WE DID IT!!! We received our FIRST PLACE in Endowment Fund Competition for the Loyalty Division. We were #3 in total giving and #4 in per capita giving throughout the entire fraternity. See all the results later in this bulletin. GREAT JOB to our members and leadership team. We also received the Fraternal Service Award!! It has been a while since we earned this award. We need to work hard to earn the Fraternal Service Award again this year. We have to increase Endowment Giving over last year. Our Goal is to be #1 in per capita. In order to do this we need to reach the $20 per member level. We have the special $20 Endowment Gift program for 2016-2017 with Honor Roll recognition. This is in addition to your normal endowment giving. This year we are keeping an updated Honor Roll on the website. YES, we have a website at legion15.moosepages.org. I am keeping this updated with upcoming events, the updated honor roll, current news stories. This is a place to look up current information about our Moose Legion. If you have not received an email from me it is because you never gave us one or the one we have is invalid. Send an email to [email protected] requesting to be added and we will add you to the email distribution list. I am sending out periodic emails between bulletins to keep members up to date on current activities and news items. There are times that we need to communicate with our members between bulletins and this is the fastest and most economical way! We need to continue our retention and recovery efforts for our Moose Legion and lodges. We also need to continue to elevate qualified Moose Members to the Moose Legion, the Degree of Service. A common thread as to why long time moose members are not Moose Legionnaires is that nobody ever asked them to join and elevate their membership. Let’s all find 2 people to elevate this year to the Moose Legion. I will continue to try to lead by example. Not only in our Moose Legion, but also OUR Moose Legion in the Fraternity. Thank you for all you do and I hope to see you at our celebrations and functions. Remember our 2-Day Poker Run supporting the Moosehaven Centennial Project and our Endowment Giving on August 27th and 28th. The flyer is included in this bulletin and information is on our website. Fraternally, Derrick Morris Golden Spot 15 President 2016-2017 Cell: 831-970-5562 Email: [email protected]

May Message from Danny Williams WOW we are starting a NEW Moose year! Let’s all start to “Raise the Roof” to a NEW positive year! Let’s do our RRR- “Retention, Recovery and Re-activation” each and every month. Let us all work harder on a monthly basis and not wait until the end of the Moose year in April 2017. Retention through personal contact works and we have proven this year that it does work.

My year has 1 1/2 more months to go (at this writing) and we have some loose ends. Moose Legion Youth Awareness obligations for 2015 – 2016 should have been paid by March 31, but not all were posted even at the end of April. Also, your Endowment Funds should be sent in to Moose Charities by the 15th of each and every month as a minimum. On a positive note; every Moose Legion had their Camp Ross Project obligation paid in full by March 31. “Congratulations” on this achievement.

My pet project “Mooseheart Recreation Center – Exercise Room Flooring” has raised the $30,000.00 needed by March 31, 2016. I’m still auctioning off “Shawn Baile’s Exercise Balls” on my visitations to our jurisdictions with all proceeds going toward my pet project. We have had fun with them all year and will have some exciting news to share in St. Louis. With your help maybe we can reach ten grand over the pledge?

When visiting in Arizona, as the guest of Thunderbird Moose Legion #213 and Yuma Moose Lodge, Moose Legionnaire Joseph J. Surace and wife had the winning bid of $1,300.00. Moose Legionnaire Robert G. Zeidler and wife approached me and asked for a photo of me with the photo of Shawn and his Exercise Balls and they donated $1,000.00 toward my pet project for just posing for this photo. What wonderfully generous members we have! The following week I traveled to Sunnyvale, California as a guest for Golden Spot Moose Legion #15 for their Awards program. They chose to have an unusual and effective type of auction. They were determined to beat the $1,300.00 of the previous week and they sure did – by the tune of $1,676.00. The winner this time was Bob Oneto.

Please attend the Moose Legion Breakfast on Friday, July 1st, 2016 at the 50th International Moose Legion Conference held in conjunction with the 128th International Moose Convention being held in St. Louis, MO. You will hear the totals of this project and all other projects and the bottom line we raised from “Shawn’s Exercise Balls” Auctions. If you would like to donate to this project, you still can until the end of this coming conference/convention in St. Louis, MO.

Also, we will have three Moose Legion Topical Sessions. They will be Friday afternoon and then Sunday Morning. Our Ritual Competition will take place Friday and Saturday. The top finishers will be announced at a luncheon in their honor on Monday. Order your tickets for these events and join us!

