination. The final score was 4 - 20. Well done to Maya James, Neha Sandhu, Nicole Sturcke, Tamara Ford, Wendy Li and Jasmine Akbar-Phillips.

YEAR 8 STUDENTS ATTEND SATRO TEENTECH EVENT

On Wednesday 16 November a group of 10 Year 8 students (along with Mrs Walker) attended the TeenTech Surrey event at the University of Surrey, Guildford. Overall, there were 300 students at the event from lots of local schools. We took part in lots of challenges and we were all inspired. We met people from companies that needed more employees with a STEM background. It was an eye-opening day that let us discover career choices that we had never thought about.

First we came up with an idea for a time-saving object and pitched it to our group of around 100 students. We won the award for the best pitch. Then we moved on to all the university challenges. After lunch we met all the companies that might want to employ us in the future.

KS3 BOYS REACH COUNTY BADMINTON FINALS On Wednesday 30 November five of our Key Stage 3 boys played in the District Badminton tournament held at Collingwood. There were five schools in total including Tomlinscote, Woking High, Fullbrook, ISL and ourselves. The format involved five matches against an individual school including both singles and doubles. The boys started out against Fullbrook and after some close games they ran out 3-2 winners. We then went on to play ISL and with the boys confidence increasing they won 5-0 with some excellent Badminton being played. Next up they met a strong Woking High team. The boys played really well and all the games were close but unfortunately they lost 4-1. They finished with a game against Tomlinscote and fought back after their defeat to win the game 3-2 overall. With these District events two teams will always qualify through to the County Finals and the boys were delighted to do this. They will head to Guildford Spectrum on Thursday 9 February to play against all the other qualifying schools. Team: Izaac Mayuga 9D, Imrule Munshi 9I, Leo Attree 9E, Nitin Sivachandra 8K, Kathiir Sivanehru 8H
