UNIVERSITY HOLIDAYS!
On Thursday, June 2, our school captains Shaylee Poole and Jesse Kirkman travelled to Sydney with Deputy Principal, Helen Young, and school captains from six other local schools to visit Parliament House. The students enjoyed a tour and sat-in on both assemblies which gave them an insight into the processes that take place in our parliamentary system. Following lunch the group walked to Government House and had a tour of this wonderful building followed by a question and answer session with the Governor Sir David Hurley. Afternoon tea was then held in the gardens with an opportunity to speak with the Governor and his wife. A very memorable day for these students.

ReachOut’s top tips for beating stress
Everyone experiences stress at some point, but there are heaps of simple ways to minimise its impact on your life. Right now is a great time of the year to work on stress management skills and be ready for when the stress-deluge comes (exams).
Stress can be mild or intense, and it can make people feel frustrated, anxious and even hostile. Ever been grumpy because of stress? There you go. Stress can get in the way of sleep, cause headaches and change your appetite. It can also reduce your ability to concentrate and make it harder to remember course content.
ReachOut has lots of fact sheets and practical tools for beating stress. Here are a few:
All work and no play? Bad idea. Make time every week to completely forget about study and do something you enjoy, like playing sport, hanging out with friends or watching TV. Taking regular breaks and ‘me-time’ to clear your head will also help you study more productively: au.reachout.com/taking-regular-me-time
Feel like you’re not achieving what you’re capable of? Sit down and set goals at the beginning of each term. Define your goal, set sub-goals and make a plan of action. Then you’ll know what you’re aiming for and it’ll be easier to stay focused: au.reachout.com/how-to-set-goals
When you’re feeling stressed, it helps to have a proven strategy lined up to help you deal with it. It could be something like reducing the number of commitments you have, telling a close friend you’re stressed and talking through it, or even using positive self-talk strategies: au.reachout.com/building-better-coping-skills
Sometimes it might feel like stress is unbeatable, but it’s definitely manageable. For more info on keeping it in control, check out these fact sheets on ReachOut.com:

Principal’s ColumnAs always, it has been a busy fortnight at Toormina High School as our students completed their mid-year examinations, and teachers and students participated in the athletics carnival, Relay For Life and the Year 10 Senior Subject Selection Night. I’d like to acknowledge the hard work of the PE Department and Relieving Head Teacher Mr Bilsborough for their efforts in organising another outstanding athletics carnival. The weather was ideal and it was wonderful to see so many students, staff and parents enjoying the atmosphere. It is also important that I acknowledge the tireless efforts of Mrs Cheers and Mr Gale for their work with the Relay For Life team, and of course all of the students and staff who supported this worthy cause. As a general reminder, and in line with Department of Education policy, our school now requires that parents who transport students, other than their own child, as part of a school excursion must have completed a Working with Children Check. This can be applied for online through the Office of the Children’s Guardian on www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au . By specifying that your role is voluntary the check should be completed free of charge. Your assistance in completing this check and forwarding a copy of the paperwork to the school would be much appreciated. Dr Joanne Bellette
During May the THS Support Unit has had 4 students completing the ETC Certificate III in Individual Support gaining valuable work experience.Shane Bennett in the top photo probably had work experience he wasn’t expecting as he assisted in the outdoor learning program!Simone Earle and Daryl Christenson are pictured with a work experience team of THS student gardeners at Marion Grove and Tracy Brandon is in the classroom in the photo on left. All agreed is was a valuable opportunity to put their theory into practice and wanted to thanks THS and the Support Unit.
