A Saskatchewan delegation led by Canora-Pelly area MP and Deputy Premier Ken Krawetz recently concluded a mission to Ukraine which was highlighted by the signing of an educational agreement, discussions with the business and investment com-munities, meetings with the heads of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic and Orthodox Church-es and political leaders from across Ukraine. The delegation, comprised of representatives from Saskatch-ewan Institute of Applied Sci-ence and Technology (SIAST) and members of the Saskatch-ewan-Ukraine Relations Ad-visory Committee (SURAC), Ukrainian Canadian Congress – Saskatchewan Provincial Council (UCC-SPC) made stops in Lviv, Chernivsti, Ivano-Frankivsk, Kyiv and Donetsk. The mission builds on work completed on two other visits by Saskatchewan delegations in 2008 and 2010. “Saskatchewan and Ukraine have strong historical and cul-tural ties and are working to build a more robust economic relationship.” Krawetz says. “These visits allow us to better understand how Saskatchewan can play a role in the ongoing development of Ukraine.”

SIAST President Larry Rosea took part in the mis-sion, as SIAST has established partnerships with tech-nical institutes in Lviv, Kyiv and Ivano-Frankivsk. Krawetz said SIAST is helping Ukrainian Institutions strengthen governance structures. The institutions and SIAST began a partnership in 2009 to provide a ser-vice to Canadian employers and potential newcomers by ensuring that the technical and language skills of the potential newcomers match needs in the Canadian labour market. The delegation met with more than 45 business and investment leaders in Lviv and Kyiv to learn fi rst-hand the challenges and opportunities for Saskatch-ewan companies. Krawetz also addressed the Canada-Ukraine Chamber of Commerce stressing importance of the small-medium enterprise sector in building the Ukrainian economy. He also emphasized the impor-tance of further cooperation with the European Union to develop key market areas, and the signifi cance of concluding the proposed free trade agreement with Canada to expand the opportunities for future growth. The delegation also paid its respects to the victims and survivors of the Holodomor at the memorial in Kyiv. “Saskatchewan is the fi rst province to recognize the Holodomor,” Krawetz says. “As we commemorate in November the 80th anniversary of this tragedy, it is critical that we refl ect and remember those who experi-enced this horrifi c event.”

In the U.S. today, more than 246 million people suffer from diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes has tri-pled in the last 10 years. This is a lifestyle disease caused by diet and other habits. One factor, for example, is that the aver-age American consumes 150 pounds of sugar per year! Tragically, the sta-tistics predict that 1 out of 3 children born after the year 2000 will get diabetes! The remarkable infor-mation that I will discuss today is based on a very intriguing documentary called “Simply Raw – Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days”. (See www.raw-for30days.com ). This film features 6 Americans with diabetes, who agreed to change their diet for 30 days. They each travelled to The Tree of Life Rejuvenation Center in Arizona. For 30 days, they ate three buffet-style vegan, organic, raw food meals

daily. No meat, dairy, sugar, caffeine, soda, junk food, fast food, pro-cessed or packaged food, or even cooked food was served. Alcohol and nico-tine are not allowed. They were supervised by a medical doctor for the entire time. The results are truly astounding! Kirt, 26, had Type 1 Diabetes. When diag-nosed, his blood sugar was at 1200! (It should normally be between 80 and 100). Kirt stopped all medications. By Week 4, his blood sugar dropped 214 points down to as low as 73, without medi-cation. His total choles-terol also dropped from

216 to 160. Two months later, new lab results showed that Kirt’s blood sugar was completely normal without medica-tion! Bill, 58, had Type 2

Diabetes. He discontin-ued 19 medications and lost 32 pounds! By Week 4, his blood sugar dropped 219 points, down to as low as 74, without medi-cation. His final blood test results were all nor-mal! Michelle, 36, had Type 2 Diabetes. Raised by her grandmother, she ate whatever she wanted, which was mainly des-serts. Michelle also went off all her medications and lost 23 pounds.

By Week 4, her blood sugar dropped 291 points down to 109, without medication. Her total cholesterol dropped from 237 to 171. Pam, 62, had Type 2 Diabetes. Pam also stopped all her medica-tions and lost 26 pounds. By Week 4, her blood sugar dropped 167 points, down to as low as 112, without medication. On Day 1, her blood pressure was 135/76. On Day 30, it was 120/64. She felt really good! Austin, 25, had Type 1 Diabetes. He lost 20 pounds and lowered his blood pressure. Austin dropped from 70 units of insulin per day, down to 5 units per day! He said: “This month has been really great for my body! I think my body has really been healed a lot. From what I see after this month, I’d see this as a potential cure for Type 1.” Henry, 68, had Type 2 Diabetes. He chose to leave on Day 17, since he no longer wanted to con-tinue the program.

However, he went off 17 medications, lost 30 pounds and dramatically decreased his blood pres-sure. His blood sugar on Day 1, with medication, was 450. On Day 17, without medication, it was 200!At the end of the film, the following informa-tion is displayed: “If you are on insulin or oral hypoglycemics, do not try this approach without medical super-vision. Melanoma survivor Kendra Roach wears her skin cancer scar as a “badge of honour”. However, she’s less than impressed with her other scars from more than a dozen biopsies that came back benign.

“I have a red welt on my chest that will be visible on my wedding day,” she says, “and it’s also emotionally scar-ring.” Roach adds that she has now learned about a new technology that can detect skin can-cer by a light ray rather than a knife slice. She also knows early detec-tion is key. Patients have a 99 per cent chance of survival when melanoma is diagnosed early; in late stages, it falls to 15 per cent.

Roach, 23, has become a sort of expert on skin excisions since getting her first biopsy at the age of 13. With a healthy covering of moles and a past love of tanning, she is a recipe for high-risk. Ever since, she’s had close to 20 moles removed and reviewed. All came back benign, except one last summer.

She was driving and happened to look down at her leg where she was surprised to see a new mole. Sitting behind the wheel, both traffic and time stopped.

“It showed up almost overnight and just didn’t seem right,” she explains. “It looked like a little dark mole, a bit raised, and it didn’t have unusu-al borders or discolour-ing.”

Roach had the full area removed.

She says she recently experienced a new diag-nostic device called Verisante Aura (veri-sante.com/aura). It uses a light ray to help medi-cal professionals make a biopsy decision in under a second. The tool, now available in Canada, was developed through part-nerships with the BC Cancer Agency, Vancouver Coastal Health Research Institute, and the

University of British Columbia over a 10-year period. Testing for the device took place at the Skin Care Centre at Vancouver General Hospital over a six-year clinical study. The results published last year in a peer-reviewed journal showed that the tool had a 99 per cent success rate of finding skin cancer and the potential to reduce unnecessary biopsies by 50 to 100 per cent.

“There were a lot of

moles on my face and other places where I didn’t want to have a scar,” adds Roach. “The device quickly identified them as benign and gave me peace of mind.” This new technology was able to measure lesions even on the side of her little finger because of its small probe that enables access to hard-to-reach areas of the human body.

Biopsies are invasive, time consuming and sometimes unwarranted,

says Dr. Sheetal Sapra, an Oakville dermatolo-gist who is using the device on patients. “Aura represents a paradigm shift by being the first device that provides an objective measurement,” the doctor points out. “It can help automate the current process of diag-nosis by allowing rapid and accurate scanning of multiple skin lesions at a time while improving patient care.”

damaged.“It is important for home-

owners to go over their insur-ance policy yearly with a repre-sentative,” adds Jenner. “This will make sure you have the coverage you need.”
