4-H is a community of young people across America who are learning citizenship, leadership and life skills.
May 2013
Congratulations to the Northwest
Region Camp Counselors who
were selected for the 2012
camping sessions.
Counselors were selected
following a format implemented in
2011. The process included a
written application, county youth
staff recommendations, service
learning project participation, and
observation by NW region 4-H
youth staff. This method of
selection resulted in a fair and
complete process.
Counselors selected for the 2013
camping sessions include Megan
Ellis and Aubrey Nelson, Daviess
County; Rebecca Prest, Harrison
County; and Zackary DeJoode,
Blayre Messner and Kelly Paul,
Gentry County. These six youth
were selected from 34 youth who
applied to be counselors at the
“The Great Outdoors” summer
camps to be held at Crowder State
Park, Trenton. The camp will be
focused on the camp setting,
wildlife, enjoying the world
around us.
As a part of this year’s selection
days, the counselor candidates
cleared hiking paths, painted signs
at Crowder State Park, designed
the camp t-shirt, and planned the
evening campfire programs held
during camp. The youth refined
their team building abilities in an
effort to be selected.
Congratulations to our counselors
who will be working with campers
June 3-6 & June 10-13.

sector of our economy and every
community in our great state, and it
is important to attract the next
generation of agricultural leaders.
There is a bright future for young

their interests and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity,
information or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing
experiences that introduce 5- to 7-year-olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing.

MARBLING
What you need:
Handmade paper/ Construction Paper
Oil paints A flat tray with raised edges
What you do:
Fill the tray with water and add a few drops of oil paint. If you want a multi-color effect add drops of different colors. Take a sheet of handmade paper and dip it into the water completely. Take it out immediately and hand it on a clothes line until completely dry.
You will see a marble-like print on the paper, in all the brilliant colors that you put into the water. Try different combinations of colors.
Handmade paper is preferred to other types of paper because it absorbs the color well. However, you can try it out on different papers to see what happens.

What you need:
5 clear jars powder/tempra paint
Spoon Sugar
5 gummed labels salt
cold water sand

Write the names of the substances you are going to add to the water on the labels. Stick a label on to each container. Put 2 cups full of cold water in each container. In each case, the children should guess what they think will happen first, then do the experiment.
Put 2 spoonful's of sugar in the container. Repeat with other items.
Guess: what will happen to the sugar if you leave it?
Guess: what will happen to the sugar if you stir it?
What has happened to the sugar? Give the sugar and water a good stir. Which disappeared in the water? The substances that disappeared in the water, where are they now?
