Board Meeting The Chandler Horizon Rotary Club board held its regular monthly meeting July 16. The Club board was joined by the Foundation board to kick off the new year. Club Treasurer Larry Gardner reported our cash balance at the end of the 2018-19 Rotary year was about the same as the previous two years. That will change somewhat when monies earned through fines, Exempt badge and the 50-50 drawing will be turned over to the CHRC Foundation, effective with the start of this Rotary year. The club will investigate ways members may be able to pay their quarterly dues through a pay- ment program. Larry and Foundation Treasurer Jim Hoenig will get together to get the Foundation financial reports set up on Quick Books. There was discussion about greater education of club members in general regarding our own club foundation as well as The Rotary Foundation. The board learned Doug Hawkins has been removed from club membership effective June 30, 2019, due to apparent lack of interest. President Greg went over a list of committees and their chairs. He hopes to get all the committees set up and running soon. There was discussion about greater participa- tion by club members in club activities. More advance and detailed information would help. We will attempt to set up a Calendar of Events in the News Horizons newsletter. Club Assembly New President Greg Thornton conducted a Club Assembly. He gave a Power Point presenta- tion featuring lists of board members, club com- mittees and a calendar of upcoming club activities during his year. Club committees including sub-committees are: Club Administration — Music, Sunshine, Programs, Sergeant-at-Arms. Membership — Attendance, Socials. Public Relations – Publicity, Bulletin, His- torian. Service Projects – Dictionary Project, Hole- in-One Contest. Foundation – Permanent Fund, Grants. New Generations – Scholarships/Awards/ Vocational, Interact/Rotaract. Additions may be made to the subcommittee list as needed. Some of the committees already have a chair person, as do some of the subcommittees. But there are many holes that need to be filled. Contact President Greg to let him know on which committee(s) you will be willing to serve. The only calendar item for July was the For Our City Operation Back to School Back Pack Drive that was held last Saturday. The main event so far for August is the installa- tion of a Peace Pole at Basha High School, a joint project with the Basha High Interact Club. The Thought for the Day Sixty might be the new forty, but 9 p.m. is definitely the new midnight.

Back Pack DriveTerry Locke (left to right in top

photo), Azita Dehkordi and Soo-San Stevens-Clarke were joined by Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke at the seventh annual For Our City Operation Back to School Back Pack Drive at Chandler High School last Saturday.

Overall, 200 volunteers from 75 organizations (of which 28 were represented Saturday) served nearly 3,000 students at the event.

date for that is set for August 14. We will hold our regular weekly meeting at Basha High on that date.

We are going to attempt to set up a calendar that will run periodically in News Horizons. It is hoped more members will plan to work on the projects that will be approved by the board. If not enough members sign up, the project will be cancelled.

There was discussion about the Cops ‘N’ Kids project that was started by PDG Roger Bonngard, in which used books are collected and then donated to children by policemen. It is hoped that project can be revived.

There also was discussion about the need for more members so CHRC can be even more effective in the community. Don’t hesitate to bring a friend or business associate to a meeting so they can learn more about what we do.

Meeting attendance traditionally is low during the summer months, but the last few weeks have been ridiculous. Please make a better effort to attend each week.
