The unique aspect of this fundraiser is its Ambassadors - our clients. Before the event, participants were able to learn a little about them through the WWM website, and then meet them on the Walk. As Candice Barnes, Channel Nine weather presenter and our fantastic MC explained: Walk with Me brings together people of all abilities in our community, helps to raise much-needed funds and, most importantly, helps break down the barriers to understanding people living with disabilities. After the walk, participants enjoyed a bbq, with entertainment by a wonderfully quirky magician. The total raised was over $13,000, which will go towards our respite program. This program provides time out for those whose lives are given to caring for family members living with a disability. Congratulations to the highest fundraisers, Joshua and Thomas Molloy, who raised $2,276. Thanks to Ambassadors, Logan Bailey and William Scullard; Rocky Bay residents, Lisa Cairnes, Mal Burgess and Darryl Rice News&Events who had enormous support from our community and students of St Hilda’s Anglican Junior School. Special thanks to sponsors Neverfail, Shelta, Dilmah Tea and Blake Dawson. During the school holidays, a thank-you morning tea and pool party was held for over 30 people including siblings, mums and dads. All joined in the fun and games and enjoyed lots of party food. 2011 has been an interesting year to be involved with the Community sector in Western Australia and we, (our clients and staff) are privileged to have a voice within the sector. As a long established and respected organisation, Rocky Bay has been included in many government discussions both at a Federal and State level which have, and will continue to have, an impact on organisations such as ourselves.

We have also had several projects underway this year and it’s been very rewarding to see many of them reach completion.

The Lucy Creeth ResidenceRedevelopment was completed last year. Further

improvements have continued this year in both the physical infrastructure and in the way we operate the residence. We now have a contemporary home with a “home” environment for the residents which will continue to improve over time.

Patricia Kailis CentreAfter its opening in 2010, the Patricia Kailis

Centre (PKC), at 13 Baling Street, Cockburn Central now provides a modern and contemporary facility for clients and families. The venue now houses the School Aged Therapy Services (SATS), Employment Services and the Posture Tech seating and equipment modification programs.

The new facility provides our teams with a central location within the region where families can bring their children to participate in therapy assessments; meet other families for support; and meet with therapists to discuss their child’s

progress and development. This has already given a sense of “belonging” to families who feel more supported by Rocky Bay.

Additional homes to McCabe Street The development of 15 living units at 64 McCabe

Street progressed further with the amalgamation of the entire front verge now achieved. In January 2011 planning commenced with the architects and the Department of Housing with building to commence early in 2012. This will be an exciting project and I look forward to the opportunities it will provide both for Rocky Bay and our clients.

We are most fortunate to have the support of many organisations and individuals throughout the community who assist Rocky Bay in a myriad of different ways. Whether as a corporate sponsor, volunteer, client, staff member or in any other capacity, all play an essential part in the effective operation of the organisation and we thank you for your valuable and outstanding support.

I, along with the Board and Executive of Rocky Bay, would like to take this opportunity to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a happy and safe New Year and look forward to a rewarding and exciting 2012.

With kind regards,

Michael TaitCEO

SENATOR MCLUCAS VISITS ROCKY BAY

Page 3

Rocky Bay was pleased to welcome Federal Senator Jan McLucas, Parliamentary Secretary for Disability and Carers to our Mosman Park facility.

Senator McLucas visited us while here for CHOGM. She chose Rocky Bay because of our involvement with the Better Start program.

Senator McLucas is committed to providing children with developmental disabilities and their carers access to intensive early intervention services. The Better Start for Children with Disability initiative is available to children under six years of age who have been diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome or vision and hearing impairment.

It offers a range of services including access to new Medicare items for development of treatment and management plans, and support for up to four allied health diagnostic services to assist

in preparing the plan. It also provides for up to 20 allied health services for children aged up to 15 and $12,000 in funding for early intervention services and treatments.

The increased access to targeted early intervention in the pre-school years is intended to complement existing government services and to assist children to have the best possible preparation for the transition to school.

Eligible children are registered before their sixth birthday and families have until their child turns seven to use the early intervention funding for services by professionals who are members of the Better Start Early Intervention Service Provider Panel.

Through Rocky Bay’s Wishing Tree Committee, Terry Fleming was successful in obtaining funds to grant a long held desire, to ride in a limo and wear a tuxedo for his birthday.

Terry got suited up in a customized black tuxedo, complete with a British Racing Green bowtie, courtesy of Ferrari Formalwear in Fremantle. He accessorised with aviator sunglasses and two support workers as his companions for the evening.

Terry and his entourage boarded an All Star Hire wheelchair accessible “limo bus”, equipped with a mini bar and two plasma TVs. They enjoyed champagne and karaoke before arriving at their destination for the evening, the Pines Restaurant in Observation City.

Terry says “it was fantastic and the girls looked lovely.”

Rocky Bay sadly said farewell to Caroline Cusack who passed

away in September. Caroline was a Rocky Bay client, staff member,

committee member and Councillor. Throughout her life, she worked tirelessly to improve the quality of life for clients at Rocky Bay. She was highly respected by clients, staff and colleagues alike, and her sense of humour was matched only by her cheerful and encouraging manner.

As CEO Michael Tait said, “Caroline touched so many people during her life with her wisdom, generosity of spirit and warmth. We will miss her innate ability to understand people and difficult issues and her intuitive and philosophical nature – Rocky Bay will be weaker by her going but we have all been made stronger by knowing her.”

She was educated at Yaringa Primary School (a ‘special’ school attached to Lucy Creeth Hospital) and she first joined the clinical program in 1966. After completing high school, Caroline was employed at Rocky Bay as a Clerk/Typist. She also worked with kindergarten children in a voluntary capacity for three years.