What an enjoyable and unforgettable year this has been! My wife Beryl and I enjoyed each and every visit to your Moose Legion jurisdictions. Many thanks to all who helped me in so many ways to achieve my personal goals.

Now let’s “Raise the Roof” in support of our children at Mooseheart, our seniors at Moosehaven and our communities during our current “Raise the Roof – Membership Campaign” year – May 1, 2016 thru April 30, 2017! It is supporting these goals that truly make our members and fraternity so special and wonderful.

Isn’t it GREAT to be a Moose and a PROUD Moose Legionnaire!

Fraternally, Danny Williams, Sr. International Moose Legion 2015-2016 President

Greetings Moose Legionaires, At the present time, we have 367 active Moose Legion members on the rolls. We lost 15 at the end of June, so I know that number will change. Let’s get them back and keep them for the kids and seniors. As you will hear, Golden Spot 15 is doing pretty well. We got several awards at St. Louis at the International Moose convention. We should be proud of our accomplishments and work towards greater things next year. One thing we are doing again this year is the $20.00 Endowment Challenge. It got us 1st place in the Loyalty division last year and there is no reason we can’t do it again this year. Let’s just see if we can’t break last year’s record,ok!

We are still looking at fun things to do this year. Got any ideas? Let one of the Directors know and we shall see what we can do. Perry James, Secretary

Congratulations To:

Sunnyvale, Pacifica and Monterey Lodges for achieving their Premier Lodge Award for the 2015-2016 campaign. This was an outstanding job well done.

Rusty White, Fraternal Director and to all members who donated to the Endowment Fund, Honor Roll and other Moose Legion functions to help us obtain 1st place in the Loyalty Division. We had a per capita total of $15.10 per member, which is awesome.

Perry James, Secretary who led the way for us to earn the “Fraternal Service Award”. This is awarded for detail in Reporting, increasing Endowment Funding, increasing Membership and reduction of Expired Members. Perry’s work was exemplary.

Chuck Barber, Intl Moose Legion Ambassador who was selected as one of (5) finalists for Intl Moose Legion Ambassador of the Year. Chuck took 2nd place, which is an honor.

Jack Shomberg (SV Lodge) and Eugene Bustichi (Santa Cruz) upon receiving their Degree of Fellowship. Much Lodge/Legion activity goes towards achieving this award.

Derrick Morris, President who was appointed to the Moose International “Heart of the Community”Committee for 2016-2018.

Membership Building Committee The 3-R’s were mentioned (Retention, Recovery and Reactivation). It is incumbent upon each of us to make personal calls to retain our Legion members, make personal contacts to recover some of those who have slipped away and re-activate expired members to bring them current again. It was pointed out we have lost thousands of members over the past few years and everything must be done to stem the tide.

I would like to extend our incentive award for GS #15 members again during the next 3 months. Sign up (2) new Legionnaires or Re-enrollee’s during the quarter (August – October) and you will receive (1) years paid dues for yourself. This is not difficult to accomplish and everyone is a winner. You should contact (new members) in your lodges as they are eligible after 6 months or when they have sponsored (1) new member themselves. Fraternally, Alan Childs, Vice President GS #15 Moose Legion

I would like to thank all in advance for your support in letting me know of all legionaries, Fellows or Pilgrims, who are sick or in distress. This helps me to keep in contact with them and letting them know we do care.

I have only one at this time that was reported to me, and that was Bother Fellow Lowell Gresham who passed away last month. He was a member of Sunnyvale. All our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife Margie and family may he rest in peace.

Fraternally and in friendship. Pilgrim Brother Mike Martin Chaplain Golden Spot Moose legion #15

The 3-R’s – What’s that?

What happens to those members who do not understand our fraternal causes and have not bought into our fraternal program by the time they get their dues renewal notice? Well, sometimes they do not immediately renew as we would hope.

That is when we need to work the 3-R’s. Yes, I said the 3-R’s, which is a concept of Retention, Recovery and active status Reactivation. It is kind of like body building. A great physique and strong muscles do not just happen. One has to work at it over time and develop the desired outcome.

The Moose is not so different. Retention involves a lot of things we do, or should do, on a regular ongoing basis that keeps the members interested and involved. How we treat them, what kind of surroundings and conditions do they see when they enter our lodge homes and events? Do we provide attractive friendly programs geared to their interest? Do we provide fun wholesome activities for them to enjoy or do we just have meetings and go home?

