The Summer Meeting provides members with the op-portunity to visit socially and welcome new members to the association. Friday night’s Welcome Reception not only served as the gathering place for members to create new business opportunities with our Associ-

ate Member Exhibitors but also was this year’s kick-off to Saturday’s General Session and Membership Meeting. The Welcome Reception and BBQ provides a venue for members to unwind and socialize after

attending com-mittee meetings or spending the day exploring the Excelsior Springs/Kansas City area.

We had a great time get-ting to know new members and it’s always an exciting time when

visiting with long-standing members.

This year the Friday evening plans took an unexpected turn when Shannon Cooper pre-sented Brian with a new pair of fancy shoes.

We always enjoy spending time with our members and for a good time to be had by all.

Our invited guest speakers engaged members during Saturday’s General Session portion of the Summer Meeting by providing information on various timely topicsPresentations included:“How We Are Perfect and Get Better” by Dr. Gene Wengert, President of The Wood Doctor Rx, LLC

“Promoting American Hardwoods” by Michael Snow, Executive Director of the American Hardwood Export Council.

“Loggers: An Endangered Species or Just Threat-ened?” by Don Peterson, Executive Director of Renew-able Resource Solutions.

“Is Exporting Right For You?” by Kayla Otto, Market-ing Specialist II, and Brenda Verslues, Domestic and International Marketing Manager, Missouri Department of Agriculture.

“Interested Buyer. Sale is Made. Now What?” by Marc Van Gorp, Export Manager, Laufer Group International

“2016 Legislative Wrap Up” by Con-gressman Blaine Luetkemeyer, District 3.

Lunch was served to a full room of members at The Membership Busi-ness Meeting. Executive Director, Brian Brookshire gave updates on MFPA activities and introduced new MFPA members that were in attendance at the Summer

Meeting. Brian also announced winners of the door prize raffles and drew the winner of the Missouri Forest Products PAC Raffle. MFPA’s President Kevin Conner was the lucky winner of the Henry Golden Boy .22 Long Rifle with the MFPA logo laser etched into the stock! Thanks to all who purchased raffle tickets raising $4225 for the PAC!

CERTIFICATION & EDUCATION

It was a great MFPA Summer Meeting, but it was even better for Log A Load for Kids. Thursday was the annual Golf Tournament. After a shuttle ride from The Elms, almost 20 golfers teed up to play the Excel-sior Springs Golf Course. Amid some pars, and some birdies, everyone had a good time. At the end of the day, 5 over par was the winning score by Travis Yake and Bill Merical. The golfers got together back at The Elms to relive the best shots of the day,

lament over missed putts, and plan for next year’s tournament.

Saturday, during the MFPA Membership luncheon, Log A Load for Kids was again prominent. The success of Log A Load is re-ally because of everyone’s willingness to help. Awards were given this year recognizing corporate effort and individual effort. Rod McGinnis accepted the Industry Recogni-tion. McGinnis Wood Products regularly donates truck loads to the charity, and has for the past several years. Bill Merical was recognized for Individual effort.

Bill has worked with MFPA staff on the develop-ment of several new programs to benefit Log A Load, including the 50/50 drawing. After months of building up to the big drawing, it was finally time. Chris Harbison’s ticket was cho-sen. Chris chose to donate his winnings back to Log A Load. That means there will be a huge donation given this year to the University of Missouri Children’s Hospital.

Sunday was another golf out-ing. Despite the rain delay, it was another fun day on a challenging course. Don McGinnis and Tim Etter were Sunday’s winners. All the golf winners will receive an MFPA logo golf shirt. A big thank you to Don, Tim, Travis, Bill and Rod. Huge thanks to Chris Harbison. We couldn’t do this without all of you. Thank you!

MFPA and the Missouri Logging Council are excited to bring you a new bumper sticker. Loggers are highly skilled professionals that take on a tough and dangerous job. We all need loggers – what they do touch our lives daily in the products and ecosystem services their work provides. They’ve touched all the trees that bring wood and paper products into our homes, schools, and offices. They’re the key to restoring unhealthy, overcrowded forests. They’re essential to managing forests sustainably. They’re valuable members of local communities. Yet, they are all too often underappreciated and misrepresented. What they do and how they do it is frequently misunderstood. And with the workforce aging, we need an upcoming generation of capable, conscientious loggers. We have collaborated with the Idaho Forest Products Commission and the American Logger Council on the stickers to show support and appreciation for our loggers. It’s also a great way to start a positive conversation about the good things loggers do, and maybe even encourage some young people to consider becoming logger as a viable career option. Or, it may just be a good looking bumper sticker. The stickers are $5, with a portion going to Log A Load for Kids. You can order your stickers by calling the MFPA office, (573) 634-3252, or e-mailing [email protected].