Between 1979 and 1990 Caroline lived at Rocky

Bay on a full time basis, before moving to her home in North Fremantle. She was a founding member of the Residents’ Committee, a position that enabled her to improve the living environment for clients on-site at Rocky Bay.

In 1993 she joined the Rocky Bay Council and provided exceptionally wise guidance, particularly on client issues. Caroline was a member of two important subcommittees - the Client Services Committee, where she was an outstanding advocate for clients; and the Programs, Policy and Practice Committee – which looked at the infrastructure that supports the programs at Rocky Bay.

Caroline’s input into this Committee was of the highest order with her advice and knowledge of client issues ensuring that Rocky Bay has quality policies and programs in place that meet client needs.

Caroline was made a life member of Rocky Bay in 2000 for her exceptional contribution to Rocky Bay and she was a most worthy recipient of this honour. She will be sorely missed!

Getabout was successful in receiving a grant for a Duet Bike. Imported from the USA, this bike is a rarity in W.A!

The bike will allow people living with complex physical needs to experience the joy of bike riding.

We love that the bike allows people to sit up front where they can view the scenery and still travel in safety!

Volunteering benefits all! What better way to connect with your

community, improve the wellbeing of others, meet new and interesting people with different skills and abilities, and have a lot of fun at the same time.

Rocky Bay thanks Bankwest, Woodside and HBF for their contribution to improving the quality of life for people living with disabilities.

Spring saw the residents at 62 McCabe Street welcome 10 employees from the Executive Finance Team at Bankwest who arrived full of energy, ready to take on a garden tidy-up project.

During the afternoon the Bankwest team tackled the overgrown weeds, pruned shrubs, pressure cleaned the courtyards and moved mountains of mulch. The residents now have a refreshing outdoor area to enjoy during the warmer months.

AFL Grand Final celebrations were in full swing when 16 Woodside employees and Ashley Prescott, Development Coach from Fremantle Football Club volunteered to help at Rocky Bay’s annual grand final lunch.

The Woodside team prepared salads for lunch and kept everyone entertained with a footy quiz and hand-ball competition. Ashley Prescott kindly assisted and shared his expertise with those who had a shot at the hand-ball competition.

With the help of 10 HBF employees, our Melbourne Cup luncheon was enjoyed by Rocky Bay clients and staff. The HBF team decorated the dining room, with wonderful graphics prepared by St Hilda’s girls, prepared and served lunch then and judged the best hat competition.

If you are interested in volunteering, please call Jenny Styles on 9383 5135.

Sky diving is not a sport for the faint-hearted, even if they are fully mobile, but Rocky Bay staff were amazed when a young client’s with Friedreich’s Ataxia, Zak Giannopoulos, took to the skies recently.

Sixteen year old Zak and Callum Johnson, a Rocky Bay OT jumped from a plane 14,000ft over Jurien Bay, landing safely on the beach some 6-7 minutes later.

This is an amazing effort by someone who is dependent on a manual wheelchair for mobility.

Friedreich’s Ataxia is an inherited condition that causes progressive damage to the nervous system resulting in symptoms ranging from muscle weakness and speech problems to heart disease.

Ataxia results from the degeneration of nerve tissue in the spinal cord and of nerves that control muscle movement in the arms and legs.

Zak used the event to raise funds for research into Friedreich’s Ataxia.

ROCKY BAY DISCOS PROVE VERY POPULAR

Page 6

Held monthly at Rocky Bay in McCabe Street, the themed discos have proved very popular with clients and staff alike.

UP, UP AND AWAY!

Most dress up - many unrecognisable but for the huge smiles on their faces as they dance to DJ Dan’s music. Other service providers have attended and enjoyed the fun and laughter.

The recent Spooky Night theme was a case in point - just recognisable are Mal and Lisa under their face paint and costumes!

Staff make the props and our talented Debora Gomides, from Getabout has the artistic flair to design them.

MODEL & LITTLE AUSSIE - NOT JUST A PRETTY FACE

Rocky Bay’s Model of the Future and Little Aussie competitions are more than just fashion parades. Competitors are asked to raise funds for Rocky Bay with the two events raising over $47,500 between them this year.

These events have been running for close to 20 years, with many little Aussies going on to enter Model of the Future.

Little Aussie competition is held in metropolitan shopping centres, while Model of the Future heats this year are held at Rocky Bay.

Photographic Model of the Future this year was Lauren Haynes from Albany. Lauren has already flown to New York for a photo shoot and is a Miss Universe WA hopeful.

EMPLOYMENT SERVICES SUCCESS WITH ANNALAKSHMI

Annalakshmi is an Indian vegetarian restaurant situated at the Barrack Street Jetty. It is a not-for profit organisation with the motto ‘Eat till your heart’s content and pay what your heart feels’. The restaurant is staffed by a team of very dedicated volunteers.

Annalakshmi approached Rocky Bay Employment Services at the start of this year as they were interested in employing our clients to help manage their busy weekday lunch times. It worked so well that the clients doing work experience and now have jobs there. They are the only paid staff at the restaurant.

Annalakshmi initially employed four of our job seekers. Their duties are varied and involve cleaning and customer service and cleaning. Annalakshmi were so impressed with their new employees they are employing three more.

The Director, Arun Kumar Natarajan, is very supportive of his staff and is under-standing of their needs. He appreciates the work that they do and as an extra thank you, gives them lunch for

free on the days they work. Arun has also generously offered Employment

Services the use of his restaurant for the client Christmas Party this year.

If you are interested in employing a Rocky Bay client, please call Linda Benbow on 6399 4174.
