OKLAHOMA PILOTSASSOCIATION

OKLAHOMA PILOTSASSOCIATION

March 2013

Fellow Aircraft Enthusiasts,

What you get out of something, depends on what you put in! How many times have we all heard this? This is very applicable to the Oklahoma Pilots Association. What you put into your association will directly effect what you will get out of your Association. We all participate at different levels in everything we do. That is partially what makes the world go around.

How is your “Attitude” about Recurrent Flight Training? What you get out of it directly depends on what you put into it. Unfortunately, when we discuss organizations and what you get out of them, your participation is purely optional; but when we discuss Recurrent Flight Training, getting a subpar result is not optional. This can or will directly affect your safety and the safety of your passengers. We are currently in a series of cold winter weather patterns, so most of us have not flown for a while, or have not flown as frequently as we would like to. So what does all of this mean? Spring is just around the corner, and the flying weather is almost here. Some of us will be ready and others will not. This is where recurrent training applies.

How do we accomplish this? First, we all need to fulfill the FAR Requirements that include, but are not limited to the Bi-Annual Flight Review, the IFR Proficiency Check, and even the Night and Day take off and landing requirements. But this is just the beginning. Safety does not equate to only meeting the FAR Requirements, Safety equates to Proficiency. How Proficient are you in the plane that you will be flying this spring? Not, How Proficient were you in the last airplane that you used to fly. Get started now! While the weather is not optimal, do some on line training. Do some reading. I think they still publish flight-training books.

How is your attitude toward aviation? Instead of just doing recurrent training, why not proceed forward with another rating in the progression sequence? Let's assume that you are a current and proficient Instrument Rated Pilot with a Private Pilots Certificate. Why not start this spring with a new Commercial Certificate? Or even look into a Flight Instructors Certificate? How many of us are comfortable in flying from the right seat? How about changing the way your recurrent flight-training program is scheduled? Look at taking a different Safety Pilot with you when flying approaches, to maintain instrument proficiency. Or make other changes to improve your proficiency. It is amazing what can happen when learning from a different perspective.

What you get out, depends on what you put in, OR If you keep doing the same thing, you will probably keep getting the same result. Spring is almost here! There will be a multitude of flying opportunities in the very near future. Get Current Now! Do not just meet the requirement, but really get proficient. It will not only give you a sense of self-satisfaction, but will also increase your safety. Who knows? Maybe you will even find a new or renewed passion within the Oklahoma Pilots Association!

Highlights from the February Dinner MeetingThanks to Mercedees Pales for taking notes for the article

and to Keith Leafdale for the pictures OPA welcomed Adam Smith for his first visit. He is from Dallas and works for Cessna as a Regional Sales Director. He sells everything from the 172 to the Caravan. He has been working for Cessna since 2005. Smith grew up in OKC. 99's reported that the Okie Derby will be the third weekend of August. OPA Fly Away schedule: Feb. 9th Sherman, TX (North TX. Regional); March 9th Enid, OK (Cafe Garcia); and April 13th Stillwater, OK (Eskimo Joe's). Special thanks were given to Keith, Danny, Roger, and Bill Pappadopoulis for all their work planning the Fly Aways.

Roger Walton announced that they are making a PDF file for the membership Directory. He said everyone is getting the emails so now we can email everyone the Directory.

General Stan Newman will be our speaker for the March meeting. We will get to hear the second part of his very interesting presentation.

Our speakers for the evening were from "Valair Aviation AGC Aerospace and Defense". Brian Reid is the Vice President Business Development and Emily

Olguin is the Director of Sales and Marketing. The title of their presentation was "Who's The Neighbor Next Door?" They started the presentation with "WHO WE ARE NOW". Highlights from the February Dinner Meeting Continued

Then the speakers moved on to "OUR HISTORY". Valair possesses a rich history and has been a significant contributor to the aviation infrastructure of the Central United States. Its origins are traced to the Customer Delivery and Service Center for Twin Commander. They were formerly the ServiCenter, Inc. Their maintenance services were launched in 1948 as the service division for Aero Commander. New production piston, turbine, and jet powered aircraft were delivered from our facilities at KPWA. Valair transitioned from a factory delivery and maintenance center in the 1980's to become one of the Central United States' premier full service MRO centers. They were acquired by Acorn Growth Companies in 2008. They continued with “VALAIR MRO- WHAT WE PROVIDE”. They are known by their clients for providing visionary MRO solutions including: Personalized service providing focused solutions with an emphasis on quality, price, and turn-time.; Aging aircraft support and upgrades; Sophisticated avionics upgrades, repair, modification, and support; Major and minor structural repairs and modifications; Power plant repair (project management); Complete aircraft strip and paint; Customized interiors; Spares and 24 hour AOG support ; and Superior program management of client expectations. "VALAIR UPCOMING EVENTS" include: Pilots Group February 20th; Garmin Avionics Seminar March 19th; Collings Foundation; B-17, P-51 and B-24 on display April 5-7th; and Great Plains Aviation Expo with April dates to be determined.

OPA February Fly Away - Changed to the Persimmon Hill Cafe Drive In

Thanks once again to Keith Leafdale for the photographs and information

The weather caused another cancelled flight and we went to the alternate; the Persimmon Hill Cafe at the Cowboy Hall of Fame and Western Heritage Museum. It was so overcast that the tops of the iron sticks making up the “antenna farm” were hidden in the overcast. The picture makes it plain to see why we didn't “Fly Away”. It also looks like the cowboy statue is looking for the tower tops; or maybe just for a break in the overcast.

We had 18 people at the Drive-In Fly Away, including one guest. They include: Hal & Alma Harris, Christine & Grace Manglicmot, Beau Harris, Ashley Moseley, Gerald & Barb Luton, Danny & Vi Davis, Bill & Carolyn Hines, Roger & Jan Walton, Al Liebler, Keith & Delinda Leafdale, and Don Miller.

Later in the afternoon, Delinda and Keith went down to the OKC Art Museum, and on

the way she caught the shot below of the downtown skyline in the overcast. Guess the Cowboy was still looking!
