Dear HCE Members,When in doubt...what do you do? A recent article Winners Conquer Doubt from the Ohio State Leadership Series is an interesting piece to chew on as we move into a time of uncertainty in so many different aspects of our future - elections, funding, budgets, and life in general. Knowing our goals and mission are so important as we move forward with strong convictions and beliefs. Knowing what we would like in life helps us direct our decisions as we move forward.

Sincerely,Karen DickrellAdvisor to HCEFamily Living Educator and Department Head

Winners Conquer DoubtNot one of us is free of it. We all have moments when we question our ability to succeed and our ability to make good decisions. Why? Because we can’t know the future. Winners feel doubt just as often as anybody else. They understand you have to earn success. They know you can’t be haphazard if you want to make progress toward your most important goals. These truths inevitably lead to questions about their ability to succeed.

If we aren’t on guard, though, those moments can expand and can kill our spirit. They can demoralize. They can give us a faulty perspective. They can distract us and disrupt our forward momentum. They can waste our precious time. The clock is ticking and you can spend your time worrying and doubting or you can spend your time working. When you allow doubt to send you into a tailspin of indecision and hesitation, you invite fear. You grind to a halt. All work stops, and with no work, you have no hope.

2016 Fair BoothWe invite you to exercise your creativity for the 2016 Fair Booth. We decided to use the state’s theme of 76 Trombones Leading HCE.

If you have any ideas or items that can be used in the booth please contact one of the fair booth committee members. What we use for the fair will be used again at the state meeting and for our display at the library during HCE week in November.

Please bring any ideas and/or items to the next fair booth committee meeting on Thursday, July 7 at 9:00 am at the UW-Extension Office. We also will need help setting up at Fair on July 26 at 1:00 pm.

Charity Workshop Picture Perfect DayWe are preparing the donated calendars to be assembled at our Picture Perfect Day on September 21. We know the added preparation will make it easier on picture perfect day.

Bits N PiecesWhile looking thru the history of our club, I found this poem by a deceased member of our club. I remember her when I was a young girl in 4-H and my children were in 4-H and then for years as a member of the Never Idle club.

The homemakers started meeting in the dining room of the old hall at Stephensville in 1925, but did not orgainze Never Idle as a club until September of 1940. Their first lesson was making a foot stool, followed by how to clean a sewing machine, fix a leaky faucet, make dress forms, refinishing furniture, food and canning. Thru the years they had lessons on rug making, that were real heavy and never wore out. Sewing or tailoring clothes, making drapes, making a women's suit from an old man's suit. They made a lot of alumium trays, where you pounded the design in it. Lessons were also given on outdoor cooking, color in the home and meat cookery.

In 1948 at the Wisconsin Centenial which was held at the Achievement Day in Black Creek. Each club make name tags and Margaret Nelson designed Never Idle's name tag in the shape of Wisconsin.

The name tags were judged by a lady from Madison with our club winning and getting a 5lb box of candy. In those days they like to put on hat shows, style shows and entertainment programs.

Things sure have changed, but then again they have not.

What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.

“The year's have passed so swiftly by, at homemaker's for you and I. We all had joined when we were young, to learn something and have some fun. Now 30 years has just passed by many things have been learned by you and I. But best of all, when said and done We're all just first name friends by gum.”

Fundraising Success! Our big fund-raiser in Outagamie County was a quilt raffle, which was held on May 2, 2016. Catholic Financial Life Chapter #188 & #197 pledged $1,500.00 matching funds and challenged us to raise that amount in ticket sales. We surpassed our goal and reached $1,779 .00 by selling 355 books (1,067 tickets). Great job everyone, we knew you could do it.

Thank You to Marcie Suprise, Linda Biese, The Giving Bees, and Dolly Mleziva for donating the prizes and to all HCE members who sold tickets for the raffle. We want to remember our sponsors, Catholic Financial Life Chapter #188, Sharon Reynolds, and Chapter #197 Ruth Biese for supporting Wisconsin Bookworms this year. Both chapters have been a big help to our literacy program by matching funds for our raffles in the past.
