Dear Chamber Members,

We are now in the fourth quarter of 2013! If you planned and set goals this year, you should have achieved ¾ of them (or better) to stay on track. The Chamber’s strategic planning process—“Project 2015”—which began over 3 years ago, has met many of its goals or is very close to meeting them. Membership and retention have exceeded projections, leadership and succession planning have been completed, communications strategy and IT infrastructure are nearing completion and government relations/business climate work is ongoing. As we move toward the end of the year, it’s important to readdress the goals and vision we have set. This will take place as part of our Board Retreat in November.

2013 has been a very active year for the Chamber. To date we’ve had nine Get Moving Middleton breakfasts, record setting Annual Celebration and Golf Outings, one Fortune 500 speaker in David Lumley from Spectrum Brands, nine Business Social Hours, eight Economic Development meetings, six Ask the Expert sessions, numerous committee meetings and countless Ribbon Cuttings and Open Houses. The Annual Sports Night at Keva in May set records and we surpassed our volunteer commitments to the Good Neighbor Festival.

Get Moving Middleton continues to serve as one of our Chamber’s most popular monthly events, with timely updates on city, community and business issues. There will be a special member meeting on October 3 to vote on the slate of candidates for the 2014 Board of Directors - please try to attend this GMM to take part in the voting.

We have a new GMM emcee in Nolan Brown! I would like to thank Bob Vanden Burgt for the great job he did over the last 2+ years as the emcee at GMM and welcome Nolan to his new role.

Please take advantage of all your Chamber membership has to offer in networking and educational opportunities. The next Business Social Hour is October 10 at Nonn’s Design Showplace. Ask the Expert has two sessions yet this fall including LinkedIn and Employee Engagement. Monthly Economic Development briefings are set for October 16 and November 20.

The Wisconsin DOT held a public information meeting at City Hall on September 23 to accept input on long-term solutions to congestion and crash rates on the Beltline. The information presented was very interesting and eye-opening. As Middleton grows, the Beltline and other traffic corridors will have a significant effect on businesses’ ability to transport goods and people efficiently. It’s also a major quality of life issue. The study includes bicycle and pedestrian concerns, as well as rapid transit. Future public input meetings will take place late 2013 and early 2014. What has your experience been with the Middleton Chamber? It’s fun! I really like the social events. It’s a 45 minute drive from my house so I don’t make many of the Get Moving Middleton meetings in the morning, but plan to attend more

Where do you think you will be in 20 years? I will be 70 so I hope I am retired! Eventually sell the company or have someone take it over and move to Sante Fe, NM. It was one of the communities I fell in love with during my travels. Or else become a professional gambler and travel the country!

What are the biggest challenges you have faced professionally? When the recession hit us five years ago, it was very difficult having so many clients declare bankruptcy and not pay their bills. We had to lay off employees. For two years we barely got by, but survived. I was close to throwing in the towel in 2009. Now business is coming back with a vengeance and we are crazy busy with Department of Transportation and City of Madison projects.

Where did you grow up? What was your first job? What did your parents want you to be? Madison born and bred. First woman on the Maple Bluff Country Club grounds crew. Bartended at my parent’s bar, The Hope Tavern, which is now Country Corners. My dad was a firefighter/paramedic and wanted me to join the Fire Department we could be the first father/daughter team. I decided I did not want to break into an all male industry. Ended up [in a career] where all I work with is men. After the first two years of having to prove myself, it has worked out well.

What did you want to be when you were growing up? A teacher or professional athlete, like a skier or tennis player. My parents said they would pay for college if I picked a different major. Not paying for college was a powerful motivation to pick another career path.

What activities do you do for fun? Fishing up north near Eagle River, salmon fishing near Bayfield in October, visiting the Union and going to Badger football games. Seeing the band V05 around Madison. I also have a 50’ x 50’ garden, so I spend a lot of time gardening and

How did you become interested in civil engineering and land surveying? I got into civil engineering because of an aptitude test in high school that said I should go into chemical engineering. The chemical engineering curriculum looked too hard so I went the easy route and opted for civil engineering. I fell in love with my first land surveying class and decided that is what I wanted to do. I graduated from the UW-Madison Civil Engineering program with the Land Survey option.

What significant changes have you seen in your industry since you started? COMPUTERS! Started my first job using only an HP Calculator and ink pens, then around 1987 we used a computer and Autocad 2.6. Subdivision plats that would take a month or more to prepare, now they can be done in a week or two! Much easier to make changes with computers; Ink on Mylar does not erase well!

