The close association with CEF generated a request for purpose made installation training boards for their apprentice electricians. Here the training officers from the regional facilities came to Redditch to check out the special boards made by RPP and which featured many IMD products.

Today the increased safety and protection of the RCD and MCB have combined to produce the RCBO which has reduced in size to the current compact version.

Proteus Switchgear celebrates its 30th year and notes what a change and development there has been over the years. This is notably identified when you consider domestic circuit protection devices. Back in the 1980’s rewireable fuses using fuse wire were commonplace with many units still in installations to this day. The first miniature circuit breakers then appeared initially with brass blades on them to act as a direct replacement to the push-in rewirables.

The European din rail then swept across the channel and the look and construction of consumer units fundamentally changed. Carriers that clipped onto the din rail with a linking bus bar. Carriers with HRC fuses were used for a while but the easy of resetting of the MCB device was always going to take over even though the early models had exposed terminals and other design flaws that were developed out during the nineties and the noughties.

East Dunbartonshire Council, in partnership with East Dunbartonshire Leisure and Culture (EDLC) Trust, are fulfilling a long standing ambition to provide a community sports hub at Huntershill, Bishopbriggs. Plans include: a full-size, all-weather sports pitch with floodlighting and fencing; sports pavilion with 10 changing rooms, recreation hall and more; three floodlit, all-weather tennis courts; and a six-lane athletics track. The total cost of the project is now estimated at £7.8million. Main electrical contractors Moffat Electrical Services Ltd proposed Proteus Industrial Switchgear to electrical consultants Atkins Global UK for the incoming mains supply. The installation consisted of various wall mounting IP3X distribution boards, split load boards and MCCB panel boards, fully fitted with devices, surge protection and metering. The direct dialogue with the installation contractors established the exact requirements and meant that each board was purpose-made to their exact specifications. The boards then arrived on site fully assembled saving valuable time to the installing engineers.

Alan Hay, Estimating Director of the Moffat Group said “We have used Proteus over many years and do so whenever we can. Having the units pre-built at the factory was a great time saver and allowed us to complete all the quicker”.

PROTEUS POWERING UP THE REFURBISHED SOUTH PARADE PIER

Originally built in 1879, over the years the South Parade pier in Southsea has suffered many misfortunes including two significant fires, various closures and many changes of ownership. Currently the new ownership have been determined to restore the seaside attraction to its former glory, including a 275 seater restaurant, an ice cream parlour and gourmet sandwich bar. Following a visit to the Proteus Switchgear factory in Telford, electrical installation engineers, Vintas Ltd of Portsmouth were able to specify exactly what they needed: a Pro800 MCCB panel board, with front access cabling, built to BSEN61439-2, IP3X, Form 3b type 2 group mounted segregation.

A 630A S.S.E metering CT chamber connected to a 630A MCCB main incomer was agreed which fed a 6 and 12 way TP busbar to give 18 way triple pole ways up to 250A. Four of the MCCB’s fitted were provided with MID approved kWh meters. A Type 2 surge arrestor was fitted to give protection against mains surges.

The new FastConnect basket tray recently launched by Tamlex of Telford has a unique design that enables quick and easy installation and so saving precious time on site against traditional products. The patented coupler does not require screws, tools or any other fastener as it simply clips into position and can be easily removed and repositioned if necessary.

Having been presented to Stuart Newnes, Director of Integrated Electrical Projects of Ashton-Under-Lyme it was chosen for use in a refurbishment of a luxury car dealership in Cardiff.

“I found the FastConnect couplers really made a difference to the install time,” said Craig Baker, “because of how easy they are to clip in. The basket I have used on previous jobs has a thread through clip on each side and can cause problems if you need to remove them. FastConnect has the added benefit that you don’t have to order the clips separately, which saves money! I would happily use and recommend this system on future projects due to the ease of installation.”

WESTPOINTThe office-to-residential trend occurring at Old Trafford, Manchester continues with Marcol’s 100,000 sq ft Westpoint development. Only two miles from the city centre Westpoint is a local landmark and has its own multi-storey car park.

As befitting an out-of-town office-to-resi installation, electrical contractors Central Electrical NW Ltd chose the new M2 decorative range for the wiring accessories of the new apartments. From the five decorative metal plate finishes available the brushed stainless steel was selected with matching switches. M2 as part of the Installation Materials Division were also able to supply not only the main incoming distribution boards by Proteus Industrial Switchgear but all the containment by Tamlex Steel Cable Management based in Telford.

“Having direct contact with the manufacturers from IMD,” said Nathan Quinlan, director of Central Electrical, “was a great help in obtaining the correct materials and coordinating deliveries”.


Introducing the “little guy carrying a heavy load”, M2 will be introducing a compact 45 amp RCBO.