It means providing some form or forms of communication that brings awareness of the member benefits, social opportunities, and positive Heart of the Community programs that we do to take pride in as a member of our fraternal unit. Fulfilling our own pledges we made when joining as members and those we took as an officer coupled with treating others as we would want to be treated could go a long way.

Even then, some members will slide into expired status. We must reach out to contact them in a pleasant way to remind them of the good we do, the benefits we have and how important they are to our program. We have a group of members, men and women who should be perfect to assist in this area. (continued )

July Message from Bob Neff (continued)

They make up the Councils of Higher Degrees. The Councils should be called upon to assist our fraternal units. Some of their members have both extensive knowledge of the fraternity as well as expertise in talking to members. Working those attributes together can have positive results.

Our Councils of Higher Degrees often do well raising money for association projects and for Moose Charities. But the real goal and the real need is to involve them in saving our base of Chapter, Lodge and Moose Legion members.

When you invite the Council in to assist they should be working on the newly expired members. Those recently expired members are not eligible to be sponsored, just eligible to renew and pay dues once again into your fraternal unit. I encourage you to call on and use this resource. Why would you not do so?

And by the way – those of us who hold membership in the Moose Legion have for the past few years been eligible to join the Councils. Have you done so? Have you become involved in helping with the retention efforts? We should be helping lead that charge as the “men who make things happen” and “who get things done”! After all, we are the Degree of Service and Leadership!

As we concluded our convention address on the floor at St Louis we left with these parting thoughts: I offered this quote from St Francis of Assisi who said: “Remember that when you leave this earth, you can take with you nothing that you have received, only what you have given: a full heart, enriched by honest service, love, sacrifice and courage.”

The Moose Legion is the Degree of Service. Our pride demonstrates the love of our fraternity. Our service exemplifies sacrifices to our fraternal cause. Courage is demonstrated by simple acts of doing what is good and right for all, regardless of the popularity of so doing.

And finally I offer this thought taken from a Junior College student commencement speaker I recently heard. He walked across the stage to the podium with a walker due to a muscular disease he suffers from. In his talk he challenged the group to strive to set goals and work to accomplish them in life. He indicated we will all have jobs in life but ended stating a challenge to all saying; “Don’t just do your job – Make a difference.”

Quite a statement for a young man inflicted with a condition making it hard to just walk. But what a positive outlook to enter life’s journey with such a great upbeat attitude.

No doubt he will make difference. I challenge you to roll up your sleeves and follow that lead and make a difference in all you do through the Loyal Order of Moose. Our students, our seniors, our communities and our fellow members are indeed counting on each of us and our collective ability to work together and excel in Raising the Roof of positive fraternal achievement.

May each of us follow that suggested lead and challenge of that young man; “Don’t just do your job – Make a difference!” God Bless you and thank you for all you do for the Moose Legion and in service to this fraternity.

Fraternally, Robert A. Neff, Director Ritual, Moose Legion & Higher Degrees

Greetings Legionnaires and Ladies,

I’m writing this Article at the last minute, as I was waiting for the results from the International Convention in St. Louis, Mo.

While waiting, I received an email from Rick Dandridge, International Moose Legion Ambassador for our Moose Legion Jurisdiction congratulating us on a job well done. Not only did we again take 1st place in our Division Loyalty, but we Golden Spot #15 donated $5,496.07 to Moose Charities for the Mooseheart / Moosehaven Endowment Fund, which is $15.10 per person on the roll.

On top of all, we received the Fraternal Service Award……Congratulations Perry James, Golden Spot #15 Moose Legion Secretary and all you Members who sponsored a new member, and worked on Retention (Reducing Expired Members), and a very big thank you to all who made donations to the Endowment Fund. I am very proud of you all! Again it just proves the Moose saying….. A job/burden heavy to one is born lightly to many……thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!

We are now officially kicking off the fund raising for the Mooseheart / Moosehaven Endowment Fund for this New Year 2016-2017. Anyone wishing to donate $20.00 or more will again have their name placed on the Honor Roll, to be on the web page and displayed at the Moose Legion Awards Dinner in April for all to see.

Please make all checks payable to Moose Legion Golden Spot #15, and please earmark for Mooseheart/Moosehaven Endowment Fund, and mail it to:

Moose Legion Golden Spot #15 P.O Box 24795 San Jose, Ca 95154-4795

You can also give them to any Moose Legion Officer/Director as follows: Derrick Morris, President Alan Childs, Vice President Mike Martin, Chaplain Perry James, Secretary Howard ‘Rusty’ White, Fraternal Director

Thank you again for all you do!!!!!