Fairway to Present Wisconsin Native and Military Veteran with Mortgage-Free Home. Fairway Independent Mortgage Corporation has joined forces with the Boot Campaign and the Military Warriors Support Foundation—non-profit organizations supporting returning American military troops—to sponsor a “mortgage-free” home to a wounded military veteran. U.S. Army Sargent Branley, a Superior Wisconsin native, was presented with the mortgage-free home at a Fairway “Boot Camp” event in early August.

Starion Financial Shows Support for Troops. Starion Financial employees donated more than $1,000 worth of food and money to purchase care packages to send to deployed soldiers. The packages were sent to five different deployed troops, including those of Starion employees’ family members.

Sherman Attends LPL Financial National Conference. Rebekah Sherman from MHK Retirement Partners recently attended focus13, a leading financial services industry conference hosted by LPL Financial, the nation’s number one independent broker-dealer. Held in San Diego, focus13 was one of the industry’s premier sales and education events for financial professionals. More than 5,700 total attendees from around the country assembled to learn new strategies and skills, expand knowledge in numerous product areas, and network with peers and industry experts.

Wisconsin’s Largest Body Shop Makes Damaged Cars New Again. With the expansion of Ball Body Shop, from 20,000 to 28,000 sq. ft., the shop has become the largest full retail body shop in the state. But the company didn’t just increase the number of service bays or apply a fresh coat of paint, it also added high tech equipment to turn it into a state-of-the-art facility. From an alignment rack that can lift any vehicle, to a full service glass company (NOVUS Glass Madison), Ball Body Shop remanufactures vehicles back to pre-accident condition. Summit Credit Union Supports National Guard and Reserve. Fred McCormick, of the Wisconsin Committee for Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) announced that Kim Sponem, CEO/President, Summit Credit Union, signed a Statement of Support for the Guard and Reserve. The signing ceremony occurred at the Summit offices in Madison. Inaugural Boot Camp for Books a Huge Success. Horizon Health and Fitness in collaboration with REACH a Child hosted a Boot Camp on August 1. 26 people showed up to participate and another 10 were there for support. The event raised 404 books and $345 for REACH a Child. Special thanks go to American Girl for donating 100 books toward the event! Organizers are looking forward to doing another boot camp this winter.

Hope & A Future III, Inc. Breaks Ground. Hope & A Future broke ground at 3440 S. High Point Road. This will complete phase 1 of a four phase Therapeutic Interactive Intergenerational Neighborhood (TIIN) development. Hope & A Future III, inc. is a 501c3 charitable non-profit organization and an expanded vision of intergenerational living. They are taking a fresh look at the needs and strengths of the two fastest growing segments of our population—seniors and young families at risk—by developing staffed neighborhood settings that use the resource potential of motivated individuals from both groups to be helpful while being helped. The current ground breaking is for an accessible wing on the Adult Family Home. Kendall Kolb, of Design Structures, is the project manager and is screening and coordinating volunteers to help build $32,000. in sweat equity for the project. Jordan and Fuszard Form the Merrill Lynch Jordan/Fuszard Group. Merrill Lynch announced that Financial Advisors Jonathon T. Jordan and Curtis J. Fuszard have established the Jordan/Fuszard Group in the Merrill Lynch Madison office. Jordan has been in the financial services industry since 2008 and joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2011. Fuszard entered the industry in 1980 and spent many years building and managing investment programs. He joined Merrill Lynch Wealth Management in 2012.

Wegner CPAs Staff Become Hunger Heroes for a Day. The United Way of Dane County held their annual Days of Caring on Tuesday, August 20. A team of 15 volunteers from Wegner CPAs spent half the day at the Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. Adorned with aprons, gloves, and hairnets, the team was tasked with sorting through bulk donations of frozen meat and miscellaneous products. Donated items were checked for freshness and then sorted into appropriate categories. Over 7,000 pounds of meat were sorted in one afternoon.

NARI Reports Increase in Residential Remodeling, Construction Spending. In t July, over $8.8 million dollars were spent on construction and remodeling to single family residences in the city of Madison. This number comes from The City’s Department of Planning & Community & Economic Development permit summary reports. These reports are released by the city, on a monthly basis and detail the construction and remodeling permits that were sought by area property owners. The amount of money spent during July 2013, on an average single family residential construction or remodeling project, is 6.6% higher than it was in July of last year.

Finalists Announced for the 2013 National Gold Medal Awards. The American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration (AAPRA), in partnership with the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), is pleased to announce the Finalists for the 2013 National Gold Medal Awards for Excellence in Park and Recreation Management. Middleton Public Lands, Recreation & Forestry is a finalist in the Class V division (population less than 25,000).

Madison NO FEAR Dentistry wins Star of Madison: Best Dental Facility AND ‘Top Dentist’. Madison NO FEAR Dentistry is excited to announce that Dr. Ducommun has been awarded Top Dentist 2013 by Madison Magazine as voted upon by his peers.
