Lan Su Chinese Garden 3
According to legend, the discovery of silk in China began more than 4,500 years ago when Chinese Empress Leizu was drinking tea under a mulberry tree A silkworm cocoon fell into her cup and unraveled, revealing a thread that was both soft yet very strong From this auspicious start, the cultivation of silkworms and the silk they
produced became a major force in Chinese art, manufacturing and trade
Lan Su celebrates this most original of Chinese of art and culture with a series of events and activities centered on silk in June
Live silkworms—See a display of live silkworms and watch as they spin their cocoons and emerge as silk moths!
The history of Silk Talks—Listen to talks on the history of silk and the “Silk Road” which led to the spread
of silk throughout the world
Silk Art Demonstrations—View a series of silk art demonstration featuring hand painted art on 100% silk scarves from artist Cheryl Frances Carmen
Silk Embroidery—Take in a display of traditional and modern silk embroidery art from King Silk Art Each piece is available for sale to enliven your home or office.
The Role of Women in Chinese History —Learn about the role women played in Chinese history with a series of talks and presentations

Artist Exhibition: Shu-Ju WangArtist Shu-Ju Wang presents her work in the garden during the months of May & June
Artist Shu-Ju Wang came to both the United States and her art career by roundabout means Born in Taiwan, she came to the US after her father moved the family to Saudi Arabia and she became an exchange student in California After graduating from Rutgers University in Computer Science, she moved to Portland and began working in the high tech industry After several years, she found her calling as an artist and has been creating ever since
Her show in Lan Su features a variety of media that is personal, intimate, small scale, and draws from a variety of inspirations including the Chinese gongbi style
This exhibition made possible by support from the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation.

One of China’s most revered plants, the peony is China’s unofficial national flower. First used medicinally, by the 7th century its flowers were a favorite subject of Chinese poets and painters as a symbol of honor, wealth, and rank By the 11th century, its popularity was widespread and more than 100 cultivars had been developed With large, lush blooms, it’s easy to understand why China considers the peony, “King of Flowers”
