During my Event Planning public relations class, I was tasked with planning the first annual National News Engagement Day event on the University of Maryland campus. I wrote this press release about the event and sent it to local news sources, both on the UMD campus and within the local community.

  • University of Maryland makes news a priority with Maryland Makes History event Students make news and history to celebrate first annual National News Engagement Day COLLEGE PARK, Md. University of Maryland students will host Maryland Makes History to honor the first annual National News Engagement Day from 12-3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 7 on McKeldin Mall. The Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC) is launching National News Engagement Day across the U.S. to bring attention to the importance of news in our society, said Elizabeth L. Toth, AEJMC President and Professor and Chair, Department of Communication, University of Maryland. National News Engagement Day is an initiative of Paula Poindexter, AEJMCs former president. Maryland Makes History, a collaborative effort between the universitys Department of Communication and the Philip Merrill College of Journalism, will give students, staff and community members the opportunity to make news and history on Marylands campus. AEJMC is thrilled with the Maryland Makes History event that showcases the importance of news to university students, said Toth. Event highlights include: Read results of Millennials and News Engagement Survey in our campus newspaper, The Diamondback; Walk through news walls made of historical front pages donated by the Newseum; Engage with social media using our hashtag, #MakeNewsUMD Take a photo with your face inside The Diamondback and national newspapers; Meet representatives from C-SPANs Big Ten Bus Enter for a chance to win a gift card to the UMD bookstore; Be a part of a freeze mob photo-opportunity while reading The Diamondback at 2:30 p.m. on McKeldin Mall with hundreds of UMD staff, students and visitors Learn more at ter.ps/MakeNewsUMD.

  • About National News Engagement Day National News Engagement Day was created to raise awareness about the importance of being informed, encourage people of all ages to engage with the news, educate the public about the principles of journalism, and ensure news engagement does not die out. The event is sponsored by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC). Paula Poindexter, the 2013-2014 president of AEJMC, made National News Engagement Day one of her most important presidential initiatives.
