NEWS LITERACY PSA Project Instructors: Kris Doran & Jesse Sutherland Saturday, November 16, 2013

description

This was a second part of a news literacy program funded through a McCormick foundation grant. The project bring two teams (one from Chicago, one from DC) of four students each to the Boston convention. Led by myself and Multimedia Instructor, Kris Doran, the teams will each create a 2-minute public service announcement that will be viewed at the end of each convention. The team PSA will address the question: “How does media affect the way teenagers view themselves and the world?”

WHAT DO YOU THINK?Before we consider making our PSA, we should consider the underlying message we’re sending from your perspective.

Are traditional conventions adapting to

modern methods?

Why or why not?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Is there now a push to break newsbefore others and is that

changing the balance betweenpublishing what people want to

Should journalists be more responsible to make sure

we are accurately informed, or should we be better

informed citizens?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

How should journalists fact check? How should informed citizens fact check? How many times can a news outlet get it wrong before they loose your trust?

Is News Literacy different for teens than it is for adults?

Why or why not?

What if roles were reversed and teens were reporting news from their perspective for the adults to view?

How do we recognize bias in news reporting?

WHAT DO YOU THINK?

TYPES OF BIASBias by omission: leaving out facts that you don’t “like” or you don’t “think are true.” Or, leaving out an important perspective.

Bias by selection of sources: including sources that only support one view. Including sources that are trying to further their own agenda.

Bias by word choice: using loaded words or labels that convey certain meanings instead of more neutral terms (“freedom fighter v. terrorist”)

Bias by story selection: choosing stories that further a cause, or ignoring stories that you don’t like or that might cause trouble for friends.

PSA PROJECT #nhsjc

TIPS & TRICKSBe Polite

If someone does not want to be interviewed, move on.There are lots of “fish” in the sea that will be willing to be interviewed.

Pay Attention! If an interviewee answers your question before you asked it, try not to ask after they just gave the answer. If students are consistently giving great responses about one topic, try thinking about the other goals of your PSA

Coach them2-minutes for the entire PSA, not for one interviewExplain before the interview that you are looking for short statements

B-RollIf you pay attention to what your interviewees are saying, they are telling you what you need to gather B-Roll of. Put someone in charge of keeping a “wish-list” of B-Roll for your team.
