PRIME Minister David Cameron will make his frst ofcial visit to the Irish Republic next week – coinciding with the Queen’s historic state visit. The Conservative leader will meet taoiseach Enda Kenny at Dublin’s Government Buildings on Wednesday. The trip coincides with the Queen’s visit – the frst by a reigning British monarch to the Republic. Mr Kenny said: “I am very happy to have had the support o our riend Mr Cameron, and indeed his government, which  was one o the frst to oer bilateral loan arrangements or Ireland.” See page 14 Cameron to visit Republic NEWS Letter columnist John Connery has been highly commended in a prestigious awards ceremony or his writings on living with cancer. The 54-year-old, rom Scarva in Co Armagh, won recognition or his popular  weekly column, Living with the Big C, at the Regional Press Awards in London yesterday. John approached the News Letter in February 2010 with the idea o writing a column to “inspire and comort other readers who may be on the same journey and who eel scared and helpless”. See page 5 Cancer writer commended  Alliance eclipse UUP in executive THE Ulster Unionists will have ewer seats in the executive than the  Alliance Party ater David McClarty last night declined oers to re-join the party which deselected him. The East Londonderry MLA — re- elected with an increased mandate ater the local UUP constituency association chairman described him as a “spent orce” — last night delivered a resh blow to Tom Elliott’s leadership. The independent MLA said that he had received “lots o phone calls; phone calls that were not orthcoming prior to my election on Thursday”. Mr McClarty’s decision ollowed a day o speculation about Mr Elliott’s position and the news that an extraordinary UUP executive meeting will be held in Dungannon on Saturday. There has been  widespread controversy ater Mr Elliott responded to republican hecklers at the assembly election count at the weekend by calling them “the scum o Sinn Fein”. Last night Mr Elliott oered a qualifed apology or his remarks, but  was insistent he was not withdrawing them, just oering clarifcation. “I the broad nationalist community  was oended by my comments I apologise to them,” he said. “I was not reerring to them, only to those  who have perpetrated violence.
